my parents both grew up in & around Mt. Airy (aka Mayberry) which is towards the northwest part of the state near the border to VA, so basically a small town in North Carolina

my mother, a public school teacher who traditionally leans a little left but often votes split ticket, will be voting for Obama

my dad, who has served in the army & run his own business (Goad's Auto Sales) who leans a little right but who has been politically apathetic for some years now & i'm a little surprised is voting at all, will be voting for Obama

and for all my sound & fury on tdub in support of my candidates of choice, they came to their decisions independently of what I had to say.

my family is conservative, but there are some holdovers from the days when everybody voted Democrat, but i don't think any of my relatives are going to vote for Obama. they have more sense than to do that.

I do not understand why people still give the reason that they are voting for McCain because "Obama will raise their taxes", I didn't realize that so many middle class people made over $250k.

I can see the problematic aspects of Obama's tax plan but most people who are against Obama most likely havent read about Obama's tax plan and know only what McCain says.

My whole family on both sides is Democrat, except 1 uncle on my mom's side.


It was hilarious listening to my dad during the debate. McCain would be talking about something not at all related to the question asked and my dad would be like "What in the hell is that old bastard talking about!?! "

EDIT: I really doubt Obama is going to cut taxes for 95% because....
1) 95% of America doesnt even pay taxes
2) ~trillion in new spending, we just dropped 700b, plus tax cuts on average (less revenue overall even w/tax increases for the wealthy), aaaand hes going to run a surplus, how?
3) Democrats always run on the platform of cutting taxes and fail to do it...this election is the perfect opportunity to do that because Obama can say 'we cant afford it'
4) The increase in the cap gains tax will be spread throughout employment, prices and shareholders.
5) Even if Im not making 250 (or anywhere near it), I believe its the principal of the thing that you dont tax those for succeeding. Thats sheer opinion and is completely relative, so dont bother arguing with me. Just my views.

Mom and Dad are both voting for McCain because of taxes. They dont want to get rail'd and it would delay their retirement.

Brother in law is voting for ralph nadar....

I debating whether I want to show support and vote Barr or vote McCain since it seems more relevant (Im doing an absentee from OH). Im all for libertarians but Id much rather have McCain than Obama.

I think the problem is that people assume when people make shit loads of money they "succeeded".

NYC is crawling with little douche hedge funders making 300k-500k right out of college. They didn't succeed at anything other than moving around richer peoples money and then fucking up the economy.

Mom has spent her whole life in NC and became Republican largely because of her opposition to abortion and mandatory bussing. I leave it to your imagination.

My dad spent about half his life in Illinois and Milwaukee and half here in NC. He hasn't specifically said anything one way or the other, but based on his prior voting history and general ideology, I would be willing to bet my paltry savings that he will be voting for Obama.

Please forgive me if this inquiry seems rude but why is abortion such a big deal for your father? I am having visions of the anti-choice ("pro-life" to some of you) booth at the State Fair and it seems to always be run by older white guys. My girlfriend and I have always found this both puzzling and disturbing.
