how does someone in their twenties have such a profound understanding on what it was like to tour with Phish in the early 90's?

As far as the trading of tapes electronically - that was a carryover from people who did the same thing for the Dead. Phish was by no means one of the first bands to make active use of the internet; they merely used a template that had already been established by Deadheads.

Phish was like an episode of my life. I neither regret it nor reminisce about it. I do think Phish is talented, there's no mistaking that. What I've come to dislike is their style, and yes, their songwriting ability is far inferior to a lot of good acts out there (even though some of their songs are very well-written), but it really doesn't matter with the amount of improvisation and talented playing ability that can carry them through concerts and so forth whilst providing the audience with the feeling that the money was well spent.

The thing I dislike most about their style in particular is how "soft" their guitars sound and how hokey a lot of their material is. Anyway, I was by far a bigger Grateful Dead fan (and still somewhat am) than I was a Phish fan.

But even if I was still a Phish fan, I still feel there should be a limit on how long you carry your acts out; for example, I LOVE the Stones - they're probably my favorite band. But I wouldn't go to one of their shows if you paid me. Their music sucks now, they're sellouts, etc. It's the same with the Dead. The 80s and beyond were the worst times for the Dead, and if I were a fan of theirs while Garcia were still alive, I wouldn't have gone to see one of their shows; simply because of how their guitars have "matured" over the decades...

^ It's not like every band has overstayed their welcome though. REM has been around for 28 years and, personally, I think their new album is some of their strongest material. Same with U2. They have been around for 30 years and are just as vital and important as ever. There are many other examples and these are just 2 that I pulled off the top of my head.

That being said, who cares if they are no longer vital? I just went to see Jimmy Buffett last night and he hasn't done anything significant in 20+ years. But the show was awesome. Everyone had fun and everyone went home happy. I can't really come up with a reason where something like that is a bad thing. If you like the music then you like the music.

gotta disagree with you on that one. seeing the rolling stones in concert is like seeing the sistine chapel, or michelangelo's david . you know theyre old as hell and were alot more pristine in their prime and some of the work has faded, but the brilliance and superiority they carry is still there. if you ever get the chance to see them, you realize you may never be able to see it in person again (maybe why over 1 million people gathered in rio de jeneiro for a concert)

ive been listening to the stones my whole life and never saw them in person, but when i saw them in durham, it became surreal. it takes so long for it to actually sit in that Mick jagger and keith richards are right in front of you playing the music that has been cherished across the globe for almost a half a century. these guys are legends, and 40 years into their career, there is no signs of letting up. for almost three hours, they played everything you'd expect to hear, and each one is a classic in a league of its own. no other band besides, the beatles, can do that.

that concert left me speechless, i was expecting to see old men barely able to finish a show, and was shocked. they have remained fully entact for almost half a century. the same band at monterey pop was there in durham. they play every concert like it could be their last, because well, it could be.

you see pictures of the sistine chapel and michelangelo youre whole life, you listen to the stones on the radio all of your life ... and if you see them in person, you respect their work so much more and realize just how special they are.

Phish are incredible improvisers. They've panned off as they've gotten older, but some of their material from '94-95 is some of the best improvisation I've ever heard from any rock band.

And I actually agree with most of what Scrumples is saying.

all debate in this thread could be solved by listening to 12/11/97

Set I: Punch You in the Eye, Down With Disease> Maze, Dirt, Limb By Limb, Loving Cup, Rocky Top
Set II: Drowned> Roses are Free> Big Black Furry Creature from Mars, Ghost> Down With Disease, Johnny B Goode
Encore: Waste

if you can't get in to that, lord help you.

you get some of Phish's best

- elaborate trippy jamming (complete with Trey's 'siren' loop) on "Ghost,"
- epic rock improvisation on Drowned,
- guitar solo pwnage on DWD, Maze, and Johnny B Goode
- concert singalong glee on "Punch You in the Eye" and "Roses are Free,"
- quality songwriting in "Limb by Limb" and "Waste"
- the Phish-is-notable-for-silliness trampoline type shit with BBFCM

nothing to hate, everything to love about that band

Lots of shows:

"Just a reminder, for those of you who don't already have this bookmarked, that I have created an online spreadsheet to host all the mediafire links that BizarroJerry and I have uploaded over the last 4-5 months. The spreadsheet is being updated on a daily basis, but here is what you will find on there currently:

83-87 - 36 shows
1988 - 36 shows
1989 - 52 shows
1990 - 35 shows
----------------
1996 - 4 shows
1997 - 71 shows
1998 - 70 shows (every show)
1999 - 63 shows (every show)
2000 - 52 shows (every show)

Like I said, it is updated daily...BizarroJerry is going forwards through his collection (currently in the middle of 1990) and I am going backwards through mine (about to start 1996 after filling in some holes in 1997)."

Yeah, I knew about that one, but they're all really shitty quality audience dubs @64kbps. I didn't realize Jerry's wife or whomever basically banned people from sharing those good quality soundboard recordings online.

It sucks too, because there's a lot of shows from circa 1970 I'd love to have if the quality was right...

Fuck it. If anybody has any Dead shows from 69-71 that HAVE NOT been released on Dick's Picks or some other commercial disc AND are soundboard recordings, please PM me. I'd be very interested in getting those. I'm pretty pissed at myself for missing the damned boat when all these things were available for free.

PS - it's pretty funny how some of you were complaining about the Dead thing and now I'm posting this in ur thread. LOL.

Well, it's a bunch of teenie boppers and so forth screaming, ruining the sound and overall it's just stupid to even record such an event.

You'd get the same results trying to record the Beatles live in the middle 60s.

i do, however think that the recently ep is a fine piece of work

letter from page

http://phish.com/news/index.php?year=2008#story396

Quote :
"A LETTER FROM PAGE 06.26.08
Given the volume of speculation and rumors that have bubbled up recently, I have been asked to make a statement…Here goes.

For me, the last four years have been great. I’ve spent quality time with my family and have watched my daughter grow. I took great pleasure and pride in writing and recording an album. I’m living a healthy lifestyle. I travel as little as possible and I sleep in my own bed. It took a couple of years after the break up to begin talking to my old band mates, but once the conversations began to flow it wasn’t long before the friendships were rekindled. And I can honestly say that I’m closer with all of them now then I’ve ever been in our 20-year relationship.

Recently the conversations have turned toward the possibility of spending some time together. Currently many of us have plans and projects already in the works, most notably Mike, who made a great album and is about to hit the road in support of it. Given that I might not even see some of the guys for the next six months, I would say that the announcement of a reunion is premature. However, later this year we hope to spend some time together and take a look at what possible futures we might enjoy. In fact the only real decision that has been made is that when we do get together, it will only be the four of us, hopefully with no distractions. I am really looking forward to that.

I want to say just a few more things. The prospect of Phish reuniting is something I consider very seriously, and I think about it a lot. And lastly, as always, there is plenty of misinformation floating around. Try not to focus too much on secondhand sources and random gossip. If there is anything real to announce, it will come from the four of us as a group.

Until then,
Page"

thats pretty much saying "its gonna happen but calm the fuck down cuz its still a ways off"

ill take it

also various rumors confirming other rumors, apparently the bands had several dinners together and have spoken with lillywhite about directing the next album per http://www.phish.net , but no legitimate source

and since page tells us not to focus on rumors and gossip lets do the exact opposite!!!!!!

apparently the bonnaroo people and the manchester chamer of commerce has opened the bonnaroo festival site to other events and phish is in the works of securing their own festival there, once again this is just unsubstantiated baseless rumors from phantasytour

Quote :
"The truth about Phish and Bonnaroo is this;

Is Phish playing Bonnaroo

Yes

Is Phish playing The Bonnaroo the music festival

No

Phish has a hold on Bonnaroo in the early spring and fall next year.

They will be playing their own festival there, No other bands. Just them on the roos land with us. This has been in the works for 2 months. The show is not 100% but most likely it will happen. I spoke to two people who have confirmed this. They are waiting to see what the band decides but this will be the first festival back. "

Quote :
"the roo land has been officially opened up for other uses, and the phish to play the farm rumor was floating around months and months ago. many reasons why this would work. proven organizational system of the site, coran capshaw's involvement with trey, the phish, and roo, etc. "

Quote :
"Russ Bennett, the artistic director of Bonnaroo is the guy who sets up the grounds, lays out the stages, decides how many portopotties, all that stuff.

He got his start doing festivals cause he was an artist that Phish choose to do the Clifford Ball. They liked him, so he did the Went and on and on it goes.

Just saying... "

::Bookmarks thread::

"Why would Phish want to pay AC/Superfly to rent the land((Who know how much money is involved??)) when they can rent an old airforce base or something of the sort for pennies???

AC/Superfly own the land and are going to want crazy money. "

Because for the money spent they would get crowd control, traffic management, grounds mgmt, etc. Things they (the band) themselves would not have to worry about since they will likely have a scaled down organization. Just pay, and the shit gets taken care of. Outsourcing baby! This seems like it could be a legit option... "
