Apparently their is buzz about the Heat possibly taking Mayo at 2. 6/25/2008 10:25:32 AM |

I think of Mayo and all I can think of is his last game vs. UCLA with Westbrook on him.
40 min., 4 pts, 10 TO's.
Granted, he went off in a ton of games, but Westbrook was a great defender...I'm just wondering how many great defenders he went up against this year. I know Mayo finished the season strong, just heard he attempted an average of 16 shots his last 10 games, damn.

regardless of when it was pointed out there is huge buzz, today, that the heat worked out beasley and didnt like him or something along those lines. plus, DWade has had a few interviews this week and has spoken openly about his desire to play with his friend, OJ Mayo 6/25/2008 12:30:26 PM |

I think the Heat definitely don't take Beasley with the 2nd pick and probably won't take Mayo either. They want a point guard to go with Wade, and I think they would pick Bayless before Mayo. And with that route, they could trade the 2nd pick and get something really good for it plus a later pick where Bayless is still available. Or they could trade the pick and get a point guard in return and take a big man with a later #5 or 6 pick (like Lopez or Love). 6/25/2008 1:02:53 PM |

if the Heat take Beasley, Marion is gone 6/25/2008 1:04:56 PM |
jbrick83 All American 23447 Posts user info edit post |
I guess I kind of understand that. But at the same time, Beasley could play PF and Marion could play the 3. With Haslem, all three could interchange at the 3,4, and 5 (only with Marion not being able to play the 5 and Haslem not being able to play the 3).
Bottom line is that the Heat desperately need a big man and a point guard before they need another shooting guard or PF/SF. So a big "NO" to Beasley, and then figure out if Mayo can play the point. If he can't, then you trade down and get a point guard in a trade and then pick a big man with the later pick, or you trade to get a big man and get a point guard with a later pick.
I read one ESPN article that said they are listening to the Clippers in a possible trade for Elton Brand and the Clippers' pick in exchange for Marion and the #2 pick (plus another Heat player or two). That way they could still get a point guard with the Clippers' pick at #7 (Bayless still could be available, or Westbrook, or maybe even Augustine).
Or they could trade the pick to Memphis for Conley or Lowry and get a big man with Memphis' #5 pick.
They've got some good options. And with Wade and a good big man and point guard, they can work on building around that and be a title contender again two or three years down the road 6/25/2008 1:17:03 PM |

if they stay at 2, they take Beasley you can't pass on that. They should trade down though, I could seem some teams giving pretty good value for that #2 this year. 6/25/2008 1:18:54 PM |

i still dont understand the whole wanting Mayo at the 2 spot unless, as mentioned above, that he can play the point in the NBA. it doesnt make a lot of sense for the heat to take another SG.
i would trade down if i were them or take Beasley in some sort of trade deal 6/25/2008 1:22:14 PM |

Yeah you can. The guy is going to put up really good numbers his whole career, but he's a shitty defender and has suspect personality and lack of leadership abilities. He could be a perennial All-Star, but I don't think will ever be a superstar. Plus the Heat already have a solid forward in Haslem and an All-Star forward in Marion.
They heat DESPERATELY need a PG and Center. That's why they can pass on Beasley. If they were solid in those positions or Beasley was a Lebron/Kobe type player, then they couldn't pass on him. But they aren't, and he isn't. So I think he'll get passed on.
And a lot of teams are looking at Mayo as a possible PG. If the Heat take him, it will be to play PG. But I think they like Bayless better as a PG, thus they will be able to trade down further and take him....or trade for a PG and get a center later on in the draft.6/25/2008 1:41:15 PM |

I don't think the Heat are factoring Marion into their plans, because they don't expect him to be on the team past the upcoming season
I don't think the heat will take Mayo at 2 if they can't pull a trade
The gap in value between Beasley/Rose and the rest of the players is so huge that they could trade down several spots and still get someone with similar value to Mayo 6/25/2008 1:42:39 PM |

Not a pure SG because he handles the ball so much
I don't think he'd be comfortable with a dominant PG like Paul, Nash, etc. who always had the ball in their hands
I think a scoring PG like Rose or Bayless would allow Wade to be more of a faciliator, which is one of his strengths 6/25/2008 2:40:25 PM |

i think Mayo's game is more suited to the NBA. his college game was pretty suspect at times and the hype machine was still going full steam ahead.

He handles the ball so much because they have had HORRIBLE fucking point guards. If they had an adequate point guard, then he'd never had to bring the ball up court against pressure. Once they get a decent point guard, he'll handle the ball about as much as Kobe, T-Mac, Paul Pierce, or other great shooting guards do.
Same reason Lebron handles the ball so much. Shitty PG play.6/25/2008 2:51:17 PM |

^What?
Jamal Tinsley is like half a century older than TJ Ford.
Ford will do well for the Pacers. He is a bona-fide starting PG in the NBA. The Raptors were just fortunate to have two starting PGs on their team so they could afford to get rid of one. We'll see if this was the one they should've gotten rid of. 6/26/2008 2:54:33 AM |

It's really complicated, but Charlotte keeps the pick if they get 1-12 in 2009, 1-10 in 2010, 1-10 in 2011, 1-3 in 2012, or they forfeit it entirely in 2013, no matter what. They could pull #1 and Denver would get it.
I'm not sure if the pick #'s are entirely accurate, but that's close anyways. Denver really didn't need that pick anyways this year, so they consider it an asset.6/26/2008 10:57:03 AM |

The Clippers and Sonics have agreed to swap picks as long as the Wolves take O.J. Mayo at No. 3. If Mayo isn't drafted at 3, the deal is off according to two sources close to the information.
With the No. 4 pick, expect the Clippers to take Eric Gordon of Indiana. They've coveted him as the type of dominant scorer that they've been looking for.
The Sonics will take Brook Lopez or Jerryd Bayless at No. 7. However it seems like Lopez will be the guy." |
