^ i tried one similar to that (i don't remember the model) and it gave me razor burn on my neck so bad that i had to coat it in aloe with lidocaine

i do, however, admit to having pretty sensitive skin, especially on my neck

^ do you have that same model? as i mentioned, i have pretty sensitive skin...i've used the fusion and the mach 3, and while they both are okay, neither gets as close as i'd like and my neck is always bothered (i've tried different gels/foams/soaps/etc., too)

i've always heard that single blades get closer than multi-blade units (because the single blades are stiff and don't bend if they come across stiff hair)...is that your experience? do you sharpen the blades, or do you just throw them away and put in a new one? how much does it cost you (in that, do the blades last longer, and how much are they to replace)? the company advertises that you can adjust the closeness of the shave with that model...does it work well?

yes i've had that model for about two years now. i used to have a problem with my face breaking out if i shaved more than once or twice a week (luckily it takes me 2-3 days to even get prickly lol) but i can shave everyday with this if i want to and no problems.

anyways..it def is a closer shave than the new 4-5 blade ones that are out now. i'm not sure why they do a better job but they.. It also takes longer to shave and i generally go over my face 2-3 times. with grain, perpendicular to then against. it takes some getting used to--you will slice your face open easy if you aren't careful but you get used to it pretty fast. the blades are i think $.50 a piece. i usually buy 10 at a time for $5 but i think they're less than that if you buy more. for me the blades just sitting out and oxidizing probably wears them out more so than the actual use they see. i'd say they're a little cheaper overall than what you're probably using now but i wouldn't buy it just based on that or anything. yea the closeness adjustment def work although the 'closer' you get the easier it is to cut yourself so i don't get very aggressive with it.

there's a forum i found once that really goes into detail about all of this..do some google'ing and you should be able to find it but overall i think you'd like it.

I have the Arcitec,
love it and use it when I am in a hurry.

I use 2 types of saftey razors for normal shaving, a big nive one for home and a cheaper twist to open on for the road.

My Norelco is adequate for everything except my neck.

I was thinking about trying my hand at a straight razor, just for the neck and cleanup that the electric won't get to.



Anybody use one of these? I know they are a lot of work but they are a superior shave once you get the hang of it.

alright, so there are 3 brands of double-edge safety razors i'm considering: merkur, parker, and weishi

seems that merkur is top of the line, parker is a close second, and weishi is cheaper, but for no reason i can tell

merkur seems to be expensive for no reason (in that, i find a number of people who say that parker - and even weishi, to a lesser extent - are a much better value since they're of the same quality), so i'll probably toss out that brand

amazon has 6 models of parker (some come with 100 blades) for ~$30 with free shipping...so i guess my biggest question is this: should i go with a long handle? how about weight (is heavier better)?

weishi is sold mostly in kits (one is $26 shipped with a 15-blade sampler...another is $33 with 15 blades and a brush)

suggestions?

i guess it boils down to weight and length...is a "heavy" razor preferable to a standard ("classic") one? is a long handle simply preference, or does it offer an advantage i'm not aware of (maybe only for people with long faces or hands)?

ah, i think i'm going to go with the parker 22R ($27 with 10 blades via amazon) or 90R ($20 with 5 blades via ebay, or $27 from amazon)...i figure i'll try the 7am blades, but probably end up with derbys or feathers...seems like they're the hands-down best for beginners because they allow for a little pressure without nicking (though some people swear by them over merkurs)...they also come with decent travel/storage boxes, instead of the cardboard ones the merkurs come in
