Invest in something long term that is guaranteed to rise. Investing in the dollar is pretty silly right now. You should be trying to get rid of dollars. Not save them.

What if you need the money soon? Obv if I have money to invest long term I'm not going to let it sit in a saving's account.

Assuming you are eligible for a roth ira, you can have multiple roth iras with multiple mutual funds, stocks, whatever as long as you don't go over the $5,000 limit for the year.

I'd only be using it as a place to leave money for a bit until I want to use it. Not REALLY to save, that's what retirement funds are for. This is just a place for play money that will happen to make a little money in the meantime, rather than just sitting in my checking account doing nothing.

At the very least you should store it in a money market account or high interest savings account.

Real quick, for those of you who use emigrant direct check this out

https://www.dollarsavingsdirect.com/DollarSavingsDirectWeb/index.jsp

I really enjoy emigrant direct. The only difference I can tell between the two is that this one requires a min balance of $1000.

Also has anyone tried the Charles Schwab checking account before, or anything like that?
Thoughts, comments?

Any minimum balances or fees?

What's so great about it?

Also, how much is an overdraft fee?

no minimum balances in any account, just have to open a brokerage account, also with no minimum balances (i use a different brokerage accnt, so i keep ~$10 in the cs account just so it's not empty)

their online banking is really nice, albeit a little counter-intuitive at first glance

the monthly statements are well prepared, etc

the interest rates on the checking accounts vary by sustained balances, mine's hovere'd ~2% since inception

but what i love the most is unlimited atm fee refunds, no restrictions.

no fees either, i kinda dont get it and keep looking for a catch, but haven't found one yet

they've got a 2% cash back visa card which is one of the best cash back cards out there, hard to find 2% without restrictions

I have had an ING direct account for about 5 years now. Very easy to manage. Also have regular automatic withdrawals from checking each month split into a CD and cash reserve at Ameriprise (sister-in-law is a CFP there). Then we stick some into our CFCU savings and 401(k)s.

^It now only has a 2.65% rate, not bad considering my ING is down to 1.85% but does anyone know of an account with a better rate?

I've got money with ING Direct, and I have that account linked to my ING Sharebuilder account. It's really convenient, and the Orange Savings account is drawing 2.20% APY right now, which is better than any brick-and-mortar bank these days.

^I hate ING Direct, mainly because I know there is better out there.

ING Direct is paying 1.85% on their savings account, not 2.20%

it's not a teaser rate. They lowered it once about a month or two ago, but before that it had been at 5.01% for around a year.

Just under 1% for my online account via American Express but no special requirements and great customer service. Could probably do better but it still beats your average bank.
