Paper is recyclable and comes from renewable sources.
Once gas is burned the damage is done.
Nice try though.

As we all know, no energy is used to produce paper.

Because there are so many marketing methods that require no energy consumption.

Then stop marketing critical mass. You can shrink your carbon footprint and stop being a nuisance.

I am in no way involved with Critical Mass.

With any type of promotion there are costs involved. I'm sure most of the people that promote cycling as an alternative to driving feel that their efforts have a net gain or they wouldn't be doing it.

Sorry you can't see the big picture. The self-proclaimed win was a nice touch though.

It are fagots like these critical mass bikers that make me want to run over the next biker that blocks my transit by biking 3 ft into a narrow 2-lane road.

I have no problem w/ "sharing" the road. I have no problem delaying my journey a couple seconds till i can safely pass if the biker is making a reasonable effort to stick to the edge and is moving at a reasonable pace. I do get annoyed when they bike 3 ft in the road or i get stuck behind a biker on a narrow road. I get inflamed and want to run one over when they bike two deep instead of in a line.

The Russians and the Chinese operate on the principle that oil is renewable and that Peak Oil is a myth. They have good evidence to back up their theories as well.

Yeah but don't we have tree farms for paper? Planted for the sole purpose of making paper?

yes, and we also have paper mills that use tons of toxic chemicals to process paper. They also tend to contaminate their surrounding environment in the process with dioxins and furans, just to name a couple.

As a cyclist I always wondered if I was the only one annoyed when people ride 2 or 3 deep. Turns out I'm not, several of my friends who are avid cyclists and bike competitively also get miffed when a bunch of jokers ride wide. We call them "road chodes" by the way. Also an acceptable name for critical mass jackoffs.

I don't like it when people take up the road unnecessarily on bikes. Its just generally inconsiderate. Its harder for everyone to pass them.

I see cyclists pulling dangerous and illegal maneuvers on the road too often. I told one guy he should signal when he changes lanes and he looked like he was gonna try and kick my door in.

I mean they know they're taking up both lanes and think they should be taken seriously. Vehicle laws specifically saw "vehicles moving slower than the traffic should stay to the right". This INCLUDES CYCLISTS.

Most people take a shower once they get to work. In fact i'm working at an engineering firm working on LEED certification, and one of the requirments for points is having a certain number of showers for bike commuters.

I have recently noticed that a number of cyclists around the university break traffic laws in a blatant and dangerous manner.

This includes riding on the opposite side of the street, not having lights on the bike at night, not stopping for stop signs and traffic lights when cars are present (the light WILL change if there are cars waiting! you can wait too), and not yielding right-of-way to pedestrians.

I almost had a collision with a cyclist early Saturday morning on a neighborhood road close to campus. The cyclist blew a stop sign going fast down a hill to make a left turn as I was approaching the intersection while on the main road (no stop). It was early morning twilight and this person did not have any lights, although they were riding a nice roadbike, and I barely saw them in time to brake, and the cyclist missed clipping the front of my car by a couple feet. This was upsetting to me because we were both going fast enough that it would have been a bad accident for the cyclist.

I've seen enough bad bike behavior lately around Raleigh that I am sure it is not a case of a few poor cyclists making a bad name for everyone- the increasing rate of accidents involving a cyclist lately might attest to that in part. My neighbors use bikes as their main mode of transportation, and the guy was hit a few months ago because he was riding down the center line on a road off hillsborough. I followed him from the house to the campus until I could pass him and his friend safely, and he rode up the hill on the wrong side of the road with a blind turn at the top of the hill.

Please follow traffic laws on back streets, even if it costs you momentum. Just because you do not expect a car to be around doesn't mean there aren't any. When your bike costs several hundred dollars, it is quite reasonable for you to purchase a simple headlight and tail light so you can be safe and compliant with the law when riding at night.

thanks,

a conscientious driver

Hey Skack, how about word of mouth and the internet. A couple of message boards, mailing list, and a website should be more than enough. I'm sure at least some of them have meetings as well. And while that does use energy/electricity or whatever, at least its not something laying out in the street or piled up in the trash. Besides it appears they are already using it, they just aren't utilizing it as much of a tool.

^ He deserved to be fired. Hopefully he'll get an assault charge to go with it. That guy could have very easily ended up with a broken hip or worse. The cop was the obvious aggressor by going after him even though he was not heading towards the cop in any way. Fuck him.

I would almost bet that cyclist was flippin the bird to the cop, thinking he could just ride past him. Of course that doesn't make it right, but I wonder why he singled out that dude.

Nah...You can see that the cop started walking that way looking for someone to single out. He was just the rider that happened to come along next.

The cop didn't make any sort of gesture requesting that the cyclist stop. Instead he did a bitch move and effectively blindsided him as he passed. Fuck that guy.

Sometimes I really want to start doing douchebag-type things in hopes I could sue the cops and make bank in exchange for a little pain and humiliation.

I can think of four incidents off the top of my head
1. This cyclist.
2. That McDonald's cashier that got in a cussing match with a cop, he maced her, she won $60,000
3. Skateboarding kid gets thrown down by a rent a cop for repeatedly calling him dude.
4. Dude who was a dick to cops on videotape in his car after getting pulled over, cop threatens him, dude makes bank.

NYC Cop Decks Cyclist during Critical Mass:

I ride a lot throughout this city, but have never done critical mass. It brings the wrong kind of attention to cycling.

Sounds like these guys are the black panthers of the cycling world. They think they're cute but if things ever got heated up, theyd get laid out. They seem to forget that when it comes down to it, a car can seriously mess you up. Acting like douche bags is never gonna win anyone over.

As someone who will be biking to campus next semester, most likely on some roads, what are some rules you think I should follow?

obviously:

1) Ride on the right side of the road, as far to the right as possible

2) Dont pass cars at traffic lights or during slow traffic? (at the same time cars will have to wait for you to accelerate when the light changes)

3) generally dont ride at night

4) dont act like I am superior for riding my bike to school

sounds like cyclists are a real pet peeve for some people, Just wondering what you bike haters consider good etiquette

Let me add the following:

1- Take the lane if you're going the same speed as traffic. But generally, yes stay right.

2- Never pass cars in the gutter/ shoulder. It may seem like a good idea at times, but it'll get you into a sticky situation at some point.

3- Get lights. You'll need both a headlight and a tail light. Sometimes you get stuck on campus later than you planned. Its in everyone's best interest if you have lights for night riding. I recommend going to REI for this. The cheap ones at Kmart or Target will crap when you need them. Its worth $25-30 bucks to be seen and they'll last for a while.

4- Don't act superior, but don't put up with crap from morons in cars. Ride defensibly and signal at all times. Expect drivers to behave like retards and you will avoid accidents.

I think lights are probably cheaper if you go to a shop. Performance just opened in Cary a few months ago.

I forget what brand it is, but the headlight i have on my bike is as bright or brighter than the ones on a car and the battery fits in the water bottle holder.

good stuff if you want to be seen at night.
