he was as good as dead to me after he left office, although he was a great representative of NC when he was in office.

Well, I know half of the city of Monroe is mourning - there were like a dozen kids with the last name Helms at my high school in nearby Weddington.

Too young to know a lot about him. Basically... racist bigot who also hated gays, worked on behalf of Big Tobacco, dedicated to small government, and put the state of NC before all else. A mixed bag, but there were definitely a lot of negative things about him. Didn't present the best image NC has to offer, but did a lot of good work. More than most senators probably.

product of a different time and age, so I'm not gonna hate on him b/c of shit he said, especially if he stayed constant throughout the years. At least he said what he thought and didn't give a damn about what other people thought. He was a damn good represenative of NC, and did a damn good job. I think he probably stayed there too damn long (but then again, I think that about a lot of the 90 year old politicians in office), however, he was baller.

I don't think he's in hell, and I only think people "hate" him because they only wish they could have been as baller as he was.

I think throwing Hitler into the same group as Helms is pretty disrespectful.

Quote :
"In 1960, he moved to the executive offices of Capitol Broadcasting Co., the parent of WRAL, and he developed a strong following across eastern North Carolina over the next decade by appearing in editorials that ran at the end of each night's evening newscast. The editorials blended folksy anecdotes with conservative viewpoints that blasted the federal government, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and other entities he viewed as too liberal. In one noted editorial, he suggested building a wall around the UNC campus, which he called the "University of Negroes and Communists," so that its liberal sentiments could be contained."

All comments about his beliefs aside, it's amazing the kind of shit you could apparently get away with saying on television back then. A different era, indeed.

He's listed at 7' but I hear he was only 6'11" Apparently all politicians give themselves an inch or two in the program.

it wasn't a problem back then, today if a politician said that it would be all hell breaking loose.

that kind of attitude was just how it was back then.

You know you've had a great career when the bottom 10% of society considers your death a win after spending decades failing to defeat you.

RIP Jesse.
