God this thread shows why I hate our country and our two-party system so much....
Some of you are so dedicated to your party that you like it when an opposing party member dies?
That is pretty damn harsh. 7/4/2008 7:40:49 PM |

I think Jesse Helms -- or his family -- caused him to die on July 4th with intentional planning.
he had been on his deathbed for some time.
they pulled his lifesupport at 12:01 am. he was pronounced dead at ~1:30 am

Good riddance. Klansmen do their shit in private, Jesse did it in public. I'm a Republican, and even I can recognize he was nothing but a bigot representing bigots. Conservatism is one thing, but his actions were in most cases nothing but hatred and spitefulness.
I can't believe that there are politicians stupid enough to actually want to be photographed with him. 7/5/2008 12:13:36 PM |

Helms was not a bad guy.
I despise his politics and a lot of things he said and stood for...
BUT... he also did a lot of good. Nobody from that generation who took up politics and was in public service for that long has a squeaky-clean record. People do and say bad things and the bad things always seem to cast a shadow over any good. Doesn't automatically make them bad people. 7/5/2008 2:20:32 PM |

To the above commenter on "these people are usually miserable" -- well, aside from the supreme ignorance of your statement -- what misery "these people" endure is largely attributable to the likes of Jesse Helms and, most importantly, the people who voted him into office term after term.
And on that note I will say that I don't wish any particular ill on him or his family (and never have). He was a man doing his job, if zealously. His job was to represent the people of North Carolina; and that he was regarded as having done it particularly well, does not say much good for the state.
NC has a long history of bad policy that pre-dates Jesse Helms by many years. When the state stops acting like a backwater, it will stop being one. 7/7/2008 12:47:32 AM |

I don't think you can really compare these two. Byrd was a member of the KKK who left them and has since done a 180, condemning his old views and worked hard to correct his past - actively in politics.
Helms was consistently a racist and bigot and used these features to get elected. He changed on a small facet of his overall agenda after he left office.7/9/2008 4:26:06 PM |

Don't you think if Helms was as big a racist as some of you are making him out to be, he would've joined the Klan? I just don't get how Byrd gets a free pass because he says he was sorry. He also said "I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."
Helms certainly wasn't a saint, but I always get a kick out of how some people will defend Byrd because he said he was sorry, and jump all over someone like Helms for being a racist
It seems to me that if you're in the KKK, or another similar organization, you can't exactly just apologize and be forgiven...its kind of a serious thing when you are a member of the Klan...believe it or not, its actually worse than being a politician 7/9/2008 4:45:01 PM |

I don't have to make any more points when you can't even see that Skank destroyed your argument before you made it. All I can do is attempt to split it all up and quote and bold shit for you hoping that maybe you'll get it. The point is you didn't make a point. You could attempt a rebuttal or a clarification or another example or anything other than getting dominated and then being a nuisance, but why would you actually do that, it wouldn't be very TreeTwista-like. He clearly doesn't. Being the member of that organization in the past is horrible and he's had to fight tooth and nail to restore his image and prove he doesn't believe that stuff anymore. I think he's done a fairly good job, though not perfect.
He's also against gay marriage and a slew of other things that I think are morally right. Listen, I'm not a fan of the man, but I don't think he's a bad person. I think he's made bad decisions but in the past 25 years he's worked hard to correct them.

It has nothing to do with what he's said, it's a result of his actions over the past 20 years. I could give a flip if he said 'sorry' and continued the same behaviors, but this is not the case for Byrd.
Helms did not apologize and he did not change his actions therefore it is a completely different case. 7/10/2008 1:17:17 PM |

Byrd was filibustering civil rights legislation 25 years after he left the Klan...just 7 years ago he used the term "white nigger" twice on national TV...how much changing has he really done?

I wouldn't go as far as to call Helms a piece of shit. Had it not been for Helms in 1976 delivering NC to Reagan, we may have very well never gotten the 8 years of Ronald Reagan.
I could also raise his abundance of conservative issues that he was a champion over. Was he perfect? Far from it. I will not deride the man for his past. It's a part of his record. It always will be. I'm not trying to whitewash it, but I certainly understand the conservative values he pushed for many many years. He was one of the lions of his generation to usher in Ronald Reagan, Newt Gingrich, etc.
