i got a shadow ace a couple of months ago... i've had a blast on it. i've gone to the beach prolly 4 more time this year than i woulda if i had to drive my truck. 50 mpg is so much better than 12. if u get a cruiser go as big as u can i was wanting more motor after the first two weeks and mine is a 750.
7/22/2008 10:57:28 PM

i think i'm getting a 599 or 919 (yah yah i know its big blaah) but i'll respect the hell out of either so i'm not worried and both have the same hp the 919 is just efi and lower compression and an over-all lazier motor.
7/24/2008 9:47:26 AM

I'm debating whether or not to buy a bike now.I'd like a CBR600RR or a guy I work with is selling his Ducati. Not sure what to do.
7/25/2008 4:04:26 PM
CBR Ducatis are nice...just $Texas
7/25/2008 4:06:47 PM
Everytime I think I want a motorcycle, I just read some of the stories the guys in the garage post about being in multiple wrecks and it cures me.Hell, just read BigBlueRam's story. [Edited on July 25, 2008 at 4:10 PM. Reason : d]

Dukes are nice and are waaaay sexier than hondas but they have waaay more issues too.how long have you been riding ?
7/25/2008 4:10:37 PM
I haven't. The thing is the price is right, and the timing is right. I'm only toying with the idea. The only thing that makes me hesitate is the fact that I was driving to work and this guy on a bike next to me spun out. He was only wearing a tshirt and shorts, thoguh he did have a helmet on. I've honestly never been so disgusted in my life and I've never ever seen a person bounce the way he did. It made me lose my appetite, and has almost scared me out of buying a bike. But really- he just went to pass me and lost it.
7/25/2008 4:16:18 PM
Yeah see he is what most bikers would call an idiot or a squid. A 600rr is a nice bike but i wouldn't really call it a beginner bike. What duc is the guy selling.... You really probably shouldn't get a "race ready" (rr) bike for your first they're not comfy on long rides and are made to handle at a level that you shouldn't attempt for a while.
7/25/2008 4:20:47 PM
I don't remember the the exact ducati but I know it's like the honda posted but I think it's a 651cc. Not 100% sure, it's a nice bike. Fairly new too.
7/25/2008 4:42:44 PM
yeah, motorcycles scare me (though if you ask most people, me riding around on a scooter is even worse, since it's not like i can give it gas to get out of the way if i notice something wonky)but i really want another one (i only rode my nighthawk in the country when i lived at home and sold it when i moved to raleigh for the entire year)...i don't care if it tops out at 60mph...i just want something safe, reliable, and stable

7/25/2008 4:49:10 PM
sumfool, that be purdy
7/25/2008 4:50:57 PM
we should get a t dub ride going......
7/25/2008 7:50:22 PM
What scares me is that I've put in about 26k in the last 2 1/2 years and a lot of people do 1/10 of that. Riding that little and wearing such little protective gear is a recipe for disaster. At a couple k a year you can barely maintain your skill level and are pretty much a perpetual n00b.Oh yeah, I gotta swap out my clutch next weekend once I get the parts. Got to take it apart this weekend so I can decide if I need to spend the big monies on a basket or can get by with just the innards. Fun times ahead. [Edited on July 25, 2008 at 8:08 PM. Yeah when i get mine it will be my primary mode of transportation thats one of the reasons i like the 919 better than the 599 cause i don't want the carbs to get all dicked up in the winter and traveling and shit... Also the lower rev limit and the lower compression ratio also leads me to believe it'll be pretty reliable
7/25/2008 8:11:30 PM
A guy I used to work with has a 919. If you get it, at least I'll finally get to ride one go out in a blaze of glory
7/25/2008 9:13:23 PM
hahaha yes.. yes you will
7/25/2008 9:14:33 PM
This sounds weird but I actually feel safer now on a motorcycle than I did driving a truck. I am a lot more alert than I was while being encased in a steel frame and I feel as though I can get out of danger quicker and better than in the truck. You also realize how horrible most other drivers are.

why did you delete that your f4i is fast? seriously getting an race replica as your first bike is like doing a pornstar... you'll probably finish early, you may get hurt and there is nothing but down from there.
7/25/2008 10:42:32 PM
I found a 1992 xj600 for $500. 12,000 miles, "all it needs" is a clutch cable...

I was more thinking KSE ???
8/4/2008 8:07:42 PM
Buying a race-replica type bike of any displacement or a liter-class naked sportbike for your first motorcycle is fucking STUPID."I'll respect it", etc, is bullshit. It will manhandle you. Period. Best case scenario, you don't wreck it (unlikely), but never, ever learn to ride well, because it always makes you its bitch instead of the other way around.[Edited on August 4, 2008 at 8:18 PM. I'll second the SV-650 recommendation I saw earlier on in the thread, although I wouldn't go with anything more powerful than that really. To be honest, it still may be a bit too quick for a first bike but I wouldn't want some soul-less engine like an inline twin or whatever the hell you call those things. You can find a used SV for well under $3000. In fact there are two on craigslist right now, an '00 and an '01, both are going for around $2500. The Honda 599 probably wouldn't be too bad either, I believe it uses the carbureted F3 CBR motor that's been tuned down a bit for more mid-range and less top-end power. It was quite a bit more expensive than the SV when it was new though, so I'd imagine it will cost more to get a used one as well.Speaking of that I'm going to go for a ride now that it's cooled off out there.[Edited on August 4, 2008 at 8:31 PM. I've found my bike1977 CB550F, 4650 miles, it's in awesome condition. If all goes well, it'll be mine by tomorrow afternoon.
8/4/2008 9:51:21 PM
Yeah, be careful with such low mileage at that age. As others have pointed out about old bikes with no miles:-It may not have had a whole lot of maintenance due to never having gone out to ride.-It may not have had maintenance in a LONG time. You probably want to change all fluids at the least.-It may have been ridden hard when it did go out. Although it's probably not as likely with a "standard" bike.-It may need to have any number of things done to it before it will be reliable/safe to ride. If it's good, it should be a decent bike. It seems like it will probably be heavy and may not brake very well. IIRC, lots of bikes that old have rear drums and stuff like that. Personally, I don't think I'd own something quite that old, but if it works for you then great. Let us/me know how it goes. If you're in the area we can ride sometime. This is my bike, I recommend it for anyone considering a relatively sporty bike for their first or second bike, as long as they think they can handle it being somewhat quick. It's only got 72hp and 47ft.lb., but that's still good for 0-60 in ~3.6 seconds, 0-100 in ~10 seconds and the 1/4 mile in ~11.9 seconds:[Edited on August 4, 2008 at 10:23 PM. Reason : ]
8/4/2008 10:16:16 PM
Yeah, rear drum brake. From everything I've read and heard about the 550Fs, the braking is fairly weak, especially compared to modern bikes. It's heavy too, 420 lbs. But I'm getting a great deal on it. Cranked it up today without a problem. I'm going over it with a fine-tooth comb tomorrow before I take it home and It'll get a pretty good check-up after I buy it, too. All-in-all I think it's a perfect fit for what I need/want/am willing to pay.
8/4/2008 10:25:30 PM
Are you in the Raleigh area?
8/4/2008 10:26:21 PM
Nah, greater Winston-Salem metropolitan area.
8/4/2008 10:28:29 PM
Cool. I may be out in Greensboro sometime soon btw, maybe we can meet up for a ride at some point.
8/4/2008 10:38:48 PM

8/4/2008 10:42:14 PM
I worked at Honda of Winston-Salem this summer. As such, I bought one of the last new 06 599s we had about a month ago. I effing love the hell out of it. Already got over 2k on the bike. 56mpg. The only downside of the 599 is that you don't get FI like teh 919, but its not a big deal. Would have gotten the 919 if the insurance wasn't so ridiculous. Regardless, a 600 is plenty of bike, i don't care who you are.
8/4/2008 10:43:34 PM
oh and sumfoo1, 599s are almost completely gone here in the US, at least new ones. Only thing we had left were a few 919s. after they're gone, that's pretty much it. something to think about.
8/4/2008 10:44:44 PM
I'm thinking of selling the Rockster. I'm so busy I don't ride it enough to justify the expense.
8/4/2008 10:47:42 PM
Yeah I like the 599 a lot, a naked bike with a carbureted F3 CBR motor tuned for more mid-range. It seems like an OK beginners bike provided you have some sense. The only problem is they're significantly more expensive (Like at least $1000 more new) than the SV-650, which is what drove me to the SV. I absolutely love riding the SV, but I'm sure I would have loved the 599 as well. Either way, they're both as quick as you'd ever need on the street IMO. Plus, I don't want or need more power for a while, 72hp and a flat torque curve is plenty for now.[Edited on August 4, 2008 at 11:10 PM. Reason : ]
