I think the best concept I have seen come out recently is Powerset http://www.powerset.com
They were aquired by microsoft in August, and I had previously signed up as part of their labs beta...

In beta, yes its a wikipedia search engine ... But the technology powering the search is what is so good, not really the current "breadth" of its search ability.
