to be honest, after going back over my list, i could easily swap some ranks, ie colston, andre, etc...i just think Moss is the best, TO and Ocho are right up there, and Smitty is ballin also 8/3/2008 1:54:27 AM |

Anyone putting Holt in the top 5 is an idiot. Hell, its hard to even justify him cracking the top 10. He is a shadow of his former self due to age/injury.
Just did a quick search and found these from last year: - 2 of 6 ESPN NFL analysts said Steve Smith was the best WR in the league http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2887078 - SI writer (and former NFL player) Bucky Brooks ranked Steve Smith #1 http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/bucky_brooks/06/25/top.receivers/index.html 8/3/2008 2:14:07 AM |

OK I'll explain my opinions. Just remember they're opinions, not facts:
1. Randy Moss:
Why he's not lower: Run downfield, jump over the DB's, make any catch, repeat.
Why he's not higher: The list starts at 1
2. Terrell Owens:
Why he's not lower: lol @ lafta
Why he's not higher: Slightly less unstoppable than Moss
3. Steve Smith
Why he's not lower: - Can score from anywhere, equally dangerous before and after the catch. Has been raping double coverage for years. His production slipped last year with no quarterback - remind you of someone at the top of this list?
Why he's not higher: I don't think anyone is arguing for this one
4. Andre Johnson
Why he's not lower: He finally got a better QB than Carr, and he was enjoying a monster breakout season until his injury. He played enough games to indicate that he'll be great with an actual offense around him.
Why he's not higher: Needs to play at the level he did last year for a full season.
5. Braylon Edwards
Why he's not lower: Like Andre, this is another player whose production skyrocketed upon removing a Carr/Frye type. He's got the size and speed that a #3 overall pick should have. I'm expecting Braylon to become more consistent with another year of decent QB play.
Why he's not higher: His production last year was limited by both Anderson's inconsistencies, and his own.
6. Larry Fitzgerald
Why he's not lower: He's big, physical, and he makes amazing catches. That was enough to dominate in college. He has become smart enough at finding openings to let him make those catches at the NFL level.
Why he's not higher: He isn't going to blow right past you like the guys above.
7. Reggie Wayne
Why he isn't lower: Very consistent at beating DB's.
Why he isn't higher: Has always had the benefit of Peyton Manning. I'm convinced he's this good (#7), but it's tough to judge how he'd do with an average QB.
8. Torry Holt
Why he isn't lower: The decline last year was due to the Rams injury plague on the O-line, which led to Bulger having no time, and getting killed. We all know what he can do. Some of his physical talents may start to decline, but he's still smart enough and skilled enough to get open consistently.
Why he isn't higher: He is getting older, though he's just a year and a half older than Chad, who is younger than TJ.
9. Chad Johnson
Why he isn't lower: He can burn anyone deep, which helps him move the chains when he breaks his routes short.
Why he isn't higher: Definitely benefits from Palmer and TJ (who in turn, benefit from him). He's afraid of contact after the catch, and he doesn't have consistent focus.
10. Plaxico Burress
Why he isn't lower: Great streaking down field and hauling in a jump ball, overcomes Eli's inconsistent throws.
Why he isn't higher: Does his damage deep or in the end zone, Not a consistent short route/chain mover.
11. Marvin Harrison
Why he isn't lower: Has been great for years.
Why he isn't higher: He's turning 36 and has bad knees, and he's starting to decline.
12. Anquan Boldin
Why he isn't lower: Incredibly strong and physical, leading to good YAC.
Why he isn't higher: Others (like his teammate) are better at getting open, or as deep threats.
13. Marques Colston
Why he isn't lower: Another strong and physical receiver: He's not as powerful as Boldin, but probably has better hands.
Why he isn't higher: Isn't going to beat good DB's deep with any consistency.
14. Roy Williams
Why he isn't lower: An awesome talent who can handle deep routes, or shorter ones. His production slip last year was partially due to McDonald and Furrey being ignored by defenses, and his injury.
Why he isn't higher: Inconsistency, drops
15. Greg Jennings
Why he isn't lower: He's a versatile talent: Very good deep threat, and just as good at getting YAC on shorter passes.
Why he isn't higher: I need to see more of him. I'm interested in how defenses adjust to him being the best WR on the team, and how he handles the drop from Favre to Rodgers.

Now that I've had more time to think about it, I'm adjusting my list per my post above:

Here is my list, I am not going on talent, or potential. This is my list based on predicting production for the 2008 season which to me is what actually matters. So I am factoring in qb, team, situation, not punching people in the face, effort, etc. along with talent.
1. Moss 2. Reggie Wayne 3. Owens 4. Fitzgerald 5. Edwards 6. C. Johnson 7. Smith 8. Colston 9. Holt 10. A. Johnson
Harrison I left off because I feel he'll have a tough year w/ injuries, and Wayne is going to have a monster year. Burress is a physical beast, but I just don't like him as much as the other guys. 8/3/2008 2:52:27 PM |

LOL at all this love for Braylon Edwards and none for Brandon Marshall. It's shocking that Marshall hasn't even been mentioned in this thread yet.
2007: B. Edwards 89 rec 1289 yds 16 TD 2007: B. Marshall 102 rec 1325 yds 7 TD
Marshall is younger, he caught more passes for more yards last year, and he's better after the catch. The only thing Edwards has on him is TD's. I guess you guys all play fantasy football. I'm not saying he's better, but having Braylon in the top 5 and BMarsh not even in the top 15 is stupid.
PS Greg Jennings is not a top 15 receiver in this league. I don't know who gave you people that idea, but there are a lot of guys better than him. He went from being very underrated last year to being extremely overrated on this board seemingly overnight.

9 More td's, and a better YPC average(depending on how you want to look at the receptions vs. yard issue).
9 more tds isn't like some minor amount. That is a career for a lot of players. 8/3/2008 3:00:59 PM |

If you haven't gotten a chance, you should watch Marshall play sometime. The guy is a beast with the ball in his hands. Like a young Muhsin Muhammad before he decided that tearing his hamstring on every catch wasn't worth it.
Being a Charger fan, I hate him. But he's gonna put up some monster numbers this year if the league doesn't suspend him for too long. 8/3/2008 3:04:11 PM |

^FWIW I had Marshall on the outside looking in. He is talented, but 13.0 YPC is an awfully low rate for someone who has so many drops. Like Jennings, I'd like to see more. I wonder when I'm going to see more though, considering the offseason injury and possible suspension. 8/3/2008 3:08:26 PM |

Production vs Best receiver will produce markedly different lists for lots of people
Like you with Roddy White
Few would argue that he's one of the top 15 receivers in the league
But being Atlanta's only real option, he may very well produce top 15 numbers 8/3/2008 3:21:20 PM |

^^Thats why Housh is so low, and Plax is in the top 10 despite never gaining more than 1250 yards in a season. Production not being just stats but production on the field.
Of course I considered the offense they played in. Nobody actually saw because he's on Atlanta, but Roddy White was pretty damn sick last year despite catching passes from Joey Harrington. Plus he's young and will only get better. C'mon, how is 1200+ yards in Atlanta's anemic offense not impressive?

^What opportunities? Atlanta's passing attack was pathetic, and he shared looks with Crumpler, Jenkins and Joe Horn. I was high on Roddy before he blew up last year, and I expect him to build on it this year. Just because his team sucks doesn't mean he sucks.
^^I phrased it badly. My list is who I would most want on my team for 2008. In retrospect Hines should be on there, I forgot about him.

looking at reciever rankings from 2006 moss wasnt on anyones top 10 list, now he's number #1
yall and everyone else have a dumb way of ranking people by their stats obviously having a great QB and good team will give the reciever a much better opportunity i look at the player's talent like catching/dropping, speed, jumping, routs, etc to gage who is good
and by those standards T.O. is in the bottom of the top 10 list
