mmmm RATM... by far my favorite band...
I remember listening to Evil Empire on the bus in 9th grade and this girl I liked asked me what I was listening to. I showed her the tape and she saw the title People of the Sun and said it sounded gay. I told her it was very much not gay. I came to hate that girl. 8/19/2008 1:53:57 PM |

the whole point of me starting this thread was to bring up a simple point - this is OUR school not theirs. Yes, it is technically a state owned university, but if you take the standpoint that its your right to make it better for you just like its their right to take your money for educating you, you'll eventually get what you want. The administration DOES hate you and you should hate them right back, and fight with them over every little thing until that situation changes. yea, i was a bit disgruntled when I had to pay, but i was much more upset when i walked into the SGA office and discovered that the student government doesnt do shit here like they should, and yes, i am running for the SGA to change as many policies to favor the students as possible.

^^^^ honestly this is not something worth trying to get changed. there are rules in place that make sense, and 10s of thousands of students at NC State alone EVERY YEAR/SEMESTER follow them and pay their dues on time and have absolutely no problem with the rules. It has nothing to do with them sucking and us just not changing them, it has to do with a fact that there HAS to be a deadline, otherwise it would be a HUGE mess and tons of people would be late and they would have people taking up slots in classes who hadn't paid over people who did.
it has little to do with the school officials and a lot to do with personal responsibility and organization that a grad student should already grasp... 8/19/2008 5:22:50 PM |

You know, the one where I said
Quote : | "At least when it comes to things like stafford and perkins loans, and any federally-funded grant or scholarship." |
Quote : | "yes, i am running for the SGA to change as many policies to favor the students as possible." |
Make sure to let us know what position, ok?
Quote : | "the whole point of me starting this thread was to bring up a simple point - this is OUR school not theirs." |
So?
That doesn't mean they have to coddle 30K students, especially when their only argument is that an already generous policy is that isn't!!! FAIR!!!!!
You've lost, kid. You're at least a little socially and interpersonally developed, very immature, and wholly undeserving of the dignity that a PhD might confer.

I guess there's this thing called "student activism" and "protesting things you don't like", ambrosia, that you don't quite understand. I understand all their reasons for setting deadlines, dropping classes ect. I'm a very responsible graduate student, mind you. I understand their opinion on this matter, I just don't CARE about the administration's viewpoint at all, and I don't think you should either. Why should it be any of your business that they wouldn't have any money? All you should be concerned about is yourself and your quality of life and quality of education. 8/19/2008 6:07:02 PM |

All the information you received from the Graduate School and your department clearly stated you were responsible for fees (not tuition) unless you had outside funding. If you would like to say what program you are in I'm sure we can find it for you and the rest of your roommates. I'm currently looking for a PhD program and almost all of them clearly spell out their funding policies. Most do not have a funding package as easy to understand as NCSU's. You're welcome to join Student Government, I would encourage it, but if it is for crap like what you are complaining about now. Please get a clue.
^(however many I need) And it is not OUR school, it is the Peoples school. Everyone who attends NCSU has a large portion of their tuition paid for by the taxpayers of North Carolina. YOU are being fully funded (except fees) by the department (unless you have outside funding). All that money comes from taxes and endowments. Thank fully the elections aren't till the spring.

If they didn't have any money they couldn't pay the salaries of their employees, the utility bills, for supplies, etc etc etc etc.
So for those of us who ARE concerned with ourselves and our quality of life and education, we pay our bills on time so we can be sure we're in the classes we want to be in.
If you don't pay your bills in time, you don't get service. Seems pretty straightforward to me.8/19/2008 10:48:40 PM |

Between me and my three immediate family members, we've got about 29 years of enrollment at NCSU.
29 years of payments. That's 58 successful payments.
So it does kind of annoy me when I get threatening, impersonal e-mails from the university.
At least brush up the form letter to be a little nicer about things. You'll get your money like you always have. 8/20/2008 3:58:30 AM |

I mean, you're sitting here trying to get them to override a longstanding practice that makes perfect sense and exists for a good reason because you got a letter basically telling you to pay what you owe. 8/20/2008 9:14:01 AM |

I always thought the policy was you didn't have to pay until the 3rd week of school. I know one time financial aid didn't get their shit together and I was given a payment due statement that said I had to pay by such and such date, which was after classes started. I just went to the financial aid department and got a note saying I received aid and that took care of it.
August 1st seems too early to me.
I was also under the understanding that you didn't have to make a lump sum payment, rather you could spread your payments out through the semester, unless of course that was also changed.

Sweet Jesus--are you for real? In case you are, I'm going to help you with this little lesson:
History of G.S. 95
Quote : | "G.S. 95-98 was adopted in 1959, over 45 years ago, in response to an attempt by the Teamsters to organize the Charlotte police. This law is the most extreme of any collective bargaining legislation in the country. Today only North Carolina and Virginia have a complete ban on public employee collective bargaining." |
