the fuck Texa$ travels well...start on I-9 in east Texas and head west...worst trip ever...and I only went as far as San Antonio...although that was a pretty cool city...if you're going through Texas, find some back roads because the scenery is beautiful and the interstate ruins it. 8/18/2008 11:58:09 PM |

most of the states listed are not even contenders. many of these aren't even bottom 10. I think I've been to 43 states now, give or take maybe 1. I'm pretty confident in that assessment.
My vote is arkansas. that's the shittiest place I've ever seen in a first-world nation.
A lot of Alabama and Mississippi suck big time, but even they aren't as bad as Arkansas. Plus, Alabama has a couple of nice beaches and Huntsville. I mean, it sucks, but it's better than AR. MS is slightly less shitty than AR, plus it has Biloxi, which is...worth a little something. I'll rate it second worst.
The only parts of Michigan that I've seen are a hellscape, but I hear the UP is really nice.
West Virginia kinda sucks, but not as much as Arkansas. That place is fuuuucked up.
South Carolina? The low country keeps it out of the bottom 5. Maybe out of the bottom 10. You gotta remember how much generally sucky Rust Belt states there are.
Yeah. Definitely Arkansas. I've seen a number people living in fucking tents there, on the outskirts of an exceptionally shitty trailer park. The cities are run down. The only thing it has going for it are the Ozarks, but even those are low (bottom?) of the list of American mountains. 11/6/2018 11:11:14 PM |

Having been to every state, except for AK, I can confidently say it is MS or MO. Although, OH is pretty high on the list.
MS - nothing redeeming about this state, hot, humid, boring, the coastal cities are trashy
MO - hot, humid, land-locked, boring as hell to drive across, depressing 11/7/2018 1:14:55 PM |

Mississippi is terrible, but how do you figure that it's worse than Arkansas?
Missouri? I mean...well...St Louis has some cool stuff in the parts where you aren't terribly likely to get robbed or shot...and I hear Branson is OK, though I've never been. That's not much, but it doesn't take much to beat out Arkansas.
Is there some redeeming quality to AR that I'm not thinking of?
[Edited on November 7, 2018 at 6:01 PM. Reason : and oh my god, the fucking AR hillbillies. Different species from NC rednecks. Not in a good way.] 11/7/2018 6:00:17 PM |

Just to generalize from my anecdotal experiences...
Alabama is probably the shittiest state I've been to, but I've only seen Birmingham (PapaJohns.com Bowl). Hear Huntsville is great, though.
Trenton is probably the next shittiest city I've been to. Princeton was really nice.
Just driving across the border from NC to SC there's a noticeable decline in the quality of roads, trashier people, etc. Charleston is a gem. Myrtle is fun but has a really seedy underbelly and hobo camps in the woods on the west side of highway 17 like in Little River.
I think, as a whole, the deep south states like Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas usually rank poorly on any kind of scale that would indicate it's a shitty place to live. 11/8/2018 11:35:17 AM |

This is super subjective. I would say anywhere that it snows a shit ton is a shitty place.
Also, New Jersey has to be near the top of only for the massive amount of assholes that live there as well as the rampant government corruption.
Also, if you include Myrtle Beach as a positive for SC, that should tell you that SC is a super shitty state.] 11/8/2018 11:46:38 AM |

In reality, I've visited every state and can unequivocally say that Connecticut is the shittiest state with the shittiest people. Everything is old, gray, and drab. And the weather sucks too.

I spent a week in Little Rock training for work and stayed downtown. I was expecting it to be a shithole po'dunk town, but I actually had a pretty good time. Lots of good breweries and eclectic restaurants. Live music on the river. Friendly people. Kinda reminded me of downtown Durham.
I can't speak for ANY other part of Arkansas, but I liked little rock
