The combined install base of the iPod touch and iPhone should eclipse the 360 install base by the end of the year. It should eclipse the Wii install base by the end of next year. If Apple continues to play their cards right internationally, as they are doing now, it's going to be the next RAZR phenomenon. It's not about percentage of the market for cell phone ownership, as much as it is about monetary percentage. Apple makes a killing off the hardware, then again from the value add services, then again from the applications.

right, but how many cell phones are there compared to the iphones/ipod touches? Remember those little cheap disposable thingy's before apple rolled around... regular cell phones with the same features of making a call, playing music, taking pictures and video (oh wait, apple doesn't have that) without the neat multi-touch interface?

I mean honestly, you can't really compare the iphone gaming market with the consoles... apples to oranges (no phun there! ) and there was an already huge casual gaming market on cell phones and mobile devices before apple stepped in. I do agree that apple's gain in the market has become something of legends and I think it already surpassed the whopla factor of the ole RAZR phenomenon, but Apple did over-estimate their success of the iPhones and their Apps store in sales by a large margin. Still a great success in all eyes though.

^ I think you missed the subtle point that 5% minus 3-4% equals 1-2% growth, which can be defined as stagnant.

That is fucking retarded numbers. Sure it's a drop in the bucket against the total market. We are talking about VIDEO GAMES here. As a platform, the iPhone will eclipse every other handheld and home gaming platform by EOY 2009. And guess what games sell like hotcakes?

Hehe, that's probably not true, the DS is around ~80 million worldwide right now and is still moving ~1million a month. I could definitely see the iPhone become the dominant mobile gaming platform, but its going take more than a couple years.

I hope you're right but I'm predicting LittleBigPlanet to be somewhat of a flop. It just doesn't have much of a market inside the PS3 userbase.

And yeah, 2020 sounds about right. It really could have come much sooner than that but the current market (platform with the shittiest graphics dominating the rest) will dictate the rate of graphics hardware development.

market predictions range from 18-45 million iPhones to be sold next year.

Keep in mind, the Apple App store is iPhones and iPod touch. There are already millions (if not 10+ million) ipod touches out there. The DS has been on the market for 4 years.

that's pretty much a useless number, because there are multiple hardware and software platforms involved

I don't know what handhelds and iphones have to do with the home console and PC market.

Handhelds have always been pretty separate.

so you say you never played texas hold'em on your crappy POS shit phone before the iphone or atleast seen someone else play something simlar? There was an already established casual gaming market on phones before the iphones/ipod touches. Pretty much any modern phone for the past few years were capable of playing cheap, crappy javascript games.

I do think Apple's Apps store will become a dominate infrastructure for selling games and such, but you have to realize that not everyone can afford or willing to pay the insane monthly cost of a data plan and you will still have millions upon millions of shit phones out there. I also do think while the iphone/touches are relatively small in terms of the % of mobiles devices already out on the market, they will capture market share with games in no time.

Because... it's only a matter of time till we see photorealistic games on our iPhone version XX 2040?

The iPhone supports FULL openGL. There's a huge, huge difference between a shitty phone running Java or Brew software games, and a phone running full hardware accelerated 3d along with sensors out the butthole.

I don't doubt that and they are one of the most successful "smart" phones/pda's. I mean if you are playing a casual game, I don't think it's a huge huge HUGE difference if you play a simple game on your POS phone or iphone. I play texas holdem on my pos phone and on my touch and the game play is pretty much the same, minus a little bit better graphics.

Sure, there will be those cool games on the iphones and really can't wait to see what developers can do with the tools at hand. But it's gonna turn out to be segmented just like the PC industry is at with casual games and hardcore games again, just on a much smaller scale on a much smaller platform with "limited" capabilities. I say limited only comparing from PC to cell phones.

Games that have Wii kind of gameplay on the iphone are interesting and they (in theory) should only get better over time. But well produced games will still take $$$ to produce compared to simple casual games.

You know, there's such a large range there that it's a bit silly to even bring up.
