a more apt precursor would be bands like joy division or the cure

a more apt precursor would be the original wave of bands people referred to as "emo" and post-punk/hardcore bands of the 90s who were actually good and which is totally separate to the current wave imo 8/23/2008 9:57:09 AM |

here I typed you up a little summary since that horrible transition (regardless of the song you chose - even though it is a terrible song haha) is actually something I am pretty familiar/disgusted with. Of course there still are bands who are heavily influenced by the old bands and who pull it off well and write some good music. But the bands who were kind of spawned through the linear influence (like im showing) are the ones I cant stand
Fugazi portraits of past rites of spring jawbreaker quicksand embrace etc.
these bands heavily influenced/were the precursor for bands like etc.
jets to brazil sunny day real estate texas is the reason christie front drive piebald the promise ring braid mineral etc.
who heavily influenced/shared members/were the precursor for:
get up kids saves the day jimmy eat world casket lottery appleseed cast planes mistaken for stars hey mercedes further seems forever thursday midtown funeral diner etc.
who unfortunately started to spawn bands like this citing some of these previously mentioned bands as influence or becoming popular because they shared members with previously mentioned bands around the early 2000ish time frame:
taking back sunday dashboard confessional my chemical romance brand new others I cant remember because I distanced myself from this crap.
and from there it was all over. These bands spawned the creation of all the horrendously terrible bands you probably have in your head when you think of the term “emo” today. By the time I was in college, pretty much all of the original bands that I might have lumped into that category who were good were broken up or had fallen into obscurity, and all of the new bands carrying the label had developed ridiculously whiny vocals and were pretty much what you are complaining about today.8/23/2008 10:50:37 AM |

i'm glad i don't listen to the radio all that much

^^ haha. well yea they were fairly "whiny" for that group of bands, most of the others werent. but yea the general comment holds true. the "emo" bands today are so ridiculous they are like bad parodies of the taking back sunday era bands who were already terrible. 8/23/2008 10:57:50 AM |

i caroused through the wikipedia entry this morning after your first post on this page and saw a similar treatise on the transition, but thanks for fleshing it out
perhaps my original confusion arose from bands i was thinking this morning were "emo" are actually "indie"
it's all horsehockey labels anyhow
i listen to rock and roll

psh of course he is. I still rock my White Pony hat to this day as my main hat 8 years after getting it when I picked up that album I dont listen to them much these days (still enjoy them but theyve just fallen down for me with the amount of music accumulated + less free time to listen to music), but they were the first band to inspire me to make music and the first CD I bought, so I wear it around with pride

When At the Drive In split in 2001 Cedric and Omar (vocalist and bass/guitar player) left to form The Mars Volta. The other members went on to form sparta. While the sparta guys are talented, Omar and Cedric WERE at the drive in which is where sparta has fallen short. They lost their 2 creative geniouses to Mars Volta.
