ATTN PEOPLE ARGUING ABOUT VEHICLE MANUFACTURERS.

FORD = CHEVY = CHRYSLER/DODGE = ANY AMERICAN VEHICLE MANUFACTURER.

they all suck, they're all great.

Honda, Toyota, basically foreign cars (other than 3rd world countries) etc, on the other hand, are typically superior (depending on type/model of vehicle)

On my previous car ('96 Lincoln Mark VIII) there were so many obstructions behind and around the oil filter that it was impossible to remove without turning it upside down in the process, causing the oil trapped inside to spill all over everything. Fun stuff.

My girlfriend's apartment kitchen has a drawer that cannot be opened unless the oven door is open because the handle obstructs the drawer.

On Dell Optiplex and Dimension mid-tower computers from roughly 2001 to 2005, the front USB ports were behind a plastic door, slightly recessed, and sitting at about a 60 degree angle downward from horizontal. Irritating if the computer is on a desk or table and you can see what you're doing, almost impossible to use if the computer is on the floor.

Dude, I'm not usually a Chevy/GM fanboy, but have you seen the new Malibus' interior? It actually looks damn attractive and pretty ergonomic. Unless the materials are complete shit, I like it.

yeah, this was the worst shit ever. i have no idea what they were thinking.

add to the list:

ibm 2U rackmount server rails

the cable management bits at the back look like they're supposed to be contorted into the holes on a rack, and the actual mechanism for getting the rails on the rack is hidden and not at all apparent

f foxconn can make HP rails that don't require instructions, and Dell can make their own the same, you have to wonder what sort of nimrod is designing the IBM ones

That has been driving me batty for years. Until recently (actually, about the time that job was switched to work-study funding), all the computers in a lab where I worked were those.

And the computer I'm on now, at another job, is one of these. Unofficial word, though, is that this will be replaced shortly

In one of the EB1 bathrooms, the paper towel dispenser is installed right next to the wall, almost touching it. If I remember right, its one of those 'pull the towel, it breaks off and the next one falls out' dispensers.

The knob to manually turn the roll so another one comes out is...guess....on the right side of the dispenser. And of course, the thing is busted, so you have to turn the knob to get another one to come out now.

the laundry room in my apartment has the dryer on the left and the washer on the right. the dryer door opens to the right, but not all the way, so you have to reach around the door to move the clothes from the washer to the dryer. also, there's just barely enough clearance for the door to open, so standing in front of the dryer while loading/unloading is impossible. basically the whole room is a clusterfuck.

I HATE that plastic thing

And my thread contribution

American urban design ...mid century on... (meisian inspired shit) and the zoning code it inspired. Pure absolute shit. The urban sprawl it inspired has given us so many problems--congestion, useless lawns, sheep that have bought the idea of suburban lifestyle, dependancy on cars, the byproducts of transportation/energy costs/needs etc., city infrastructures that also sprawl (electricity, roads, sewer, water, sidewalks etc) and the costs of maintaining them, desocialized society, strip malls , malls, decomercialized/decaying town centers, the idea cities are supposed to be 'clean', a fat lazy population, etc ,etc, i could go on forever.................

"green" design that doesn't address the actual urban planning/ home design. A builders house that is built tightly, w/ marginally more "efficient" appliances doesn't deserve to be called "green".

You guys are all being stupid about the US vs. the World car arguments.

http://www.toomanycars.info/CarRelationship/Car_Rel-Image2.html

Automobiles are all so interleaved now, you can't really say "Chevy is crap, Toyota is awesome" because they all share tons of platforms, parts, engineering and ownership of one another.

the whole thing where in some apartment complexes there's no light in the ceiling of the living room. The light switch controls a power outlet on the wall, instead of a light on the ceiling. My current apt is like that ( )(and I want to put in a ceiling light instead of having a light switch control the power outlet to my TV+entertainment system) and several other apartments at apartment complexes in cary and morrisville were like that. (even the newer ones).

wtf?

The switch only controls the bottom or top plug in for certain switches. This is designed for lamp use, dumbass.

i hate harrelson. HATE IT.
i do want to bomb the center spiral on a board though.

and my firebird has a cupholder behind hte shifter.. so if you want to shift with anything bigger than a 8oz soda can you have to contort your arm into a painful shape.

mini-fridges that open the wrong direction and cant be adjusted.

The good part about this is that when your water heater rusts out (as it inevitably will do if you keep it long enough) you won't ruin your floor and anything below it.

I didn't think about insulating it though. That's not a bad idea.

It may be done on an energy conservation angle--even plugged in, tv's/everything use electricity.

Also, wall switches for lamps, allows you to turn the lamps on, w/ out making you walk across a dark room. If don't correctly, it's a very nice convience.

i hate this too. when i first moved into my current apartment, i noticed a painted over cover plate where a fixture would normally hang in the living room ceiling. pulled it off and sure enough there were wires in the box. pulled out the mulitmeter and found the circuit breaker to make sure it was still hot, $14 later i had overhead light.

sometimes i like lots of light when working on detailed projects and cozy lamps just don't cut it.

Devices with poor failure behavior. My family once had an '86 Audi 5000, on which the electronic climate control unit died. You would think, at this point, that you would have no heat or A/C until the unit was replaced. No, when the control unit failed, the heat came on full blast and wouldn't turn off. This was in the middle of the summer on a 90+ degree day. EXTREMELY irritating until we brought it in for repair a week or two later.
