Glennon is not on the depth chart, due to the redshirt. We know from the preseason he is at least in the top 3. We know #1 is out, probably for awhile. There are really 2 questions: 1) Does TOB think is better able to lead the team than Evans? 2) Will the short and long-term payoff from playing him this year outweigh the payoff from keeping him redshirted? 8/29/2008 1:12:48 PM |

Exactly. You've never learned from other people's mistakes? The number of qb's that started their rookie year in the NFL and had success pale in comparison to the number of qb's that sat for at least a year.
I'm done argueing about this, I've yet to see one reason to start the kid, the coaches don't think he is ready, the team can't block for him, but whatever, he will end up on the field this season I am sure and hopefully it doesn't set him back.8/29/2008 1:19:02 PM |

1. He isn't cutting it in practice, he wasn't here for spring practice, why would he do better in a game? Not worth burning his redshirt.
2. He is our prized QB recruit. Why are we in a hurry to play him? It isn't like we are "wasting time" or "going to lose him!" This isn't college basketball. He isn't going anywhere.
3. We have no offensive line. They are undersized and any dropback qb is going to get eaten up. Glennon would get beat to shit, and potentially injured. Evans never once had anytime to throw, if he did he couldn't get it there anyway but I'd rather not watch the true freshmen get eaten alive. This is why Wilson was playing.
4. Phillip was the exception not the rule. Also you can just see a physical difference between where Rivers was as a freshmen, and Glennon who looks like he could still be a soph in high school." |

simonn, is this your senior year at State or something? b/c this feels a lot like just wishful thinking against a shitty last year as a student, not so much as a rational argument 8/29/2008 2:26:18 PM |
simonn best gottfriend 28968 Posts user info edit post |
it is my senior year, but that's not why i'm saying this.
i'm saying this b/c we keep wasting seasons, and we need to stop doing that in order to make any real progress.
my argument isn't even for the sake of this year, it's for the sake of next year. instead of just throwing the season away, do something that prepares for success next year instead of starting another freshman qb next year.

^yeah I know, but it's not the same when you're out of the student population
i'm still undecided on how good an idea it would be, part of me wants to see it but I think that has more to do with the fact that I want to see a team that's worth a damn while I'm still in college
at the same time I also plan to be in the area and attending football games after graduating but I don't want to see Glennon last a half a game before getting some injury because the O-line gets rolled play after play and he ends up scrambling and taking big hits way too often

I'm just tired of hearing this "what if" crap about a potential glennon 5th year. I'd rather have a year of growing pains and 3 good years without a starting quarterback controversy than ever see Daniel Evans throw another pass.
I had this sinking feeling that I wasted $290 on season tickets last night when evans showed that he's not a freaking quarterback again.
It sounded like O'Brien was just unsatisfied with Glennon's end of game management. They can game plan for us and put some points on the board, and hope our D is good enough to keep us in games. I'd rather see us put up over 0 points and have an inexperienced QB trying ot win it at the end than have us scoring no points for an entire freakin game. So what if the frosh fucks up at the end if he can put points up on the board for the other 58 minutes. 8/29/2008 3:17:28 PM |

I feel and understand all the arguments. It just seems best if we played our "best" option at QB if he is healthy. I don't think the team will follow Evans...then that just ruins the whole season. I would like to see Wilson come back, but if he out for an extended time, then we should put in Glennon and let him do what he can do out there.
It is good for a QB to sit and watch, if there is someone of good caliber to watch and learn from. We really want him to learn from Evans?

if glennon is better than evans, and we have wilson out for more than two or three games, then he should play undoubtedly.
letting evans continue to drive this program into the ground, if we have anyone who is at all better, is the worst thing for this program right now. a lot worse than using a year of glennon's eligibility and costing him an extra year when we have no idea where our team, our o-line, or glennon will be in 5 years. that's just ridiculous. i don't know that this program can afford a 1-win season, with the damage it would do to recruiting especially. and we can't take that risk. you put the best players you got out on the field. if glennon is one of them (which he has to be), and wilson won't be back anytime soon, burn the shirt. 8/29/2008 3:37:15 PM |

who's to say that he would even start next year if we continue to red-shirt. maybe someone else will beat him out, or he may leave, etc... and the year after that, there will be new recruits and other people to compete with.

This isn't a doomsday situation for Glennon. He just has a better chance of succeeding while at State if we redshirt him this year. When your QB succeeds, generally the team has a good season. If two, three years from now we can't field a team to take advantage of that, it'd be very sad, but the chance it might not work out isn't as great as the chance it will work out.
Glennon != the difference between a 1-3 win team and a bowl team yet, so why put him in a situation to fail and damage his ego? 8/29/2008 4:06:10 PM |

on the play before he took a late hit as he slide.

FWIW the play calling was keeping us in the game. We were finally starting to drive. If USC doesn't seemingly attack Wilson's head, we get at least 3 points on that drive and continue to stay in the game. 8/29/2008 4:45:50 PM |

i am not dissing our overall scheme, just calling a running play for our QB right after he took another hit seemed unnecessary.
I do like that we will have a more mobile qb now but we will be at risk due to his size everytime he runs the ball
^^it did seem as he was supposed to hand the ball and just kind of had to make something out of it himself

Whether that was a designed play or not, the running attack (and running with Wilson too) on that drive was working. I won't debate whether that was a designed play or not, but I don't believe the coaches were putting him in a position to get hurt (they were actually playing to his strengths). That was just a dirty tackle by USC. 8/29/2008 4:58:59 PM |

We were thinking the same thing, but I also thought that unlike in the NFL, there isn't a rule in college about hitting the QB while sliding.
Someone double check that, the one helmet to helmet was pretty bad, but outside that like I said college doesn't protect the sliding qb the same as the NFL. 8/29/2008 5:57:14 PM |

In football, you can play 1 and some change of a second game and receive a redshirt if you are seriously fucked up and can convince the NCAA to grant you a medical redshirt. otherwise the second you stepped on that field you lost a year of eligiblity 8/29/2008 6:54:32 PM |

I'm not an expert on it, and it is pretty complicated, but I think the 10% rule is for injury situations.
I was just under the impression if you play your "redshirt is broken." Or else teams would always be playing their redshirt qbs at the end of games and against weak opponents, and it doesn't happen. Again was just curious about it and thats what I found. Because if that is the case there is no reason he shouldn't be taking some snaps here and there at the end of games, just to get the jitters out. 8/29/2008 6:56:13 PM |
BigEgo Not suspended 24374 Posts user info edit post |
i think it's either 15% or 20% for injuries. idk. but no matter what, the NCAA isn't going to easily give you that medical redshirt. Maybe if your arm had to be re-attached to your body... 8/29/2008 6:58:49 PM |

I just dont fucking understand you people not wanting to play Glennon.
Sure, he's the backup QB, everyones favorite guy in town. But at this point, what the fuck else reason do you have to pay attention to this football team? Evans has proven beyond any shadow of a doubt that he is incapable of playing at this level. Do you want him to keep it up and watch our team go 1-11?
Or do you want to at least feel like we're trying to make progress? Play the Frosh. Let him take his lumps. We're going to lose some fucking football games. I'd rather lose trying something new than doing the same shit over and over and hoping for different results.
We have no fucking options at this point. Evans looks like a deer in headlights. Teams are teeing off on his ass because they dont respect shit about his game. At least they couldnt pin their ears back and blitz like fuck with wilson back there. Thats all I ask for. Something different. Who gives a fuck if it doesn't work....at least we tried.
And for those of you that have forgotten, Evans has thrown the same mother fucking interception on the same damn pass play for at least 4 games in a row now, maybe 5 if I'm missing one from the Miami game. Think about it. The 2 that were run back against UNC were both on some stupid pass to the flat where he stared down his reciever. He then got picked against wake on a good scoring drive ON THE SAME FUCKING PLAY THAT HAD BEEN RUN BACK TWICE AGAINST UNC. THEN TO TOP IT OFF, HE THREW THE SAME INTERCEPTION AGAINST UMD, AND OPENS THE SECOND HALF OF THE SEASON THIS YEAR WITH AN INT ON THE SAME STUPID FUCKING OUT PASS THAT HE GOT PICKED 4 TIMES IN 3 GAMES LAST SEASON (AT LEAST). HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT SUCH STUPID SHIT???????????????????
