you'll be so beat down during basic you won't miss them...it's not like you have idle timei lied about allergies when i was going to the naval academy.
9/18/2008 1:48:33 AM
basic is nothing more than a mind game for ppl just out of high school
9/18/2008 1:49:59 AM
luckily i'm not right outta hs, but i have a feeling that it'll basically be the same thing. i'm kindof excited about getting the shit kicked outta me so much that i'll be able to kick the shit outta someone in return.
9/18/2008 1:53:59 AM
^ you've got a huge misconception. there aint no shit kicking. and you ain't gonna be a shitkicker. Basic is a bunch of grabassing and standing in lines and getting mentally fucked with at 4:30 am.that it and that's all. and you're a dumbass if you enlist in any service. a year after enlisting youre going to be sitting in some barracks staring at your cinderblock wall and thinking "what the fuck did i do this for"go Officer, or go home. i mean seriously... didnt you go to college? was your college career a complete waste?EDIT: what? you got felonies??? holy shit, well forget Air Force. you *might* get in the army on a waiver, and even then be prepared to get the shittiest job. they dont give felons any good deals.[Edited on September 18, 2008 at 2:07 AM. The Marine Corps needs more hotties, go Marines.
9/18/2008 5:06:37 AM
airforce is pretty much devoid of badasses aren't they? or .. what exactly do those rescue teams do that coasties don't?
9/18/2008 5:40:43 AM
oh yeh, my post applies to officers. they couldn't give a shit about enlisted.do you have a college education?if yes, go officer. If you don't you're the biggest dumbass and you'll regret it.if no, go get one, then go be an officer.
9/18/2008 6:38:55 AM
let me get some of that sweet PUSSY before you go lolthat's what I'm talking about
9/18/2008 7:51:45 AM
9/18/2008 7:56:49 AM
they won't take her as an officer if she's no longer in college.
9/18/2008 8:23:29 AM
good luck if you go through with it. just come and hang out with me before you leave.
9/18/2008 9:39:35 AM
ok, saw a recruiting officer today. took my pretest and did very well. i am going to enlist. i'm not looking for a great time, looking for a change in my life. i had it easy enough for long enough. i am going to apply for a specialized job before i enlist, so i'm not going to just enlist and sit an wait. i am seriously thinking about sere. i know it's crazy and shit, but i think i may just be crazy enough to do it.[Edited on September 18, 2008 at 2:33 PM. armed forces wont cure crazy.you're making a huge mistake.
9/18/2008 2:35:37 PM
i'm not trying to cure crazy, i'm trying to get structure and disciplin in my life. i think i'm doing it for the right reasons.
9/18/2008 2:37:34 PM
I think you watched Top Gun and/or Officer and a Gentleman one too many times.you're in for a rude awakening. actually it's not so much rude, as it is just a big deflating disappointment.but whatever. knock yerself out.
9/18/2008 3:21:26 PM
i don't think it's gonna be like that at all. jesus dude, not everyone here is fucking retarded. i know it's gonna be a lot of hard work and a lot of annoying shit is gonna be happening to me, but it's worth it to me. i've been researching it for like, a month, talked to numerous people who are in it. it's not like i'm just gonna jump in and fucking go sign away my life without all the info. why do you say all that you're saying anyway. why are you so negative towards the ida. you've given no reasoning behind your feedback.
9/18/2008 3:27:21 PM
he was in the Navy and didn't have a particularly good time
9/18/2008 3:32:38 PM
what do you think duke? you've met me before, even tho it was a loooooong time ago.
9/18/2008 3:34:08 PM
i've met you, but i don't really know you well enough to sayi've never been enlisted, either (i signed my enlistment papers to go in the Reserves, then ended up in a commissioning program before i ever even left for parris island)I will say that I have done so much cool shit that I otherwise never would've gotten to do. On the other hand, there isn't much cool shit to do in the AF unless you're a pilot (have to be an officer) or a PJ (have to be male)...but back on that first hand, I joined the USMC to kill shitty people, blow up their stuff, travel around the world, etc. You probably have a different set of goals.I think a lot of people in here saying "go officer or go home" are really selling enlisted personnel short. i personally have a much, much higher opinion of my Marines than that. there are some cool enlisted jobs, too. You won't make shit for money for a long time, and you will get treated like a child a lot of times when it isn't warranted.i guess all in all, the military offers some of the best and some of the worst things in a job. I put up with the suck because the cool parts are way, way cool. On the other hand, I fly jets, so my "cool" parts are pretty damned cool, and I'm an officer, so I have to put up with less "suck" in a lot of ways than your average junior enlisted serviceman. It isn't for everyone, but it's a really cool gig for the people suited for it.
9/18/2008 3:41:37 PM
El Borracholook. I'm not trying to be mean. buthere's the truth being enlisted sucks donkey balls*.(*exception: unless you have some highly specialized, kick-ass MOS/Rating where you get to fire a 20mm phalanx or set bombs off underwater.)otherwise whether youre a mechanic or a clerk, youre just one dirtball in a long line of dirtballs for 4 years. if you stick around after that, eventually you'll be NCO, then you'll be the manager of a bunch of dirtballs. which is, i suppose, more tolerable than just being a dirtball. The fact is, as a junior enlisted (<4 years) you have zero latitude for independent thinking, zero opportunity for creativity, no autonomy, no nothing. you just do what they say exactly how they say no matter how back-asswards it is. no questions, just fucking do it, and shut up already.so if you want to be treated like a retarded kid for four years, well, youre going to the right place. you'll get out after 4 years and your training will essentially be worthless on the civilian side. people will smile and say stupid shit like "I thank you for your service to our country" but then turn around and say "sorry, we dont really have any positions that fit your specific skill set". It's a closed system that rewards blind loyalty and discourages critical thinking. The ONLY good thing about enlisted is that you get the GI Bill and whatever service-specific college funding they have, you can apply it to getting a four-year degree at a university when you get out, so is a good option if you cant get a real education funded any other way.now, on the contrary, if you can go OFFICER... if you can get a commission either through OCS or ROTC... THAT is baller, and THAT is a worthwhile way to spend a few years of your life.[Edited on September 18, 2008 at 4:11 PM. Reason : ]
9/18/2008 4:01:24 PM
What MOS are you aiming for?
9/18/2008 5:13:53 PM
Good Lord there is a lot of misconception in this thread.I am a prior enlisted Air Force Staff Sergeant, E-5. I was in a combat communications unit. The Air Force is far from lazy. They have the same fitness standards as the Army, granted they leverage them differently than the Army. The Air Force does have MOS's, they have AFSC's (Air Force Specialty Code). As mentioned, if you have a college degree go Officer or go home. Here is a peek at the enlisted level. The fact of the matter, as with all services, is youre shit. Bottom of the barrel, and part of your day everyday will be cleaning something. In the USAF specifically, the technical training (and boot camp) exams are written at a 6th grade level. Seriously, think about that for a second and forecast what kind of environment you are asking for. Now granted everyone I went through basic and tech school with were cool ass people, but we did have some very, VERY notable dumbasses. One guy tapped a telco's CO, ran a line up a 2 story building in to a room with a common area, and hid the line behind the pay phone so they could plug in and have free internet access, some made free phone calls. This guy was caught (easily) and sent to Ft Levanworth. Other dumbasses would use hairspray as starch so they would have a great looking uniform after ironed. The problem was that this individual was a smoker, and guess what happened... yea... fire from the lighter blew back on his sleeve, and FWOOOOOO, whole uniform on fire. Fucking moron.
9/18/2008 5:30:17 PM
you are going as an officer, right?

my brother in law went into the air force and he literally packed parachutes for 4 years. seriously, if you already have an education, this isn't a very good move. if you want discipline read a book and get a trainer, don't sell your soul. 4 years is a long time.
9/19/2008 2:54:27 AM
it's not that long compared to me fucking around for the past 6.
9/19/2008 3:17:09 AM
sounds like you just wanna postpone the real world for a few more years
9/19/2008 3:29:04 AM
i wanna prepare myself for it more so. i dont have a college degree. so imean, what do i really have to lose?
9/19/2008 3:30:49 AM
Wow, so much misinformation in this thread... its fucking insane.
9/19/2008 3:34:11 AM
^^the trick is being able to follow through on the opportunity. in the end, behind all the decorum and esprit de corps, it's still just a job--you'll have to be the one that makes the changes
9/19/2008 3:38:12 AM
9/19/2008 3:46:07 AM
i fixed it in my second post about it. lol. i know it's sere. i was thinking seal when i was posting. but yeah, i qualify for it.
9/19/2008 3:48:39 AM
If like structure and being told what to do and when to do it all the time go for it. Otherwise it is a great career choice, but it is not for everyone.

haha at a lot of shit in this thread.oh, and point of clarification. Special Forces is Army. period. everything else is covered under special operations (SEAL, TACP, PJ, Force Recon, Ranger, and the like). And the last I checked, no women in those either, I know for sure Ranger and SF is male only. SERE is a school, not a job. Either you're a Graduate of SERE or you're an Instructor. At any rate, if you're thinking about service, think long and hard about your motivation to do it.
9/20/2008 7:19:10 AM
^^, ^ Actually SERE Instructor is a MOS in the USAF.
9/20/2008 8:13:55 AM
yeah, i know. i just didn't know if that's what he meant.[Edited on September 20, 2008 at 8:15 AM. Reason : i doubt it's a primary MOS, though...and while it would be a cool job, it's not really badass]
9/20/2008 8:14:55 AM
Apparently it is, I've met a few SERE instructors. They were squared away guys but it is essentially a permanent training job, I'm pretty sure they don't get deployed.
9/20/2008 8:17:36 AM
that's gay if they have full-time, permanent pogues doing that jobof course, this is the same service that uses college kids a year or two senior to the current class as "drill instructors" in their OCS[Edited on September 20, 2008 at 8:22 AM. Reason : sadfasd]
