Glad I had the chance to enjoy Halloween on Franklin St. a few years ago. Looks like it's going to suck now. Article also said they're reopening the street to traffic at midnight. 10/15/2008 5:14:10 PM |

Quote : | "With Chapel Hill officials cracking down on Halloween revelers this year, Raleigh officials said Monday they don't want the crowds that usually haunt Franklin Street in Chapel Hill to move to Hillsborough Street in the Capital City.
More than 3,000 North Carolina State University students and Raleigh residents celebrated Halloween last year during the first organized Haunted Hike along Hillsborough Street. Even more people are expected Friday night, and businesses are preparing for the event by decorating and hiring extra security.
City officials don't endorse the event and have no plans to close any streets to traffic to make way for revelers. City Manager Russell Allen said officials don't want the problems that have plagued Halloween celebrations in Chapel Hill.
[...]
"The Hillsborough Street hike is an unofficial event. It's not supported by the city at all," Allen said. "We want to make sure that (a Franklin Street-type event) does not take place. (There will be) no official organizers of such an event, and no one is encouraging such an event."" |

speaking of sketch, I remember a few years ago like around 2005, there was a guy dressed as spider man sitting way up in one of the trees lining franklin st. he layed on a limb all night and never moved. dunno when he finally got down. 10/29/2008 4:48:03 PM |

Taxi's always ran from the park & rides that the buses were at, & while you have to spend like 2 or 3 bucks for the ride, it meant much less of a wait. Knowing that less buses will be in operation tonight will only mean they are out in force at all the regular locations even more. The regulations the town council put in place were last minute, and as such haven't been promulgated as much as they might have been. I think tonight will still be huge for Franklin St. But I think this does mark the beginning of the end of for Franklin St, and tonight is the last chance ever to see it in all its glory as the biggest street party in the state or broader region.
Anyone who has the chance should come see it before its gone.

Just got back, it was like usual except a lot more check points and so many cops. They didn't card anybody I saw. Parking was a hassle I had to pay $10 and walk about 10 mins (mile). I saw them telling this old guy he couldn't take his walking cane, he was really old and needed it. There were lots of girls more than usual I thought.
I would rate it 8/10.
also on a side note there were a lot more Hispanics, and didn't see as many "gangsters" as in the past 11/1/2008 1:03:20 AM |
