i believe in one of my business classes they presented a study about the elderly greeter. by placing a person at the door that says hello Walmart actually reduced theft. im sure it works the same way with the receipt checker. they cant actually do anything (just like the greeter ACTUALLY doesnt do anything), but the theft reduction more than pays for their salary.

buddy, i go into home depot sometimes 2-3 times a day, best buy maybe once a week, wal mart maybe once a week

if you think im bulshitting, then just try it once yourself

it was actually very liberating the first time i got to say "no thanks, but you have a nice day" instead of having to go through the 30 receipts in my wallet, all from home depots and walmarts, to prove i didnt steal anything

im not saying be a dick to the greeter/doorman and tell him to go fuck himself on the way out, its not his fault

The personal interaction and potential for identification is a deterrent for sure, and I would guess does pay their wages. As in, talking only monetary cost, they are totally justified.

But the companies who engage in these practices like to make it sound like receipt checkers stop all theft, as a means of justifying them to the customers who object and don't like the policy.

When you consider that, plus the fact that there are better alternatives, receipt checkers are a bad idea. In less lean times, customer goodwill means an awful lot. Shit, I still elect to shop at the local shitty (seriously, I won't buy produce there at all if I can help it, or unless I'll be using it the moment I get home) kroger, not just because it's 24hrs and close, but because literally every time I check out, they say "Thank you for shopping at Kroger", they never give me any grief about using coupons, returning stuff, their staff are either polite, or gone very soon, and if something is mislabelled, or has an old label, they honor the price I tell them, right away. They have the basics, as well as stuff I buy often, and their prices are pretty good on most items. Hell, yoplait whips are cheaper at kroger than walmart.

Given how easy it is to provide awesome customer service, not only is there no excuse not to, it's utterly unconscionable to seek to provide a neutral-to-negative experience, which is the receipt checker's job. Sure, you can be cheery and upbeat while doing it, but the fact remains that as a receipt checker, your job is to stand at the exit, and try to get every single person to stop, as they're leaving the store, and show you a piece of paper they don't need to show you. It is your job to do something to the masses, for the actions of a few. It is your job to be an obstacle.

Normally I wouldn't mind the receipt checking so much, but they never make an effort to check when I'm prepared and have my receipt in hand

But of course, the times when I forget and it's extraordinarily inconvenient for me, they always want to check it

here is an alternative

also 9 times out of 10 i have to hunt down an employee bc there isnt one in sight and when i do they are in a rush to do something else. having more people on the floor AND having them interact with every customer they see can do the same for loss prevention.

so in the gargantuan walmart you want them to hire multiple ppl to man the floor instead of one guy at the door? that doesnt sound very cost effective. i doubt they need that many people most times during the day as well.

I know...I was just using that to illustrate
- how customer service does have value
- that it's not hard to provide excellent customer service

I wasn't meaning to imply that kroger and walmart are comparable (although, with the walmart having their grocery center, and kroger being <1.5miles away, they are competing, around here at least).

As far as an alternative to receipt checkers?More proactive in-store monitoring of customers. The old ways of having staff out of uniform, walking the store, as well as uniformed staff actively interacting with customers who are shopping, worked well. Companies decided to cut this because it was too many people to be paid...and apparently, they think the ill will generated by a receipt-checking policy is offset by the savings of having fewer people deterring theft.

Buddy, lemme tell ya, if I'm gonna steal, I'm not putting stolen items in a bag, and I sure as hell will not be stopped by a granny at the door. Maybe I have more balls than most...maybe not.

Cost. I'm fucking broke right now. I have done the price comparison on kitty litter and food (and most items I buy regularly) between HT, target, and Kroger - the three stores I shop at most. If target had been open, I'd have gone there. They close at ten; I got off work at ten.

[Edited on September 30, 2008 at 1:23 AM. Reason : ldjkf]

Also, wal-mart had WAAAAAAY more brands of kitty litter than HT or kroger, but I didn't know this ahead of time.

my thought is that they've done the math and the multibillion dollar company thinks that the greeter works better in the long run either because...

1) hiring and maintaining a worthwhile staff is costly
2) the greeter prevents similar or more theft than people meandering about do
3) some combination of the two

I'm thinking it's #4: they're so massive they can easily afford to drive away customers...and have a bunch of other factors working to keep them as the retailer of choice for many americans.

yes, but independent of the other 3 choices, that wouldnt make much sense either. they'd likely just drop the greeter altogether. losing stuff through theft and stuff through driving business away is somewhat comparable.

again, i bet they've done the math.

I am completely amazed at how serious this is for some people. It's a receipt. They only check if you have something that is not bagged. For example, a TV, piece of furniture, and yes.. a bag of kitty litter. Everyone that has been alive for more than 10 years in this country knows this. Been the same for a long time. So you know what I do if I make one of these purchases? I keep the receipt in my hand. No hassle. Four seconds and I'm on my way to the car. How high-strung do you have to be when showing someone a receipt gets you this worked up? Get over yourselves. Really. Life is too fucking short to waste time bickering over something completely harmless. So rather than spend 3-6 seconds showing a receipt, you spend a minute or more arguing with someone who's just doing their job. I'm sure Wal-Mart's revenues and stock price will drop thanks to your "statement." You won.

I used to work in a Wal-Mart in high school and I saw this method deter theft. People would be trying to walk out with stuff and when they get asked for a receipt, they'd do the whole "pat down the pockets and act like you just lost it" thing and then walk away. Amazingly, they'd leave shortly after with nothing in their hands. Does it work for everything? No. But it's can be a deterrant... and that's their goal in the first place.

Dude. I never said it was serious, that I thought I was making a difference, sticking it to the man, or winning. I elected to not show my receipt because I didn't want to. (Which does beg the question: why didn't I? Because I don't consider it a reasonable request. Many people differ, but it's my opinion, and my prerogative. You have clearly decided you don't mind showing your receipt. That's fine, and you're welcome to make that decision. I have made the opposite choice, and as far as I'm concerned, that's that. I'm not trying to convince you to stop showing your receipt)

And FYI, I didn't know Wal-mart checked receipts until earlier this year

It used to annoy the shit out of me that Wal-mart would do that, especially since they only seemed to ask when my hands were obviously full.

If they were smart they would slap "thank you" stickers on items like kitty litter so you can easily see it's been paid for. I know supermarkets do this so I don't understand why Wal-mart can't.

THAT'S THE BEST PART ABOUT THIS THREAD, THAT'S THE RETARD THAT WAS COMPLAINING ABOUT PEOPLE NOT WANTING TO SHOW A "BLUE HAIR" THEIR RECEIPT.

I GUESS HE'S JUST PISSED OFF THAT HE DIDN'T SHOW SOME RANDOM "BLUE HAIR" HIS RECEIPT AND THEN HE GOT ARRESTED FOR IT. I'D HAVE TAKEN THAT A LOT FURTHER THAN HE DID. WITH NO PROOF OR EVEN ANY SUSPICION OF THEFT, YOU'D BETTER FUCKING BELIEVE THERE WOULD BE A PROBLEM IF I'D BEEN ARRESTED FOR SUCH A STUPID THING.

WITH ALL THAT BEING SAID, THERE'S STILL NOT A GOD DAMNED REASON TO SHOW THE "BLUE HAIR" YOUR RECEIPT.
