Basically yeah.
In 3 months, I've spent over 1500 on a shelter dog. So be ready.
I work at Banfield in Cary and almost all the pet bills are around 80--if you're just getting flea and heartworm stuff it can be about 100. So it's an expensive thing. And it will NEVER work out the way you want it. The dog/puppy will not obey your every whim and you WILL get frustrated. You won't be able to stay out overly late at the beginning or even until the 8 month mark, you'll have to make arrangements and constantly figure your pet into your day. If you can't spend time with them each day, then don't bother--behavioral stuff can develop. Pure breeds do have more issues that's for sure, and think--you'll have the pet for at least 10 years if you keep it healthy. Dental stuff happens around 3 years, and if you're not on a preventative care plan or something that can be 100s. Food is about 40 a month, then there's bones and toys, flea/heartworm is about 25 a month depending on where you get it, etc.

Training is REQUIRED. You can do it yourself though if you put in the time. When you get a puppy, you have to watch them like a hawk at the start. Peeing inside WILL happen, submissive peeing or excitement peeing as well. They'll jump up on you, they'll bark at random shit, etc etc.

Basically, there is no "low maintenance dog" in the sense that you will get the dog and it'll be easy. You get a cat, show it where you feed it and where it poops and you're golden. But dogs, they're like children. Harder even because they don't know what you're saying and you can't explain to them all the stuff you do for them.
BUT they do give you a lot of love, they brighten your day, they are wonderful companions, and you'll have a great friend for 10+ years so long as you put the time, effort and love into the relationship. Nip problems in the bud and you'll do fine. Have the money and be prepared to spend it lol.

Good luck if you go through! In my opinion, mutts are the best because they end up being the healthiest and have great temperaments. Definitely adopt if you can

someone dumped her on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere, as they often do around these parts (i live in a REALLY rural area)...and it happened to be her lucky day, as i was just on my way back from looking for a dog at the "local" no-kill shelter.

awesome dog stories. i'm considering a good with a really great color like a blue or like a deep grey or something really unique. i girl i dated had a tiger stripped pit bull, which was awesome, but he grew large and was overly excited. i ended up sort of ditching her because of the annoyance of visiting and having this huge pitbull want to play and bite your ankles all the time.


i'd plan on getting a good breed and invesiting the money for getting a professional dog trainer and even working with it. i see both the upside and downsite potential, but i think it could work.

i've had cats before and they were cool and tame, but those fuckers could occassionally do shit that would enrage me. overall cats are good though. i think trying a dog would be cool for my social life. especially since i walk about 2 miles a day . . . and oftentimes I jog. i don't work a 9-5 job . . . so i generally have lots of free time.
