EEE901 for me, mainly because the small keyboard really doesn't bother me at all after a week or two adjusting and the 1" smaller screen still has the same max resolution, and the size/weight difference between 901 and 1000 makes enough of a difference imo.

The best buy at Southpoint had the two asus models side by side, and I don't think I could use the 9 inch one. It seems to make way too much of a difference in the keyboard size. The 10 inch one still feels somewhat normal.

fuck i almost impulse bought one too

i started off looking at the MSI Wind for like $350 and was like yeah i can afford that, shit

then i started comparing models and got myself up to the EeePC 1000 and then eventually up to $450 with the IdeaPad S10

i was reading reviews and so close to buying when i realized, FUCK $450?! I can get a full laptop for that much, not just a netbook...what the fuck am i doing...

momma dukes wants a 300-400 dollar laptop but doesn't want one of these. I only ever use this Compaq C714NR (15.4", 1.46GHz core duo, 1GB, 120GB) for work and though it's not massively heavy, i'm definitely looking for portability. Since I got in on this crazy best buy deal last year and paid ~300 for this, I'm considering giving it to her and picking up one of these things.

Thoughts? How frustrated will I get with the atom processor for daily computing? I do sometimes lay in bed and watch/stream xvid/hulu. Will this now be impossible?

interesting... i have an Eee PC 1000HD, and i can't say that i agree with the complaint about the lcd's crispness or brightness. i've used this guy for a month now, and the screen on it seems as comfortable as the one on my 2.5-yr old MacBook Pro.

that said, the scrolling on a *x600 screen sucks. but depending on what you're doing, it might not be too much of a problem. most of my life has been converted to online-centric storage and apps, so i'm not finding as much of a need for screen real estate. this is, after all, meant to be my portable machine, not a full laptop replacement.

i didn't get any mixed reviews on SSD vs HDD - all the places i read said they sucked at the moment so i went for the HDD version of mine.

yeah, but even using gmail with labels, gchat and calendar in the left side would make me need to scroll forever, not even including rememberthemilk module

i was spoiled with an ibm laptop with a high res screen and now everything else sucks
i can deal with the current line of cheap laptops but *x600 is unbearable

and i don't see myself switching devices between a laptop and netbook based on what i need to do that day. i'd either have one or the other, not both. i wouldn't say hey i'm going to starbucks lemme take my netbook and then say hey let me take my laptop to work with me - it would just be too much extra care for not enough return. a 14.1" laptop is pretty portable anyways if you don't accessorize it with all the crap you can possibly think of attaching with a laptop through USB and yada yada yada - i just take my laptop, power cable, and an external 2.5" hard drive that i keep synced with my desktop and mail and all that. lightweight and simple. and with the portable hard drive (or even my USB stick on my keys) i can really work from any computer so if i don't even want to take my laptop i don't have to.

Ok, I just got off the phone with my 'rents. I have a $450 limit if its going to be used "for school"

10-12" models only.

Has anyone handled the different models that can give me an anecdotal comparison between two or more?

SSD doesn't matter to me, but 6-cell does.

I have an extra XP CD-Key, so windows-installed isn't really a deal breaker.

Also, which one has the greatest potential for ram/hdd upgradeability?
