I just read War As They Knew It (which focuses on Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler), and lemme tell you, this is one of those special rivalries that is fun to watch no matter what. The rivalry was so intense that both Woody and Bo would practice practially year around for their big game. Woody would practice Monday-Wednesday on Michigan before they even focused on their weekly opponent, while Bo would run certain plays in practice all season which were geared specifically for the Ohio State game.
It's hard to label one rivalry as "the best" but it is equal to Bama/Auburn, Army/Navy, and Texas/OU. 11/16/2008 7:46:04 PM |

^^the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry stands out to me among other college football rivalries because with the exception of the last few years under Jim Tressel, the underdog in this game always played their best football of the year and was always a threat to ruin the other team's hope of a national championship season. As much as I despise Big-10 football, it's hard to not give this rivalry it's credit.
I'd still rank yankees-red sox and duke - UNC as being bigger rivalries from the amount of people who truly care, but the only rivalry in sports where the two opponents truly hate each other as much as Ohio State and Michigan fans and players do is the Muhammed Ali -Joe Frazier legacy.

^ and Auburn/Alabama.
I would have Michigan/Ohio State up there, the only thing against it is that for most of the mid 80s to mid 90s when both teams werent that great (as in national champ. level) it didnt seem like that big of a game nationally (I am sure it still was in Michigan/Ohio).
This happens to be the time when I was first really getting into college football. Hell, I remember when Tennessee played Ohio State in a bowl game in 97ish, it wasnt even a big deal at all, Ohio State was viewed as a good but not great matchup. So I realize that it was big before the 80s but it didnt seem to get really big again nationally until Tressel came along (since Cooper always got his ass kicked); but it doesnt seem like Auburn/Bama ever loses that, no matter what the team's records are.

the rivalry obviously means different things to different people
I think that the OSU/UM rivalry is the best in sports, followed by Duke/UNC and Yankees/Red Sox, the Auburn/Bama rivalry isnt even on my radar. I would expect an sec fan to think that the teams they follow the closest to have the bigger rivalry
I love how this same thread and argument is made every year 11/16/2008 8:58:35 PM |

^^^ but what I was saying is that its still been a huge game, even with Auburn dominating lately. Growing up in the 80s Michigan/Ohio State didnt seem like as big as a deal as it used to be 11/16/2008 9:35:36 PM |

UM / OSU is definitely THE rivalry. Maybe RRod can redeem himself in his first season? If UM wins all of the rivalry haters will really understand the meaning of the rivalry. Anything could happen!
That being said, it doesn't seem likely UM will keep this close unless they play insano & get incredibly lucky.
Pretty hilarious that NCSU could probably beat UM this year.... first year I can remember where that is the case. 11/16/2008 9:40:43 PM |

I feel I'm pretty unbiased but I like the Iron Bowl more... those teams and fans fucking HATE each other and don't try to hide it...
Michigan/Ohio State is good, don't get me wrong.
And I'm not going to compare it to Yanks/Sox or Duke/UNC because I've spent large parts of my life right smack in the middle of those rivalry's so to me they are larger than life... 11/16/2008 9:43:41 PM |

I wonder if its a geography thing or an age thing... I am thinking age. During my formative years in watching college football Auburn/Bama was the game, with Bo Jackson, Shula, Van Tiffin's long ass kick, the 1992 Bama team, 1994 game where they were like #2 and #5 in the polls, Stallings etc. However, most of you are 19-24 so your formative years were later on, late 90s, early 2000s
^ yeah, not even close with me, definitely Iron Bowl, but then again I grew up with my dad (Bama) telling me all these stories of how much they hated each other. Michigan/Ohio State was a decent game, but on par with USC/ND, Florida/UGA, etc.

Me as a 23 year old who has lived in Charlotte since I was 7
Michigan/OSU>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Auburn/Alabama
Not personally, as I don't have a preference for any of those 4 teams
but just the general vibe of relative importance of the games I've gotten from national and local media over the years
I've never seen the Iron Bowl hyped as THAT big of a deal while Michigan/OSU was always compared to Duke/UNC 11/16/2008 10:00:24 PM |

some statistic info for perspective:
UM vs OSU: Series: Michigan leads, 57-41-6 Since 1935, Ohio State and Michigan have decided the Big Ten Conference championship between themselves on 23 different occasions, and have affected the determination of the conference title an additional 23 times. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michigan-Ohio_State_rivalry
BAMA vs AUB: All-time series Alabama leads, 38–33–1 Alabama leads the series in Birmingham (34-18-1). Auburn leads the series in Tuscaloosa (6-0-0) and Auburn (7-2-0). The series is tied in Montgomery (2-2-0). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Bowl
UM/OSU have played 104 times to the Iron Bowl's 72 times, a whopping 32 game difference. I'm obviously more familiar with UM/OSU, and I know how many times the game has had a serious impact on national championship/bowl consideration. I'd be curious to compare those situations with the Iron Bowl and see which rivalry has more spoiler type games.
The level of hatred between the two rivalries will be harder to compare I think.... 11/16/2008 10:05:10 PM |

sort of... I was raised as far north in Tennessee as you can go, right on the Kentucky border so we were just as close to parts of Ohio, Illinois, Missouri etc. as we were Alabama, Georgia, etc. and it was a military town, so people liked all sorts of teams.
