So there's a kids.woot now.

http://kids.woot.com/

I don't want a leapfrog system, but I can imagine cool stuff popping up every once in a while.

what do we think of today's Gateway DX4200-09 1.8GHz Quad-Core 4GB DDR2 640GB SATA HDMI Vista Home Premium?

I desperately need a new PC and I can afford this one I'm not so sure about gateway, though it has to be better than my current dead one.

I'm leaning towards no, but it's so tempting

nice enough, but no DVI out.

i know this is a desktop, but i recently bought a gateway laptop and it runs like a champ. i was surprised by the lack of installed bullshit programs it came with.

i looked at the comments and saw that a lot of cats are saying it's not eligible for windows 7, if that appeals to you

it has HDMI out, though, so a simple and cheap converter/cable will give you digital video if your monitor doesn't have an HDMI port (which a lot do, these days)

that's not a bad price, i don't think...the hard drive is nice (i 320gbx2 platter drives) and it comes with 4gb of memory...the onboard graphics are a joke for anything except basic use (i don't think it'll handle anything better than 720p video), but it DOES come with a PCIe x16 slot so it's easy and cheap enough to upgrade to something slightly better (though you might need to upgrade the power supply, depending on what you get)...it also has an x1 PCIe and a free PCI slot

the 9100e proc is an AM2+ socket, so upgrading should be pretty easy/cheap in the future, too

i'd say go for it

barely missed the edit

read the comments regarding this woot...there are definitely some anti-gateway people in there and some of what they say is valid (for example, this is by far one of the worst processors AMD ever released...it's underpowered and uses more energy than it should for what it gives you...but it runs pretty cool and will be more than adequate for almost everything except hardcore gaming)...but overall, the computer seems pretty good for the price...supposedly the integrated graphics will run HD content (not sure about 1080p, but it looks like it's possible)...for $100 down the road you could upgrade it pretty easily (though it'll never be some awesome hardcore gaming rig)

a few of the comments lead me to believe that this computer will qualify for the free win7 upgrade, so even though they don't mention it, you might get to put win7 on it, which will be much better at utilizing the available hardware than vista is

See, the gaming thing is something that I'm torn on.

I don't want to spend the big bucks for a gaming PC, but I want something that can run the latest games (I already know that Bioshock 2 is going to eat my soul).

^ Aaron told me not to get it

aha! Looks like buying a metric shit ton of stuff from woot is paying off. or not.

Quote :
"Dear xxxx, who has bought a whole lot of stuff from Woot -

We've gotten Deals.Woot, our community-based deals site, into good enough shape that we'd like to let a few of you in to kick the tires and help us polish it up.

Head over to http://deals.woot.com and check it out. It's different than our other Woot sites, so you'll probably have a few questions. One note: we're serious about it being a beta, you'll likely find some bugs, we'll be tweaking features and the design, and we may clear out all the data a few times.

We've got a lot of work to do on our end, so thanks for your help in getting this off the ground,

- Deals.Woot dev team

P.S. Once things are in a little better shape, we'll probably expand the beta to other wooters. "

Anybody else in on the beta?

There is maybe one item since the woot-off I would consider buying, and that's without knowing the price.

But have fun with your spy robots and FM tuners.

Heh. The Christmas BOC was awesome this year. Right at midnight they put up a fake page to the BOC that wouldn't let you buy it. After clicking through to the sold out page, if you read the description it provided a link to the real page you needed to go to to buy the BOC. I managed to get one, but it's awesome how many tards just gave up after seeing the sold out thing at 12:00:01. The first 7 pages of the discussion forum are people whining about how shitty the site is. While the few people that have half a brain were busy buying their crap.
