Nope havent found a place yet. My job provided me with a list of apartments in the short pump area. I'm going hunting sometime this month.

I checked out a few places around Short Pump and along 64:

Legacy at Mayland - meh, older, funny smell, bad parking
Trails at Short Pump - nicer, and you can walk to West Broad village
Gayton point townhomes - really nice and also really $$$
Hermitage Manor townhomes - cheaper than ^, still pretty nice but further from short pump area

Thats what I was thinking judging from the websites of the apartment complexes in Midlothian. Do you think it would be better to rent a apartment in Midlothian or are there plenty of houses for rent there? I'm looking for a small house, townhouse, or apartment.

^ we found our rental house on craigslist. For what it's worth, the leasing agency is the best i've ever dealt with as a tenant-- i never felt like they were trying their best to shit on us, but then again the last time i rented prior to this, I was a college kid...

My aunt & cousins live in Midlothian. It's a nice area--little more suburban than I was looking for, but it's convenient to the city and looks like a good place to live. They've been happy with it (as my cousins grew up and got married, one stayed in Midlothian and another moved to Chesterfield, which is the next town over). My aunt is in Brandermill, which is one of the older neighborhoods in the southern part of town, but still a nice place--not sure if there are any apartments in that development but I think there are at least some townhomes (not likely to find small single-family houses there, most of them are 2000+ sq ft). Woodlake is in the same part of town and also could be an option.

Like Cary, Midlothian is quite spread out. We rented our house in the Brandermill area, which is about 15 miles from central richmond. Woodlake is a few miles further out.

Both brandermill and woodlake are on the swift creek reservoir, which is a lot like jordan lake, except you cant take anything more fun than a pontoon out on the water.

The house we bought is in the part of midlothian that's about as close to richmond as you can get without being in richmond, so you get proximity to downtown/carytown/the fan, while still having the benefits of the burbs (which for us is the schools)

like richtofen, i know dick about apartments in the area. rental houses seem to command a higher premium than the triangle. We're paying $1895/month for a 2400 sq foot house. The same house in the triangle in a similar location wouldn't rent for more than 1200/month. I suspect the housing downturn has created a higher demand for rental houses. No idea if apartments are in the same boat though.

I think that's just Virginia in general. When I moved up here, I was surprised about how high rent was all over the place. I'm sure the housing market just exacerbates it.

Also, the Town of Ashland is a pretty nice place if you're looking at the Burbs. Bonus: you'll be going against I-95 traffic so the commute should be painless.

I went to richmond last weekend. Apartments were $$$ I think I'mma stay at The hamptons at Hunton Park. Really nice, kinda expensive. I'd rather overpay and have a nice safe place. Hood life aint cool

Dude. The majority of the West End all the way out to short pump is "not in the hood". Stay in that vicinity and you should be able to find something without too much issue. Rent here is higher than in the triangle but it's not NYC, 1k max budget for one person should be plenty.

My sister has lived up there since 2010. I go up and see her once, or twice a year. There are a lot of nice micro breweries. Also, if you want to see a cool museum in the general area then check out "Keystone Truck and Tractor Museum." I haven't eaten at the bbq restaurant at the museum yet, but the museum itself is cool if you like antique cars/semis/tractors/random items. I think the price to enter is around $8 to $10 dollars. And go see a NASCAR race. That is always fun! If you do that just know that the track parking lots are free to park in. Don't waste your time paying $20 to park in someone's front yard.

I've been hearing a ton of great things about Richmond lately. I always thought it was dumpy just based on my drive through to DC but have had people raving about the food scene, breweries, and bars. Somebody said Vale is the best brewery in the US?

Yes the brewery scene is awesome. So is the history/museum scene. It's a very historic town. Another nice thing about it is they have an airport that is smaller than RDU. My sister lives up there and says it is a nice airport that is easy to get in and out of. It's nothing like Chicago, or Atlanta.

I like it so far, it’s a lot greener than Colorado and I’m digging all the trees. I have not been downtown or really explored the city, short limo is this weird little area where everything you need is in about a 2 mile span, it reminds me of north hills in Raleigh kind of. Definitely going to check out some breweries!

That was all i knew about it before moving here as well. It's a lot like Durham in that it's an old mid-size city with an urban feel that's rough around the edges, but has a great food and arts scene. having a major river cut through the city is awesome. I think it's the only city in the US with class 4 rapids within city limits.

The Veil is definitely one of the hypest breweries in the country. The owner, Matt Tarpey has a pedegree earned by being a brewer at the Alchemist, Hill Farmstead, and Cantillon. They make some absolutely fantastic beers, but I don't know that i'd say they're the best in the US. They're not even my favorite in Richmond. But the beer mostly lives up to the hype.

When I moved here there were two breweries. Having already been spoiled by a good beer scene in the triangle, I was a little miffed about it. But as of a couple months ago there are 36.

Food scene is great. A lot of chefs in the DC area who can't afford to open their own place in DC head down to Richmond where the barrier to entry is much lower.

The airport is nice, but being a small airport, there are few direct flights to anywhere that aren't already hubs, and flights are generally 15-20% more to the same destinations than they are from Raleigh. If i'm flying internationally, it's sometimes 50% more, which then justifies driving two hours and flying out of IAD.

Overall, there's a hell of a lot more to do in Richmond than the triangle, but I still don't have anywhere near the close circle of friends that I still have in Raleigh, and if i ever got laid off, this area is definitely a tech wasteland. Financial services, law, healthcare are strong though.
