from marquette board

Quote :
"Memories of MU vs. NCState game in '74
MU was very lucky to get to the Final Four...before seeding in '79 or '80, MU was placed regions...where you had to play the top teams in your region...usually the Mid East Region..that is why MU and Kentucky have played the most NCAA games in history...in the '50s and '60s...MU had to escape UK's bracket to get to the Final Four..

In '74, MU was placed in the Mid West bracket but it had to beat the one team that it could not matchup with...ND...with Dantley, Shumate, Brokaw, just a great team...but they were upset by Campy Russell's Mich team...and MU was able to beat Mich to get to the 4.

MU played Kansas and beat them handily...no one remembers it because undefeated NCSTate played Walton’s bunch the 2 loss UCLA dynasty that had not lost an NCAA tourney game in at least 10yrs... Walton, Wilkes, Lee, Bibby, Curtis, Meyers, vs. 7-4 Tom Burleson...6-4 David Thompson [48 " vert jump]...Mo Rivers, Stoddard [later became Balt Pitcher] and 5-5 Monte Towe...NCST won the game in 2OT overcoming an 8 pt deficit...'That game ruined my life." said Bill Walton who earlier said of their loss at ND in Jan '74 which ended their 88 game winning streak." Digger Phelps ruined my life.' ...so Bill’s life has been a struggle ever since '74...

Al did not think MU had a chance to beat this mega NCST team in the finals...but looking back on it...MU did have a great shot...MU had Maurice Lucas at C, BO Ellis at PF[Bo had his best yr as a Freshman teaming with Lucas], Earl Tatum at SF, 2G Marcus Washington...and PG Lloyd Walton...

NCST was coming off its huge win on Sat vs. UCLA...and was ready for a let down...

The problem...the game was being played in Greensboro, NC so it was a home crowd for NCST...

Also, David Thompson was the best player in basketball not named Bill Walton...he had a 48" jump...in today's terms...that would mean a player in D-1 with a 70" vertical jump...he was a generation ahead of his time...in terms of ability...

MU started off well... it was close...about 30-29....when NCST stole the ball...and as Rivers tried for a lay in...Bo Ellis made an unreal block from behind below the rim and the ref called goal tending...McGuire went nuts and was given a technical...about a minute later a Marquette drive and lay in was wiped away after a flop....and McGuire charged the ref on the court...he was given T#2...but coaches were not thrown out then ...NCST hit the FTs...and went out to a 10 point lead that they kept for the entire game...
Marquette had an unbelievably quick 2-2-1 full court trapping defense that was the bread and butter of the team….Walton and Tatum on the front line…speed and quickness…MU was able to generate pts off of this defense…but not vs NCSTATE….I never knew why until I worked at Rick Majerus’ basketball camps a few yrs later…and I heard him lecture about top PG play and how to beat a trapping press like the 2-2-1 MU utilized so successfully.

Said Rick, “The key to breaking a trapping press is to do what Monte Towe did to us in the ’74 title game. He did something I had never seen before. He dribbled into our trap and when we sprung it, Towe kept his dribble and dribbled backwards where he had come from…with our front line our of position after committing on the trap…and our back 3 guys already committed to zone guarding the back cutters, Towe would make a crisp pass to the open cutter and they beat our press every time…We were really counting on that press to give the 5-5 Towe some problems. But it did not. Towe was one of the top PGs we had ever faced.”
Al blew the national championship game...it would have been hard...but MU could have beaten NCState....but this game was forgotten when Al won the final game in '77...but this game...and the game vs. Ind in '76 when Al blew the game with a late T....and the Kansas State game on St Patrick's Day in March, '77 when MU fell behind by 14 but turned the tide....cut it to 7 and Al sensing that KState was choking grabbed his neck tie to signal the choke to his team and the refs thought he meant that the refs were choking so they T'd him up...and KS made the FTs and went ahead by 10...AL sat down and told Hank..."If we lose this game...I am done in Milwaukee."

Luckily for Al, MU came back and won by 1....and MU beat Wake Forest...UNCC and then NC for the national title...

I'm psyched for the game, but please stop 'reminiscing' about the '74 game

Maybe 2-3 people on here at most were alive for that game, and I'm sure they don't even remember it

There's history, there's ancient history, and then there's 1974

IF YOU WEREN'T ALIVE IN 74 THEN THAT GAME NEVER HAPPENED!!

Why wouldn't people want to remember a time when we used to actually win games?

I hope we get some positive media attention, its also a chance to make a statement on national television (minus comcast folk).

Hopefully we don't make a negative statement and get blown out

This is a game that a great coach could win for us. It's all about matchups and pushing the right button. We have a size advantage at almost every position and we need to exploit that.

Unless our backcourt completely spits up on themselves, we should keep it close. Hopefully the crowd is good tonight... that will give our guys a lift.

Can't imagine the game will be a sell-out- any way to confirm non-student ticket availability? gopack doesn't seem to show anything.

Apparently, the ticket system thing isn't letting anyone request tickets now, and then I heard it said it was unavailable. Soooo, not sure what's going on b/c I KNOW there are tickets available. RALEIGH IS DEAD (student-wise), so there shouldn't be an issue.

On your feet, everyone!

Quote :
"Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's RED glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the WOLF-PACK"

its obvious that we're going to need our quickest/most athletic lineup in there for most of the game, can't let these guys have an open look at some jumpshots

this is hilarious. Ferguson is +- 0 as far as good plays vs bad plays because they are running at him on every single play.

Degand looks fucking scared against this zone. So does cj williams. Mays looks oddly calm and is doing what he should do. He just got some bullshit calls against him
