I've never been hunting (never had the opportunity) but I would like to someday.

a 12 ga is the perfect gun to start with. my old one comes with a smooth bore slug barrel, then you can deer hunt too.

Deer is what I would really like to hunt. Especially since i've never had deer meat

I was supposed to do big game hunting with my friend this year before boot camp but that never happened

I dunno, I really love m4's and that stock is really similar. What do you reckon the price difference would be with the same gun, standard stock?

12 ga mossberg 500 28" bbl standard length magazine, wood stocks can easily be found used for $150-$200

[Edited on December 21, 2008 at 1:48 AM. Reason : closer to the lower end of that range too]

I would like to keep the 18.5" barrel length; if I started hunting i'd get another gun because I like wasting money.

[Edited on December 21, 2008 at 1:50 AM. Reason : and you could just buy a second barrel and switch them out when you go hunting]

I know there's about a .01% chance of me having to use it for any sort of defense purposes, but if I do, the 18.5" would be easier to maneuver in close/tight quarters.

gonna start looking. I'll debate the stock and barrel length. I'm tempted to get the adjustable stock just because it isn't that much more expensive and i'm partially buying this gun as a collector. I do greatly appreciate your input though. This has probably been one of maybe 3 threads i've ever made that made it to 2 pages of actual constructive conversation

there's nothing collector about a tactical 500. like i said, they're very common. but it's whatever makes your dick grow man.

yeah, and that's not a bad reason to get it. you think it's cool. it makes you feel good. i say go for it.

i just want you to make a fully informed decision

also, you can hunt with that telescopic stock on it

[Edited on December 21, 2008 at 2:11 AM. Reason : hell, really you could just get a tactical and a long bbl and hunt with pistol grips]

[Edited on December 21, 2008 at 2:12 AM. Reason : lot of turkey hunters and some duck hunters are going to pistol grips on the rear now]

I wish I had enough spare cash to get an M4.. my uncle has an M4 with modified receiver to take the .762x39 and all the goodies (flashlight, reflex sight, etc). It's like pure sex when I hold and shoot that gun.

i don't really get into all that shit.

my arsenal will only consist of long guns for hunting, a shotgun beside the bed, and a CC-able handgun

oh, and a .22 for plinking, but i also squirrel hunt with it

i just don't get off on shooting fancy rifles. to each his own.

I can understand his reason. He's a retired green beret so most of his guns are war trophies. He still trains special forces, swat teams, and other groups on the side. He partially has to stay up on new technology and partially just loves the stuff.

WTF.

The wal-mart near me doesn't sell shotguns. They sell ammo, but no shotguns.

They also didn't have any .45ACP ammo. They had one box of expensive stuff but no plinking ammo. They did have a 250ct box of .40 and tons of other stuff but no .45

i have a 500, and I like it...

i want to get the tactical stock for it though- right now it is just the pistol grip

you can get them for under 300 new if you look around (Jim's gun shop is where I got mine)

most walmarts stopped selling firearms because it wasn't practical for them. There are a few that still do, but those were deemed high interest areas. They did that because they had to have FFL's at every store, and it wasn't worth the money to keep selling them at all of them.

I've hunted with a Remington 870 for a few years. It's been quite a good gun. No complaints. Don't remember what I paid for it, but it hasn't let me down. Also, my dad has been hunting for over 30 years and he loves his 870 Wingmaster as well as his Mossberg. Both companies make good guns for hunting!

If you're going to deer hunt with the shotgun, you probably don't need to get fancy/expensive. Of course, this does depend on your hunting style: we man-drive when we hunt, so there's no point getting fancier than necessary. Still-hunters may require more advanced equipment. I dunno exactly what...

Mossberg 500 if you are a lefty no question (ambi safety and slide release)

oh yeah and get a STOCK (pistol grip 'okay' as long as it has a real stock)...

keep in mind that if you shoot someone the DA might end up showing the gun to a jury of your peers, in that case, tactical = red meat for the DA.

lolz. .50 would hurt someone.

I'm sure my .40 with hollow points will get the job done. If not one round, then 11 more should do the trick

i just purchased a rem. 870 at walmart. 28" barrel and i am very happy with the purchase

hope to buy an 18" barrel for "home defense" soon

barrel change takes less than 20 seconds i would estimate(i saw someone earlier say 5 minutes, i thought)

nice. I need to find some ammo online. Gun ranges are way too expensive.

I might look into reloading my own range rounds

I heard someone say that the price savings of reloading your own ammo aren't as good as they used to be.
