I'm leaving Winston saturday morning to arrive saturday night (assuming some crazy traffic situation doesn't get us stuck), and we're leaving dc late at night tuesday night. Like, midnight or 1 am, to TRY and avoid traffic. 1/15/2009 1:02:05 PM |

I'd love to go to the inauguration
however, I have an extreme hatred of both crowds and cold weather
so I'll be watching it at home 1/15/2009 1:19:33 PM |

I am thinking about biking into the inauguration. Right now, it's just an idea because I'm not sure if I want to do this, especially in the numbing cold, but it's still a possibility.
I have a place to stay in Arlington, could hop on the paved trails all the way down to the Memorial Bridge (which will be closed to all cars), then utilize the free bike valet (http://www.waba.org/events/inauguralbikevalet.php) that will be set up. It's about a 7 mile ride from where I would be staying to the valet station. Quick, easy ride.
What do people think the traffic will be like coming into the DC area (from the South) on Sunday/Monday?

what exactly do you need a ticket for or to? Are there not general admission areas/zones?
I really just want to be part of a ridiculous mass of people celebrating history. I don't have to be up Barack's bunghole to watch him get sworn in. Like, to get to stand on the Mall, do you need a ticket? 1/16/2009 9:29:08 AM |

link to a map of the Parade, but it shows where non-ticketed public can watch the swearing in...
shows where the general public can watch beyond the ticketing seating. I saw them setting up on Wednesday, and there are going to be jumbotrons almost all the way down to the Lincoln Memorial....
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/inauguration-watch/2009/01/georgetown_metro_connection_bu.html
^ There's a connector that runs between Rosslyn and Georgetown. It's apparently able to run across chain bridge. From what I understand, there's going to be a shuttle from Georgetown to the Mall. That looks like a good idea on what to do...

i just checked the wmata website, and i'm pretty sure they're just offering a special ticket for that day as a souvenir. go to their website and you can get more info.
