No kidding. Fuck extraneous packaging.

I wish.
I cancelled recycling because they always left it. Found out why: paper. They claim they get fined if they bring paper for recycling

and then if you try to get 2 bins to separate you have to pay for the second one. and then when you do, they still dump it all into the same truck. i don't get it.

We have Thursday recycling collection, but for some odd reason, they didn't pick it up today.

Jamestown, NC is all fucked up. You have to pay for garbage collection, and they only collect every other Thursday. Your newspaper has to be in paper bags. These fuckers, the recycling and regular, pick up all the time. Any holiday, anything, they're working. But they didn't show up today, and most of the neighborhood has no idea why. Pwned! >.<

On the contrary, idiots like you should have to pay more for not recycling.

Don't think for a second that you or other non- or anti-recyclers have even one fucking leg to stand on.
Get a damn clue. Nothing pisses off "good" people more than irresponsible fucks like you. With democrats in most offices, prepare to be owned. (I'm a libertarian, but I'll welcome anything liberals do to punish those that don't recycle and/or reward those that do.)

You know, the trend is for cities to equip trash and recycling trucks with automatic scales.
This way, the weights of the trash and recycling for each location is measured. (and fraud enforced.)
The more your trash weighs, the more you pay. The more your recycling weight, the less you pay.

(I think I'll write a letter.)

"Beginning on January 1, 2009 our recycling crews no longer sort materials into separate compartments on the trucks . All sorting is done by the City's contractor, Sonoco Recycling, Inc. This is called single stream recycling. Further, many of the trucks in the City's fleet are being switched over from the traditional style recycling truck to a rear loader truck. Many residents will recognize these rear loading trucks as the same type of vehicle that has been used to collect their garbage and yard waste. "

Willy Nilly,
I live outside Raleigh. One has to pay for trash pickup in unincorporated Wake Co. zorthage went with Waste Industries, who uses Raleigh disposal facilities. I called, asked why they weren't picking it up, they told me, and I hung up. About ten minutes later, I called, spoke to a different person, asked where they take their waste, and then said 'so I can recycle newspapers and white paper, right?' and the chick told me no. So I told her to cancel our recycling program, since I won't stop recycling because some dumbass is being lazy, or their company is being cheap.
I just drive 4 or 5 miles down Old Stage whenever recycling needs to be taken. And since I've begun doing that, we recycling a LOT more, since we don't have to make one or two bins hold a week's recycling. I empty the trash now less than once a week. Most everything gets recycled.
I like the way it's done in some european countries, and hiddenite, NC: you pay for trash, but get a credit for recycling. It's all based on weight.

You and parsonsb should get together. He claims that plastics that are recycled aren't really reused, and that by not recycling paper, one is helping to keep demand for paper up, which means that as more trees are felled, just as many are planted, so not recycling paper is a bigger favor to the environment, especially after you account for the chemicals used in recycling paper

[Edited on January 24, 2009 at 12:42 PM. Reason : parsonbs is also appropriate]

Quote :
"All Things Considered, December 22, 2008 · At Paper Fiber Americas, a wastepaper exporter in Portland, Ore., tons of cans, beer boxes, newsprint and plastic jugs form a huge mountain of recycling. John Dryden, who runs the exporting operation, says when he looks at the large pile of trash, he normally sees money.

But recently, Dryden's business has been transformed by countless consumers who are opting to buy less. Those small, individual choices to hold off on certain purchases put fewer boxes under their Christmas trees and mean there's less cardboard and paper to recycle.

The Healthy Recycling System

Here's how it normally works: You put your recycling out on the curb or take it to the recycling center. Someone picks it up and brings it to a sorting center where all the cardboard and newsprint gets separated and baled up. Dryden then buys the recyclable material and sells it to China and other parts of Asia.

"China does not have an indigenous source of fiber supply," Dryden says, "so they have to import recycled paper. And they use that to make new boxes and those boxes can go to package goods that are exported to the U.S. and Europe."

The past couple of years have been incredibly good to wastepaper exporters. Demand from Asia is huge, and speaking just in terms of volume, wastepaper is one of America's top exports.

All summer, business was going well for Dryden. Then, in October, he got a call from his sales team in China with a warning: Hundreds of containers were arriving there full of wastepaper, and no one was picking them up.

"At the time I heard that, I was a little skeptical because we hadn't seen that kind of activity before," Dryden says. "But several weeks later, we started seeing it with virtually every customer."

That means customers in China had ordered wastepaper from Dryden's company, but when it arrived, they declined it. Bales and bales of abandoned cardboard and newsprint were sitting at Chinese ports as prices — which were high from July until October — dropped precipitously.

"Material that was selling for $150 a ton was now selling for $20," Dryden says. "That was pretty breathtaking. We had not seen that kind of behavior happen before."

A Recycling Butterfly Effect?

So, what happened? Well, hundreds of thousands of people didn't buy the TVs they wanted. Millions more didn't buy kitchen appliances, dolls or shoes. That means factories in China started making fewer cheap electronics and dolls and shoes and needed fewer boxes to put all that stuff in.

That's not only bad news for Dryden and wastepaper exporters; it brings up a completely different question: If China doesn't want recycling from the U.S. anymore, what happens to it?

"Recycling is based on an economic need for that material," Dryden says. Without one, he adds, the material might not get recycled. "We saw that with some of our accounts — the landfill option was the cheapest option."
"

an interesting point

i always lol when people think that the motivation for recycling is to help the environment

it is only viable if you can make money, not save the world
