My boyfriend and I want to get a dog when we get back to the States. I like big dogs but he likes small yappy dogs. I thought a Shiba would be a good compromise in size but he thinks they're ugly

That's another problem, what people think as cute are actually moves in a chessgame to gain control. Like eating your food at the table same time as you, sleeping on bed with you, growling at you when you move the dog from the couch.

Nothing should be done without your permission or before you (like eating).

I rescued a border collie/german shepherd mix
I was a bit worried at first that he would be insane due to the border collie but he's extremely mellow and behaves like a dream. I got him when he was 8 mos old so he was already house broken, I just had to get him crate trained which took about 2 weeks.

Our dog is freaking awesome, for us at least. Not a breed I'd recommend for your average consumer. Been hand feeding and rolling him since day one and he's still a dominant little bastard.

There was an absolutely gorgeous saluki/german shepherd mix at the spca a while back... friendly, too. If I was on the lookout for a dog, she would have been mine.

Try to compromise and get a skinny-but-big dog. (:
