that sucks, but

why did you have to wait for your husband to call 911? are you not capable of doing that yourself? that would have been the very first thing i would have done.

That's pretty badass. It would be kinda cool if your husband was able to use the sword on them. I guess that would be one of the few times where you would legally be able to slice some people up and get away with it.

i love how you implied that Durham is the reason you've been robbed.

1 - what part of durham do you live in?

2 - i've lived in durham for 20+ years and never had a problem at all

you should be, i was watchin first48 and there was this one episode where there was this old man that got murdered and was found duct taped up in his drive way shot up. it turns out that a few days prior he had caught some guys invading his home and chased them off and called the police

well those guys came back and duct taped him up and shot him then left him on the driveway to send a message not to fuck with them

so yea be on your guard.

just because he has a decorative sword doesnt mean he knows how to use it, that could turn out real bad had he tried...even if you are trained you just never know

its better to get the fuck outta there honestly...

then youd be a criminal

which is ok because you are protected since the ineptitude of the durham police dept makes Durham a lawless state

i didn't call 911 because, like several people in stories given here, i didn't realize what was going on at first. it didn't sink in until i was already on the phone with mj, and by then he was going to call them anyway so why bother both of us calling.

i don't blame durham. i blame a certain population of people in this area. and that type of people can be found anywhere. i was a bit disappointed that it took 15 minutes for police to arrive when we said the people may still be in the house, but that's a common complaint.

oh, and i've got glass in my foot now. guess it got track through the house by us, the cops and the forensics lady.

I live by Southpoint mall and love it.

Durham gets a bad wrap

OMG, Raleigh is so bad:

http://www.wral.com/news/news_briefs/story/4204649/

So is Apex:

http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/4157234/

Same for Cary:

http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/3630439/

Don't forget Garner:

http://www.wral.com/news/news_briefs/story/3406940/

Point being, this shit happens everywhere, but we have a stigma associated with Durham because of the well known low socio-economic area in certain parts of the Bull City.

Get over it. This shit is everywhere.

On a different note, Kitty B, I am very sorry this happened and am glad you are ok.

There's a chance I'll be moving to Durham this summer (if not NEBRASKA) - I'll be sure to have webcams and a security system.

when our house was broken in to last april, they brought bacon to feed our dog. could've done that to make friends which would be why she didn't appear overly upset by the time you got there.

You can pacify most dogs by throwing them something to eat.

On shows like "It Takes a Thief" the families usually said that they expected that their dogs would protect the house but it never happened that way. The guy would break in, give the dog some food and the dog was their new best friend.

yea i really dont understandusing housetrained dogs as a burglary deterrent at all

youre asking for your dog to sacrifice one of the intruders bullets, or you are asking for intruders to have an easy time getting your stuff

people really are out of touch with reality, dogs are not humans yet we dress em up and ascribe them personalities and try to determine their temperments as if they are human

they arent, theyre animals and they have no business being assigned the duty of protecting the home. especially if its some god damn pooch you got off craigslist or from the SPCA that isnt trained worth a shit in home defense or anything of an aggressive nature

its really fuckin stupid

I think the most any reasonable person would expect of their dog is to bark if someone is entering their house. That might not do a whole lot if nobody is home, but I'm sure there are plenty of instances where a barking dog alerted the homeowner of an intruder. I mean, if a dog barks at someone coming through the front door why wouldn't they bark and someone coming through the window?

Dogs will also serve as a thief deterrent. Depending on the criminal, they could be scared of dogs, and hearing a dog going nuts inside after you've started messing with the door/window could be enough to make him try next door. Obviously, others just bring bacon, but it may have helped one of my friends who was living by herself with a huge dog. Someone started messing with her door knob really late one night and the dog went bat shit insane, and they stopped.

yeah depends on the temperment of the dog, my so's sister has huge mini-horse like dogs (great danes) and they are pretty good at being alarms, if they didn't know me and if i acted aggressive inside (or getting in) at all they would probably be on me, and ill be damned if i'm gonna fuck with a 160 pound 3-4ft tall dog.

club blvd def has it's bad spots, but it doesn't matter where you live. a friend of mine lives in hope valley (near the country club) and she got robbed a few months ago. funny thing (to me, anyway) was that they didn't touch a pair of UNC basketball tix that were sitting on the counter next to the laptop they stole

^^That's bullshit. I lived in Durham from age 9 to when I moved here for school and we never (and my parents still have not) had any problems. Downtown/North East Central Durham is not a good place to be, though.

We talked about this in my social deviance class. Apparently they did a survey of robbers. The #1 thing to deter them was a sign marking there was a security system installed. #2 was dogs, the yappier the better
