I don't think that's the sole factor. You have to take into account the type and number of windows, the insulation quality and age, whether your heater itself is in good shape, how much sunlight you get, what you keep your thermostat at, hot water usage, etc.

For example, based on my square footage and $258 bill last month, i'm paying less per sq foot than you are, and I have gas.

I'd bet that the biggest factor in folks' energy bills is a combination of home size/insulation and personal habits than the price of gas or electricity.

Quite a bit, especially if you live in an apartment or townhouse and keep it cooler than the neighbors do.

Was your electric bill also included in that $258?

Gas bill before this was ~$53.

Note that we were gone from ~Dec.20 to ~Dec. 30. This is for a two-bedroom 1080sq.ft. apartment on the 2nd floor with two people and three cats. We are with PSNC energy -- it look like there might be a rate decrease (this was the implication at least) of about $0.12-$0.13 per therm for the coming few months.

Current electric bill won't come in for many another 10 days, but it is shaping up to be close to the last one at 378kwh or about $37, assuming no rate change. However, it would appear that the current 2009 rate for Duke Energy is $0.07048/kWh plus a basic facilities charge of $7.78/month (according to their rate schedule; we haven't gotten our first 2009 bill yet). I can't find the 2008 rate but it looks like it was ~$0.0981 without a facilities charge. Can anyone confirm this, or am I totally wrong?

Sweet...electric bill was $35.09 for this month.

340KWH used over 31 days -- 11KWH per day.

Actual energy charges were $26.20 but there's always that pesky "basic facilities charge" of $7.87 (plus tax)...

If you look at just the energy used, it's $0.85/day, if you want to add in the ever-present facilities charge it is $1.10/day. I'm hoping to get that under $1/day if possible...

Saving money has turned into a game. Our gas bill was down a few dollars from last month, we used 25% less water this month over the previous month, and we just dropped a few dollar with our electric bill. Woohoo!
