anyone wanna run together? I'm aiming sub 40min round trip or ~8min/mile pace

unsure how I'm going to eat those donuts...what strategy works best? I hate dunking donuts...so I was just going to pound em down 1 at a time...I saw the compress+dunk but I feel I'd just gag trying to eat em that way

I'm signed up for the race, and have begun practicing. I ate 11 donuts yesterday, the 12th was taken by an observer who saw me practicing. Best plan of attack is to flatten donuts on top of each other. I avoided water, because that would only add more to my intake. This thing is going to be no problem.

porcha, most people i've observed take the flatten pancake approach. take 3 to 4 of them, compress it down and take small quick bites. i don't think you want to stuff your mouth full of doughnut and try to chew, cause the stickiness will stop everything. and people do use water to help them go down.

i couldn't imagine eating 12 at one time. tip of the hat to those who have!

I gotta have some water with mine. Last year I squished 3 down, then dunked them in water (had another 3 soaking). While mildly funky, it worked well.

b/c the eating of the donuts is the slowest part.... not the puking on the way back or anything...

i was gonna factor in ~5-8min for the donuts and 8min/mile pace...hoping to come in under 40min round trip

I've got an enormous stomach...I don't think the 12 donuts will phase me....I'm known for packing down whole pizzas.....including a Damnit at one time

I'm going with the 20/20/20 splits. I think I can get there in 16 minutes, down the donuts in 15-18, then hope for the best on the way back. Most of the route back is gradually uphill. Nothing huge, but don't blow you're load too early.

i'd love it if the organizing committee got a wi-fi router at the store, laptop + webcam, and placed a projector back at the belltower.

that way folks waiting at the start/finish line could watch the mayhem down (via ustream.tv or something) at the store in quasi-realtime.

i tried pushing this last year, didn't happen.

Just go in with the attitude of, "i'm putting these things down as fast as possible," and show no mercy. Regardless of how you go about doing it, it's going to stop being fun around the 7th or 8th donut. I think some people are putting way too much thought into it. The challenge is nowhere near as grueling as people would like to make you think, so don't sweat it too much.

4760 registered, and they're capping it at 5,000. They had around 3,500 last year. Last day to register is Friday, but I'd bet that it'll fill up sometime today if this pace keeps up.

Good lord that's a bunch of donuts.

they've probably been told by the RPD that they can't accommodate more than 5,000 people. sure, the money is great, but too many people could make it tough to manage.

I think this rate of growth is fine. This is about 45% more than last year, and there's plenty to work out when scaled to this level (outside vendors for registration, media, chip timers, etc) Growing too big, too fast is a recipe for disaster, and I'd hate to see the KKC flop due to a bad year.

I'd be willing to bet they may level off eventually to around 6-8,000 runners/year, but that's still a huge, huge undertaking.

Registration was closed because the organizers chose to utilize chip timing. They need time to get all the sensors setup, apparently. This is first year it is being used.

@JT3bucky -- sorry to hear your frustrations in getting word back from the krispykremechallenge@gmail.com address. When my friends and I lead this between 2005-2007, we'd try to get responses back within 4 hours. I have observed that the current organizers do not share this diligence. I can't do much for you, unfortunately. This year I'm not getting heard either.

Good luck today guys! I'm going to try and get out there with my camera and take some video/pics. Sitting it out this year because I didn't have time to get into any shape. Last year I could at least run the distance without wanting to keel over. No way I could make it this year especially after plowing those doughnuts.

I'm glad they decided to go with chip timing. That was my first piece of advice after last years time posting debacle.

@DPK -- I look forward to seeing your pictures and videos! Have fun. Please link to them here.

@nacstate -- When we examined the chip-timing issue for 2007, we decided that the additional cost was not something we were willing to swallow. My preference for future years is to simply say "we'll time the top 10 finishers; everyone else, bring a watch if you care that much." Or maybe borrow a projector and just beam up a giant digital clock. Much cheaper option, and less hassle.
