I took jujitsu for a few years in Raleigh. That's a really good one for learning self-defense techniques. Basically it's all about incapacitating the other person with the least amount of effort on yourself.

"This is very true. In particular, katas/forms/poomses are mostly all symmetrical patterns of which their intent is to practice fighting off imaginary attackers from many directions"

kata/forms are a load of BS in terms of fight training. See the youtube video I posted earlier. Chinese masters fighting like little kids."

You have no idea what youre talking about and that is apparent in the incorrect context you assign to forms/katas.

Forms are not to literally teach you to fight off opponents. The premise behind forms is to implement techniques of the art - this type punch in this direction, this block in that direction followed by this kick in the other direction. This is most often done in every martial art in a systemic and symmetrical fashion of movements. Forms help individuals with technique, control, and to build muscle.

To help you visualize what Im talking about go here: http://www.kukkiwon.or.kr/english/information/information04_03.jsp?div=04

Select any of the poomses and watch the videos.
