Well, what major points do you want to cover in this discussion exactly?

You're not just getting screwed.
You're being taken advantage of like you would not believe, and enabling this woman's poor parenting.

That I can't do all the things asked of me during the time I have and that I want a raise. How much of a raise should I ask for? Should I go higher than I want to negotiate it.

I would explain that you're not satisfied with your current working conditions for a couple reasons, and you thought she would appreciate knowing this.

Say you can't get the kitchen, laundry, and beds done and done *well* within the allotted hour. Additionally, accomplishing these tasks on Mondays is especially difficult because you have 3 days worth of mess to clean, not just one. Offer to come in early to get the work done before the girls get home. I would also mention that if they want to find someone who can do the job faster, you'll understand.

Also, say that you've been thinking about all the responsibilities you have and have been discussing them with others in similar childcare positions. State you don't think you're making a competitive wage for taking care of two children, not being compensated for gas and wear and tear on your car, and for being a maid and cook. I'd state that you have great qualifications (CPR, experience) and could be making a lot more for personalized care that you give.Tell her what you think you should be making, and say that you have enjoyed working for her and understand if she wants to hire someone else if the amount seems like too much to her.

I hope that helps.

As far as pay:

Look into comps for what other people are getting paid. Bring examples to the discussion and be prepared to address objections she may have (this person had more experience, fewer duties, etc)

Try to find examples where people maybe had a little more experience/responsibility and were getting paid a lot more than you want, and also where people had the same or a little less experience/responsibility and were paid a little more than you want.

Generally speaking try to get where you can reasonably justify a couple bucks more than you want, ask for that number, and be willing, if she protests, to "help her out" and take a couple bucks less than that, i.e. your bottom line number.

wow, you're getting paid $10/hour for something worth at least $20/hr.

shit, my cleaning lady winds up making $25/hour off of me. she takes about 6 hours to clean the house, and i pay her $150 per visit.

That's not good pay for that type/amount of work even if it's under the table.

May i take you up on this offer? If so, i think this is going to be the best $5 i've ever spent.

Also, sawahash You are getting majorly screwed. Child care alone can be in the range of 600 a month per kid. Plus you're involved with doing cleaning and food preparation? You also use your own gas and car? There is no doubt that you're getting hosed. 15/hr would be far more reasonable. I know girls who have gotten more than you're getting to sit on their ass and do nothing when babysitting. it won't be hard for you to find another family who is at least willing to pay you the slave wage you're getting now. Worst case scenario you could find another job in the interim while you wait to find another family. You'll hardly be inconveniencing yourself by leaving them.

Also why do these people need you to bathe and wash the hair of these two girls at 6 and 8? I was doing my own laundry folding and putting up my own clothes by then.

I never got paid that much even as a supervisor at a store where I was solely responsible for everything...and I got taxes taken out.

Discuss things with her calmly and sweetly. Don't appear agitated at all. Let her get agitated. Stay cool and calm for the entire discussion.

"

wrong, that is horrible pay. i made a dollar less than that as a part timer at a craft store, and did not even close to a fourth of that

anyways, ive babysat for years. and still do. being a nanny/mothers helper is nowhere close to babysitting, in January of 2008 i got a nanny job off craigslist, for a lesbian couple where, i had crazy specific rules like that for their 2 year old daughter, had it not been in chapel hill and the actual mother of the child being crazy over-protective i would probably still be there. i was making $520 a week before taxes, benefits were provided, as was a room of my own. The couple i worked for however had a chef, a maid service and a handy man all that came once a week. However I was still responsible to wash the kids clothes and pick up her toys, and clean anything we used that day. I also had to cart her back and forth to activities everyday, but I was given money for the food/cost of activity, and at the end off the month a estimated gas check which was more than i used mostly.

and i found that on craigslist. you can do much much better, id charge 10$ an hour just to babysit 2 kids, and no cleaning besides cleaning up after ourselves.

get out, but at least tell the mother why, your leaving, after you have found another job of course, thats what i did when i quit my nanny job, and they appreciated knowing what it was that made me quit

I read half of the OP. so let me get this straight..

1) you work as a maid
2) you're bitching about picking up after your employers
3) you work as a maid

No, you are not over-reacting. These people are taking mad crazy advantage of you. $10/hr with no gas compensation is ridiculous, especially with two kids including a 'problem child'. I would have a meeting with the mother/parents...explain the situation and explain that you will be leaving unless things/constructive communication improve.

There are way better nannying positions out there...I can promise you that...

You know, honestly I don't know. I mean I can see with the washing of the hair, but I have to actually wash the girls. And then afterwards I have to BLOW DRY THEIR HAIR! So I sit there and fight with the girls who hate having their hair blow dried.

Nanny jobs blow. I did one for a few months and it was one of the worst working experiences of my life. Find something more worthwhile.

That stupid book the Nanny Diaries gave me post traumatic stress flashbacks

PS - I got paid more than you did for doing the same sort of bs and even then the other nannies in the area were telling me I was getting royally screwed. Get out of there!!

Working in a child daycare sucks more than being a nanny for a few kids. Worst two weeks of my life. I seriously wanted to pull my hair out.

no thank you. If y'all think Kate (from Jon and Kate plus 8) is a tough person to deal with then you know nothing of this mother, and she just has two children.

Just leave her a note saying, "I'm out!" and never go back.

When I quit my nanny job I gave the woman three week's notice and she told me she wasn't going to pay me for my last three weeks I left the next day.

You have got to be KIDDING ME!!!!!!

Ok so yet again my hours have been cut back. I go in at 3 now. Today is a day that I don't have to take the girls anywhere. So there is a little more time to get things done...however, she now wants me to spend 45 mins cleaning with the girls on mondays. It also takes about 45 mins to get homework done. However today she also wants me to go over songs with them so they will know the words sunday in church. And both girls need to have a bath by 5:30.

The girls get home between 3:30 and 3:45

So can someone please tell me how I'm supposed to work on homework for 45 mins, clean for 45 mins, practice songs with them, and give them baths between 3:45 and 5:30?

Gah, thank God I am going to work at Lutheridge this summer.

I decided that since I'm going to be in Asheville all summer there is no point in trying to find a new job for 2.5 months, it's gonna be hard finding someone who will want to hire me for that short amount of time.
