In 1998 a guy from my highschool died from heat exhaustion (Max Draughon).
happened the day before school started.

get this....

he asked the coach for water and the coach told him he could after one more sprint. he collapsed during the sprint and died.

since then triton has mandatory water breaks for the football players.

There is probably fault on both sides. The coach probably scared the kid into not wanting to speak up, but the kid should have realized that he knows his body and if he had to stop he should have stopped.

When I was in high school there were mandatory water breaks once it got hot. When I was playing soccer and it got to a certain temp the coach said if you need water, stop and get water, I won't stop you. Unless of course it was someone trying to get out of running.

But I guess in soccer it's much easier to tell if a player is really in need of water or a break since they don't have all that equipment or a helmet to hide some symptoms.

i highly doubt the kid was so scared of his coach that when he started feeling ill he couldnt say woah coach im sorry but somethings really wrong, if the players were that scared of him he would not be coaching

You have never been on a team, and apparently were never 15 years old, or you forgot how you viewed adults when you were 15, especially adults that had authoritative positions over you.

Yeah when I was 15 I really never spoke up against people in charge of me. I didn't do that until I was a senior in high school. I mean hell, I asked permission to skip on senior skip day. If my coach was yelling at me telling me that if I stop running I'm off the team, I'll be damned if I stop running.

i imagine that heat exhaustion is not a slow death.

i remember there were a ton of times in high school where i ran so much i stopped and threw up gatorade (gross i know)
but there were several times where i would just keep pushing myself to go harder.

i imagine that maybe even the kid didn't realize he would actually die from it. just thought he was super thirsty/ worn out.

lol i played softball for 13 years 6 of which were on my middle school and high school teams. basketball and volleyball for 4 and tennis and swim team. i had nice coaches, bitchy ones, hard/scary ones but none of them would have ever said no your health does not matter if i said hey im not feeling well somethings wrong, or hey i really need water.

yea i skipped 15, went right from 14-16

lol like the lady said, people need to start taking fault for their actions, and stop blaming everyone else, hell for all we know it may be his parents/doctors fault, maybe noone told him his meds were dehydrating him, but you'd think he say hey im thirsty. lol i guess the coach needs to be able to read his mind.

but if you were feeling crazy dehydrated, or ill youd tell you're coach no? and if you dont thats you're fault. any normaly person would but their health before getting kicked off a team

So you just walked away when you were thirsty in the middle of a rep/lap/whatever, or was never told to keep going and drink later? If you say no to either of these questions you are lying.

^ lol that doesnt make sense, i got water when we had water breaks, or when we were on the bench/dugout

if you read what im typing, im not saying you just walk away, im saying you say hey somethings not right im feeling really thirsty/dehydrated, and inform someone what your doing, that way they dont get pissed, and if somethings really wrong they have some clue to why you pass out. its called communication and responsibility. he was 15 not 3.

Oh I would have hell to pay if I stopped running in the middle of laps or sprints to get a drink of water. Not only from my coach but from my teammates. Anytime someone got water while we were running the teammates would whisper "They're just trying to get out of running"

I've been running in practice to the point of throwing up. And while I'm throwing up the coach is telling me to keep running. I mean when it was really hot we would get water breaks after we did our laps, and after we did a drill, and after we did sprints, and at the end of practice, and told that if we need water at any point between we could get some, but we would still get our asses rode if we did.

Does anyone here "Remember the Titans?" Just a quote from the movie:
Blue Stanton: Coach we need a water break, we been out here all day!
Coach Boone: What did you say?
Blue Stanton: Said, we need a water break.
Coach Boone: A water break? Water is for cowards. Water makes you weak. Water is for washing blood off that uniform and you don't get no blood on my uniform, boy you must be outside your mind! We are going to do up-downs, until Blue is no longer tired, and thirsty.

I remember asking for water while feeling lightheaded, sick, etc at football practice and being denied. We had set water breaks and it was very rare if someone got water in between these breaks. Also, is it not possible that the kid knew he was tired, thirsty, whatever, but decided to press on and push himself, push his body past that mental barrier?

I've played tackle football since I was 5 years old (mighty mites in Paris Island ftw), all the way through my sophomore year of college. I've had plenty of coaches who were complete assholes, and would certainly call you a pussy if you asked for water. However, none of them would have denied a kid water if there was a serious risk involved. Not even the crazy Vietnam vet that made us call the tackling dummy (a stuffed C-bag) Mary.

I'm sure the coach probably pushed him hard, but I don't think he is at fault.

Most coaches will tell you to shut up, but if you're dizzy and cannot see straight and you tell a coach that, they'll let you get water.

Yep, this is what usually happens with heat exhaustion. You're just thinking you're tired/thirsty/hot and them BAM! you're passed out on the ground somewhere. You don't necessarily feel like, "oh shit son, I need some water RIGHT NOW or I'm gonna pass out." This happens to my students all the time in summer but luckily none of them have died

^^Yeah, the problem is that you are constantly instilled with the "shut up and keep working" mentality.

Yep. I played tackle football for almost 8 years. Things changed dramatically a couple of years after I graduated, but during my time playing, especially in middle and high school, we were ONLY allowed water during team breaks.

Unless you blacked out or went into uncontrollable vomiting, you didn't ask and you didn't complain. There were more than a few times that I kept practicing with tunnel vision, nausea, disorientation, cramping, and borderline heat exhaustion. Looking back it was fucking stupid and I (and others) should have said something, but peer and mentor pressure makes a lot of people do a lot of stupid things (MILITARY IS A GREAT EXAMPLE HERE).

And 94 degree heat index ain't shit. August in NC was 100-110 heat index for 7 hours a day, 5 days a week.
