I first made mine private a few weeks before I went to SERE school. I didn't want them to know anything about me. For the same reason, I have kept it private ever since, removed my name from my user info on this website, etc. If I get shot down or eject over any sort of hostile (or anything other than friendly) area, I want to minimize the amount of information that they can easily find about me.

It's not that likely to happen, I know...and here in Iraq, if the bad guys got to me, they'd probably just execute me in a propaganda movie, but regardless, I'd rather pick and choose what information is out there about me.


The other reason is due to my daughter's mother sueing me a couple of years ago, trying to keep me from having visitation with my daughter, etc (well, really, she was trying to take as much money from me as she could, but while she was at it, she tried to keep my visitation to a minimum). One reason she and her lawyer tried to use was that, at the time, I had a roommate who drank a pretty fair amount (of course, she tried to keep me from having my daughter when he wasn't around, too...to make a long story short, I don't know what she was thinking, but I know that my roommate was just an excuse). At any rate, while I don't think I have anything even remotely incriminating on my Facebook page, I don't like to have to carefully screen every little thing I put on there, wondering if there's any crazy way that some sleazy lawyer might try to spin or misrepresent it.

I wonder how many people out of 10 would assume I smoke pot if I list Pink Floyd in my favorite music....I've quit but I still like them

dude, in addition to a HUGE variety of other stuff, I listen to Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers Band, Beatles, Stones, Sublime, you name it. I think I even have a few Cypress Hill tunes. That doesn't mean anything.

when it comes down to having private profiles... whats the point of even having a profile? your friends already know all that shit about you. what it all boils down to is chicks posting hundreds of identical pictures of the same group of people out at bars in albums titled (cRaZy pArTy nItE 2OO9!!)

i could probably just make it public since i don't have pics anyway

For most people, I don't see any big deal about having a public profile. Mine was public for a long time. I'd like to keep it that way, but for the reasons above, wouldn't even consider it. For me, it's a choice between much more stringent privacy settings or deleting the whole thing.
