Incomplete meal. You need to throw in a couple of cans of chickpeas/beans, or some chicken/beef/fish.

Who has had fool? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ful_medames

It is mighty tasty, nutritious, and cheap. It originated in Egypt, and a lot of poor people have it there for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Basically, it is fava beans which are slow-cooked for like half a day, until they disintegrate pretty much completely. Then it can be served with chopped onion, tomato, etc, and is eaten with a special flat bread. The pic in the link above shows a variety where the beans are still intact.

You can get enough in poor people restaurants for $0.27 to be enough for a meal for one. They slow-cook it in huge bulbous brass cookers which can hold enough for hundreds of people.

BTW, very few of you are listing actual poor people's foods.

Quote :
"Peasant foods (or poor people's food ) are those dishes specific to a particular culture made from accessible and inexpensive ingredients and usually prepared and spiced to make them more palatable. They have often formed a significant part of the diets of poor people."

Here are some poor people's foods:

How many of those you people know?

Sounds like some of my friends who are dating. He is allergic to fibrous fruits (melons, apples, etc.) They both hate vegetables. Their diet consists of the cheapest, fattiest, meats they can find and stuff like Mac & Cheese. They're in their mid 20's and had never had anything other than white bread until we were grilling some hot dogs last summer and I picked up some whole grain buns.

Not unless you buy them when they're on sale and you have a coupon. (FL frequently does $1 HH, and then you get some cents off buying three or whatever)

My mom used to make big pots of lentils, rice and onions when we were low on cash. But now lentils are kinda of expensive so I don't think it can be considered poor people food anymore

When pork chops or chicken were on super sale she'd make homemade shake n bake. Flour, bread crumbs, salt, pepper, and whatever dried herbs we had on hand. That with some frozen veggies on the side could be as cheap as $2/person.

It's food people eat when they're poor in America. I guess it doesn't met your cultural standards
