that makes no sense at all. You do realize there is a big difference between anabolic steroids and other steroids used to treat diseases right?2/9/2009 3:08:55 PM |

Griffey by far.
All those injuries and he still managed 611 homers?? Ridiculous. He would have been far above Bonds, Aaron, and Ruth by now if he had stayed healthy. Best player not only of our generation, but probably EVER.
He has 2680 hits, 1772 RBI (while on crappy teams in Seattle and Cincinatti that never had runners on base), and was an all-star (close to a 30-100 season) in his 19th year as a pro. You just can't beat that.

Pujols has been incredibly consistent, and from all accounts he is clean. I'd be upset, but not surprised to find out that guys like Pujols, Chipper, and especially Griffey were doing roids. 2/9/2009 3:18:15 PM |

Griffey wouldnt have been hurt if he was taking, they actually help your joints and your system recover much faster than at a normal rate. Steroids dont just automatically make you hit it further and higher...its with your workout and fatigue rate as well as recovery.
you cant just take them and expect it to be like Popeye you have to work still...
as for

not to mention that most steroids actually bring DOWN your immune system and make you more vulnerable to sickness and disease. I doubt thats why Magic is still kicking.
I wouldnt be surprised if any of the guys that are leading these categories and have been in the league 10+ years are juicing.2/9/2009 3:23:04 PM |

1. Steroids do not prevent injuries 2. Griffey never had joint problems

Maddux, no doubt
As far as A-Rod goes, I have a lot of respect for him coming clean and not pulling a Giambi.

This isn't true at all. Anadrol, Dianabol and other anabolic steroids have been prescribed as a treatment for AIDS wasting, in order to stimulate the appetite and facilitate muscle growth. Testosterone and HGH are commonly prescribed to those with issues of the pituitary gland or hypothalamus. There have been many other medical applications for anabolic steroids.2/9/2009 5:10:40 PM |

Isn't true at all? For the most part, steroids used to treat diseases are glucocorticoids, because the most common use of steroids for medical problems involves some sort of anti-inflammatory/immune suppression. Is that to say that there are no medical uses for anabolic steroids, especially something like testosterone? no, they're just rare. If you look at the pathophysiology of how AIDS kills you, it makes no sense at all to suggest that anabolic steroids would slow the course of the disease. If they did, why aren't more people prescribed them? Pituitary/Hypothalamic disorders that require that type of treatment are incredibly rare.
What you described about anadrol may be very true, but thats symptomatic treatment of AIDS, not treatment of the disease its self. All thats going to do is improve quality of life, and possibly extend it if the patients biggest problem is their weight. On the other hand, if a patients T4 count is in the single digits, the steroids are irrelevant and possibly even harmful. They're going to die of something else at that point.
Point being, the assumption that the reason Magic is still alive today because he was juicing is absurd.2/9/2009 5:41:07 PM |

jesus christ, I'm watching the interview on Sportscenter right now and I wish I had a dollar for every time A-Roid has said "it was a different era" 2/9/2009 6:12:39 PM |

exactly
Peter Gammons pussied out of the interview.
PG: so it was only 2001, 2002, 2003? A-Rod: pretty much yes
PG: pretty much??? so when did it start and end Alex? lets move on, what substances did you take? A-Rod: it was a different era. it was a different era. i don't really know what I took
PG: so you don't know what you had taken, ingested, injected??? how did you know it wasn't cocaine? who gave you the substances? A-Rod: it was a different era. it was a different era.
talk about some hard hitting questions there, no followup, it was like a damn A-Rod apology session 2/9/2009 11:38:30 PM |

Agreed on the interview being soft, but at least he came out and straight up took responsibility for at least some of what he did. I'm not dumb enough to think we heard the whole story there, but thats a hell of a lot more information than he had to give, and its a hell of a lot more than anyone before him gave when they were busted. 2/9/2009 11:42:26 PM |

I feel like A-Rod was going to spill a LOT more if PG had pushed the issue. Hell, A-Rod nearly said that management forced him to take steroids during his initial answer.
reaffirmed is my belief that ESPN is a below average reporting network, and certainly isn't a credible news organization

are you people retarded? do some research on HIV drugs before you go spewing forth stupid shit like this. HIV related muscle wasting is one of the few reasons why anabolic steroids other than testosterone can be prescribed. A simple google search would have sufficed.
Also, anabolic steroids don't suppress the immune system. Medical studies have shown that steroids don't lower CD4 and CD8 counts in HIV positive men. I'm sure the medical community understands the situation a hell of a lot better than you do.

I bet if this had come out in 2003 he would have denied it. After what has happened to Bonds, Clemens, Palmiero, Big Mac, etc., its clear now that hiding it is a bad move and you can get sympathy and good PR by coming clean. I don't for one second believe that A-Rod is doing it this way to be a better person than the rest of them, because at the end of the day he is still a shit bag.2/10/2009 3:34:50 AM |

Did you read my follow-up post to that? Did you ever see me mention how steroids affect CD4 counts? Did you ever see me mention how anabolic steroids affect the immune system? All I was saying is that its absurd to suggest that Magic Johnson is still alive b/c he was juicing (if he was juicing). I even said in the second post that anabolic steroids could be usefull in symptomatic treatment of AIDS. Reading comprehension dude.

I did, and it was utter nonsense much like your first statement. To try to claim that anabolic steroids aren't commonly prescribed medications shows just how little you understand about the medical community and especially about HIV treatment.
FYI, the only time insurance will cover HGH is if you are HIV positive. they usually won't even cover it if you have a defective pituitary gland, but they'll cover HGH and anabolic steroids to help prevent muscle wasting. If a bunch of penny pinching insurance companies understand why these drugs are so beneficial to people with HIV, then why are you being so stubborn about it?

Do you not realize that almost 6 million men in america are already on medically prescribed testosterone replacement therapy? As pharmaceutical companies keep coming out with patches and creams, the number of men taking them will continue to skyrocket as well.

5% of 4 million males with clinical hypogonadism recieve treatment. Only indicated uses are delayed puberty and male hypogonadism, in addition to certian metastatic breast cancers in females.
Where are you getting that figure? you may be right, I can't find it anywhere, and I have an academic medical center's entire library resources at my fingertips. Plus, I agreed with you that testosterone and GH can be used to treat HIV associated cachexia. What are you trying to prove?
Just last week, we I had it pounded into my head that GH administration does not improve end of life outcome for weak/feeble patients. There is theoretical value to its administration, including testosterone replacement in the elderly male population, and it may very well be prescribed quite commonly, but find me the sources where its proven and I'll shut up. I'm not spewing off here. If I'm wrong, back it up with some facts. I'm not being disrespectful, and I'd like to know. As a matter of fact, PM me, these people don't want to read this garbage. 2/11/2009 7:28:05 PM |
