i think the average shitty driver in NC would be able to compete for the best driver in SC. 2/17/2009 4:50:15 PM |

lol. I've competed in NC as well and yes it was a little more difficult. Let's stay OT though, k? 2/17/2009 4:53:55 PM |

I could have played any sport at a college level if I had tried. But I only tried baseball, so that's what I played. 2/17/2009 5:15:29 PM |

basketball or cross country
played basketball year-round (school and then aau during summer) from 11 to 17 years old but had some political bs at my high school team and quit playing
could never have played ACC level hoops but I could have maybe played somewhere small in college had i stuck with it and gone to a HS that had a coach that knew two cents about the game
ran 16:36 in HS for a 5K and never really took it all that seriously. again, was decent but not great; maybe could have done the same thing as in bball, ran at a small college somewhere, maybe DII. 2/17/2009 7:46:30 PM |

swimming and middle distance running.
never really got into year round/age group swimming. low 50's in the 100 with a shitty coach mostly practicing by myself (51 something), could have possibly made the swim team at ncsu.
mid distance running would probably be one of my other ideal sports, but i've never really competed or been on any sort of team. probably would not have run in college

no, you couldn't have been that good then.
shit i made states every year in HS and that was just summer league and self practice 90% of the time.
oh and I did win all my intramural swimming events when i did them, at least vs all the non-varsity guys )

^depending on what school you go to, its not I had Olympians on my team, so you're telling me its not impressive b/c i didn't beat them?
Anyway quit insulting people's perceived "natural abilities" b/c some of you ppl are warping what this thread's about. 2/17/2009 11:23:58 PM |

The two I have the most natural ability for are probably wrestling and basketball.
I feel like I could have at least walked on to an ACC (or equivalent conference) wrestling program if I had more training.
Basketball, not so much. I never had any formal training but I used to shoot around a lot and was pretty wicked from the perimeter despite developing my own shooting mechanics (instead of being taught). I barely have the height (5'11") to be a serious high school player though, much less a college one. If I was Dennis Horner's height and had some formal training maybe I could start on some bottom feeder D1 school 2/17/2009 11:49:58 PM |

I decided in middle school that I wanted to play baseball for NC State.
Then I was in a skiing accident and messed up my legs, so varsity sports was out of the question.
I stuck with State though, threw my UNC acceptance letter into a bonfire. 2/18/2009 8:25:17 AM |

Even with my PCL and shoulder injuries and not training as hard as I should have in HS for wrestling, I got offers from D2 schools and even talked to App State. In addition to that, State's 2nd string wrestler my freshman year in college for the weight class I would have competed at was someone I had never lost to in HS. So, I don't think I am kidding myself, but luck didn't fall my way (late season injuries preventing me from really showcasing myself at States) and I really didnt put my 100% effort into training in HS since wrestling came pretty easy to me.
In college I had 2 friends on the wrestling team and I talked to them about walking on and after they told me how much time it took up I decided that I wanted to actually have some recreation time in college - mainly to start my band (which I dont regret at all so I guess it worked out in the end), so I never tried. 2/18/2009 10:20:05 AM |

The 2 golf pro's I worked for made contact with coach Sikes about me walking on at State but he doesn't give tryouts and apparently a walkon will never beat one of his top 6 so he doesn't take them unless they're "prefered"....well one of the 2 that called walked onto his golf team freshman year and was their #2 (behind his younger brother) and on scholarship by his junior year.
Doesn't really matter b/c I wasn't really interested in playing anyway and I didn't ask them to call, but whatever. Nobody gives a shit about golf haha. 2/18/2009 10:36:36 AM |

i'm going to reiterate what i said before - i have no natural ability. a lot of this talk is wishful thinking. and over the span of a decade, it is possible to become a bit slower yet a lot stronger.2/18/2009 11:23:52 AM |

wolfAApack Sikes is a douche. I considered it too. I beat some of the guys on the team in high school and tournaments regularly. He likes foreign guys because they are more serious in his opinion and don't party as much. I am pretty good friends with a former player. They all pretty much don't like him. 2/18/2009 2:12:49 PM |
