This is the first time I have ever been fired in my life. And I can totally understand them not letting me go back to my desk. It is a HIGHLY competitive industry, so they don't want me taking anything that might hurt their business.

I've never been fired or laid off. It could happen one day, but I'm pretty lucky when it comes to internal politics. At every place that I've worked at so far, I've had a lot of "pull" with the people. I don't let that go to my head publicly though, and that's probably why I remained when everyone else was getting laid off. In actuality, it did go to my head privately, but people can only judge you by your actions and what you say, not by what you think about yourself privately.

I don't believe he will get fired.

The company I worked for was bought and the new owners let me go. Everything had been great up until that point. I didn't even have a clue -- my boss had been giving me more responsibility, hours, and lots of recognition for the job I was doing. Then I went to lunch one day and came back to be fired.

not necessarily...depends on the state and, of course, the situation (difference between being laid off and fired)...in NC, they can fire you for no reason whatsoever...in others (colorado comes to mind), they have to meet certain criteria to "fire" someone

sure, budgets and the economy can dictate whether or not you're laid off...but i never implied otherwise...as someone who is in charge of hiring and firing those beneath me, i'm quite aware of what i can and cannot do

I mean, I have no idea what you do. I can just assume it's not much. It also depends on how your company is structured. All I'm saying is it doesn't take much for someone higher up in the corporate ladder to just eliminate the need for your position. At that point, you just....don't have a job anymore. without having done anything wrong. No criteria to meet. You're just ass out.

So I just got home now. I still have my job. But for some reason I don't feel good.

Actually, I am pretty shaken up, upset, and feel vulnerable and nauseous. And that's for the past 6 hours. Wife gone to England to deliver, so no one to comfort me in person.

This week is a holiday actually for the college. I was supposed to go in anyway, to conduct the calculus placement test. After meeting the Dean for 30+ minutes, I gave the test to the students, who had to wait for a while. I didn't go to my office afterwards. Left the college and didn't feel like going home, because of how I was feeling as I said above. Went to Starbucks and had an Almond Croquant and a Double Mocha Machiatto to try to make myself feel better. Then to Quizno's and had a Zesty Steak sub and an apple Tropicana. Then went to get a haircut. Turkish barber. Gave me nice Turkish tea. And then home.

The Dean basically asked me what happened in the Director of Admin's office yesterday, and then gave me a lecture on how to deal with people in an academic institution. I know how to deal with people professionally, thank you. I can't describe in too much detail here what argument I had yesterday with the Director of Finance without describing the legalities and conditions of employment of foreigners in the country I am in. And I don't want to say much about the country as well lest the powers that be take it as an attack on the country and haul me in and deport me. With a family, I can't take that risk. It is highly unlikely that there are gov informants and spies who check TWW, but it is a risk not worth taking. And seeing what happened to hooksaw, we all know some people here are capable of harming people IRL they don't like online.

During his lecture, he also thanked me for helping the college and their new MBA program. That felt good.

You people should be grateful for being in the US, where you have certain rights, that almost everybody takes for granted. I mean, I can't even post full details about the scenario, let alone tell you how the college is wrong vis a vis my status in the college, legally speaking.

And thanks for the support everybody, it makes me feel good, especially considering how I am feeling right now. I already feel much better. Will skype my wife later... that should make me feel even better.
