wins and losses are terrible stats for fantasy purposes because most of the time is out of your pitchers hands

give up 1 run and get the loss, give up 6 runs and get the win, etc

Quality Starts are better

Glad I got Zach Greinke and Chad Billingsley while others grabbed Cliff Lee and CC Sabathia early!

i guess if you go >= 6 innings and allow <= 3 runs you get 1 point for that start?

is this a stupid strategy

I usually try to keep 5 SP in rotation and a couple of closers... I'm having trouble finding a decent 5th guy - I was thinking about maybe picking up a couple of solid middle relief pitchers in place of a 5th starter, help keep the ERA down, pick up a win or save here and there... what does everybody think?

If it's a roto league it's not a horrible idea...your K's might suffer a bit so you'll want to keep an eye on how you do there, but you only figure to lose around 10 wins over the course of a year and it would definitely help your ERA and WHIP...I see it as a boost to 2 categories and a hit to 1

yeah it's a roto league... I hate head to head

Yeah that's the way I was looking at it - I'll try it out for a little while and see how it works. I got Clay Condrey from Philly and Andrew Bailey from Oakland. Bailey could even turn out to be a closer, so I guess that's an added bonus.

Which of these will be the best from here on in:

Aaron Hill, Dan Uggla, Brandon Phillips. I have all three thanks to trades and wanting to stick with one and move the other two. I am leaning Phillips.

i would agree

and despite whats happened so far this year, I'd put Uggla 2nd behind Phillips with Hill 3rd

Phillips has been very unlucky so far this year, so if you generally view all 3 of them as somewhat equal, I would make the argument that Phillips perform better going forward

Quote :
"Phillips has been hot at the plate in '09, making more contact, walking much more often and enjoying longer plate appearances. Oh wait, scratch that; Phillips is batting a paltry .207. Other than the "hot at the plate" part, everything else in that sentence is true. And we can't blame his low average on a dearth of line drives or a bevy of flyballs. His batted ball rates are practically mirror images of those from the last two years. There is no explanation for Phillips' funk other than plain old bad luck. Phillips is a great buy-low candidate right now.

Year Team Line Drive % Flyball % BABIP Avg.
2007 Cincinnati 0.188 0.341 0.307 0.288
2008 Cincinnati 0.169 0.339 0.281 0.261
2009 Cincinnati 0.173 0.347 0.203 0.207 "

Phillips should bat about .275 and hit 20 homers, steal 20 bases, and maybe get about 80 runs and 80 RBIs

I think Uggla will bat about .250, possibly could hit 30 homers, steal like 5 bags, and probably get a few more runs and RBIs than Phillips

Aaron Hill...I don't know what he'll do, I just don't see him keeping up his current numbers

if you have JJ Hardy, now is the time to play him. it looks like this will be his hot month or so, so in about 2-3 weeks trade him, because he's going to suck the rest of the year. he'll still hit about 20 HR, but about 12 will be in one month.

at what point do you give up on Verlander"

holy shit I'm glad I waited a little longer... in the 4 games (29 and 1/3 IP) since that comment from me - 3-0 (left with a 5-0 lead today that is down to 5-3), 44 K's, and only 1 ER

edit: okay I think 2 of those today will he his but still.. only 3 ER in 4 games

i was definitely wrong about verlander

in other news...Lance Berkman might've finally gotten his shit together...went 4/4 last night, although that only takes his average up to like .216...Carl Crawford is probably going to miss a couple games after hurting his shoulder diving for a flyball...at least he didnt hurt his legs as speed is his strength...Ryan Ludwick on the DL...Brandon Webb recovery going well supposedly...Ethier has cooled the fuck off lately since Manny isn't in the lineup...Ricky Nolasco sucks but I'm still holding onto him

and thats the news from my team

Need some advice on which pitchers to use this week, have 6 spots which the following choices:

CC Sabathia (2 starts, obviously starting)
John Lackey (2 starts, fairly obvious choice)
Aaron Harang
Edwin Jackson
Jorge De La Rosa
Chris Young (2 starts, has been fairly shaky lately though)
Matt Harrison (has been one of the hottest pitchers, if not the hottest, over the last month)
Dave Bush (2 starts, been very hot lately)
Micah Owings (has been much better in his last few starts and going against Moyer, who is awful)

Based on matchups and performance on the year I'm fairly set on using Sabathia, Lackey, Harang, Jackson, and De La Rosa as my top 5, but I could probably go either way on De La Rosa in favor of one of the other guys. As for Young, Harrison, Bush, and Owings, I have no idea...I could make an argument for all of them.

Micah Owings? I hope your league is deep or he is your hitting pitcher.

Is John Maine ever going to be relevant in fantasy? Even when he is good, he only goes five innings.

yeah Micah Owings would be a solid player if you got credit for hits by a pitcher in your league

First of all he's 3-4 with a 3.95 ERA on the year...yes it's a deep league, but I can find plenty of "fantasy relevant" players that are doing worse than this starting in much shallower leagues. Also in his last 2 starts he gave up only 1 run in each of them.

Second of all, I didn't use him. I also didn't use Chris Young as he's been killing me lately, which was obviously a possible mistake, but Bush did get me a win and only 2 ER last night, so I'm not going to beat myself up over it. I really just hope Young can start producing like he did 2 years ago.

Yahoo has had him as a "cold" pitcher for the past week because of all the runs he let in his last start...I found that pretty funny

I got an offer, I get Ryan Braun, I give Justin Morneau.

I've got Miguel Cabrera I can move from CI to 1b to take Morneau's place.
My current OF is Bay, Ethier, Spilborghs, J.Upton, Pierre (picked up from FA today, released I.Stewart); so my OF could really use the help, but my net production by making the move won't really be much different I don't think. However, this is a keeper league and having Braun instead of Morneau gives me roster flexibility for next year. But, Morneau is so hot right now, and if he keeps playing like he has, his name will be included in MVP discussions.

thoughts?

can somebody advise me how to get a fucking W out of a pitcher when I have Gallardo and Carpenter. god damnit.

^umm, i probably wouldn't do it, but i've never been in a keeper league so i don't really know everything that goes into one. I'm sure Braun will have good numbers, and morneau should cool off a little I would think, so in fantasy terms you probably should... i wouldn't though

I'm a Twins fan and I would do it...Morneau is a beast, but if you already have Miggy Cabrera, he, too, is a top 1B, and I expect Braun to hit more homers than Morneau this year...if anything I think the trade is fair

Trade offer... I get Randy Johnson, I give Andy LaRoche

First off, both of these guys are bench fodder in my league, so yes, this is a bit overkill putting it on the message board BUT I'd still like to see anyone's views on whether or not you think the Unit can pull anything together this season.

what the hell do i do with garrett atkins. do i really drop him for someone like bonaficio or burriss?

slim pickins on the waiver wire...12 man league, all "on top" of things when it comes to adding sleepers

^^I think RJ is done personally. He is pitching in a better pitcher's park this year and sucking worse. The man is 45. Laroche has a decent bit of potential,

I read somewhere that Atkins has had a terrible BABIP and due to turn things around soon...I probably wouldn't drop him if those guys you mentioned are the best on the waiver wire

So it looks like I've got a guy interested in dealing me either Billingsley or Greinke for Inge + ? ... he's looking through my guys and I'll see what else he wants, but how much would you guys be willing to give up in addition to Inge to land one of the two mentioned pitchers? Here's my team:

Brandon Inge
Geovany Soto
Dustin Pedroia
Elvis Andrus
Christian Guzman
David Wright
Mark Reynolds
Paul Konerko
Hank Blalock
Jason Bay
Adam Jones
Adam Dunn
Vernon Wells
Jeremy Hermida
Chris B Young

CC Sabathia
John Lackey
Aaron Harang
Edwin Jackson
Chris R Young
Dave Bush
Randy Johnson
Trevor Cahill
Jorge de la Rosa
Matt Harrison
Jeremy Guthrie
Brian Tallet
Brian Fuentes
David Aardsma
Brad Ziegler

Ideally, I'd like to throw him 1 or 2 of my lower end pitchers who aren't starting, but since he's got his 2 aces on the block, I doubt he's looking for pitching back, and even at that...he'd probably want someone like Harang back.

Doumit is indeed out for a while. If Wieters is available grab him. Also take a look at Brandon Inge. Also seeing as he is leading catchers right now he probably isn't available unless people don't realize he qualifies as catcher.

If there's not much available, Inge is a good choice because he's going to give you some flexibility at 3B and OF too. I've got him, and he's been pretty solid -- decent stats.

i'd like to get wieters, but i've already got inge plugged in at catcher. i can't really justify dropping him for a rookie who may or may not do better down the stretch

and is it time to drop maggs? i never play him except on travel days, and he rarely gives me cause for hope. i mean 2 homers through may? really?

should I drop Chris Davis for Mark Reynolds? Davis has been terrible, but I remember last year Reynolds had a nice power stretch then had a long stretch where he struck out all the time...still Davis isn't even playing because he's so bad and despite having 12 HRs, he's batting under .200...Reynolds is batting about .265 but has 13 HRs, 10 steals, and is an every day player for Arizona

Is Davis' upside worth holding onto him or should I say fuck it and get Reynolds? I have Berkman and A-Rod so he's just a backup anyway

Russell Branyan is also available

I've got Mark Reynolds and I definitely wouldn't trade him for Chris Davis. Reynolds strikes out a lot and is somewhat streaky, that's been proven. But you've got to remember this is only his second full year in the majors and there's still no telling what he can do. I don't think it's a stretch at all to think he could keep up his current numbers and finish the year with 40 HR and 30 SB
