Well, for example, I am excited to be talking to another Amna in Oman and also I tweeted with snoopdogg. It is a way to meet people from all over. I now have some contacts with different galleries as well. The mattress factory, a small gallery I love in Pittsburgh, I am following actually retweeted some news I posted. It is just another way to stay connected.

people who think this is worthless are seriously fucking retarded. there are many occurrences of huge news stories breaking on twitter before CNN.

it has incredible journalistic value, and incredible networking value, almost regardless of your field.

Beating CNN isn't really even an issue, it's just kind of a "hey look at how much we rock" thing for twitter. Shit get CNN's twitter updates sent to you.

Why Twitter Is Different From Facebook Status

On Facebook, you see a random selection of your friends' status updates on your front page. You can see all of them, if you want. If you see a status message from Alice, and Betty comments on it, you can comment on it too, and Betty will get notified that you also had something worthless to say; even though she probably doesn't know you or care about you.

On Twitter, you only see updates from people you have explicitly marked "follow". Also, you can only be direct messaged from people you explicitly marked "follow", which is why the service appeals to famous black people (white people too, I guess). This lets them stroke their hollywood-egos about how popular they are, because some people never mature past high school.

But the biggest difference: on Twitter, if you want to post a message (a "tweet") in response to someone, you prefix it with "@whoever". By default, only people following both you and whoever will see it. This effectively turns the whole thing into a large distributed chatroom with a high signal-to-noise ratio, because you can throttle messages to be limited to only those you want to see.

the biggest difference is that with facebook you only are connected to people you know. with twitter, you can connect to anybody, and they don't necessarily have to follow you. you see only what you want to see. also, twitter is much more real-time (and therefore much more like a natural conversation although distributed) than facebook statuses. though that may change in the upcoming months - facebook has made it pretty clear they want to be more like twitter with a real-time sharing strategy

and if you want, you can connect your fb and twitter accounts so that when you post on twitter, it autoposts on facebook and vice versa
