What I would do to beat Maryland.
-Start with Javi on Vasquez. He did a good job against him the last time we played (much better than anyone else). If he gets around Javi on a drive, somebody step up and take a charge. If Javi gets into foul trouble, try Ferg on him. Oddly enough, I think he matches up well against Vasquez defensively.
-Practice all week different sets to run against UMD's zone defense. We looked like retards trying to do anything against their zone last time. You can't really penetrate into it, so try getting it to Ben in the high post and working from there.
-Guard the fat guy on the perimeter. Yeah, I know ... he's the last guy on earth you expect to make a 3pt shot. But he can and will if you leave him open. Don't double down on Vasquez and leave that guy open.

Hopefully we have Fells back by then.....
I also agree that Fergie would probably match up well against vasquez...Fergie is 6'5". I think Javi and Farnold just don't have the height to stop him, vasquez is tall for a PG 3/10/2009 10:38:15 AM |

Fergie doesn't match up well with anyone that plays in the ACC, much less Vasquez. 3/10/2009 10:40:00 AM |

I guess I stopped paying attention by that point, too pissed at him prancing around celebrating every point he made 3/10/2009 10:48:26 AM |

Vasquez had 23 against mostly fells in the first 35 minutes. He had 6 in the last 5 minutes while Javi was on him, but they were three free throws IIRC and that gay assed open three pointer he took at the end (fuck that motherfucker).
Javi played great defense on him in the box and 1.

javi's the freaking man. i've always defended him. undoubtedly he was playing like crap much of last year and earlier this year, but so was everyone else on our team and he has always appeared to be giving the most effort when he he's out there. kids plays with heart. i loved the javi vs. paulus matchup last year lol.
he did do a good job against vasquez and watching him running his tail off fighting through nonstop screens again against tyrese rice was pretty impressive as well.
it's nice to finally see his stats start matching his effort. though he still does have a long way to go. 3/10/2009 12:35:48 PM |

I would have agreed until I saw him guard McClinton. He's the best offensive player in the ACC IMO, and Ferg held him to 3-15 from the floor.3/11/2009 10:59:32 AM |

Vasquez is constant bulletin board material, and he doesn't mind being the villain in an opponent's gym.

i was feeling pretty good about this game until i saw that interview. i'm not too worried about how javi will fare against him (assuming he guards him), but it just reminded me that most players, especially vasquez, have more heart than almost all of ours. 3/11/2009 3:46:13 PM |

I was as mad as anyone after the Maryland game, but there's nothing wrong with that interview. I actually give Vasquez credit for being lighthearted with that answer -- not taking a shot at Javi, our team, our fans, etc.
With that said, I'm sure I'll hate him again around 7pm tomorrow. 3/11/2009 4:25:25 PM |

Obviously, no one on the coaching staff read my list. There was no Ferg on Vasquez. The zone kicked our ass (again). And the fat guy was raining 3's.
