well there is a slight bug in your logic, but i definitely get what you're saying.

(i.e. terminal velocity - frictional losses to the snow - wind friction.....)

Decreased drag because of the thin atmosphere is a plus.

how do cavemen last 10,000 years relatively well in snow/ice and these guys are down to the bones?

It just depends on how long they were exposed to the elements before being frozen. Also, sometimes the body moves and thaws and refreezes.

It depends on the exposure. George Mallory's body was very well presevered when it was discovered 80 years later.

The death rate for Mount Everest climbers is, 1 death for every 10 successful summits ... If I remember right, about 5% of all people that attempt it die.

The stats improve from year to year as people have a better understanding of what kind of gear is necessary.

^4 Or half of the people that attempt it turn back and aren't "successful".

If you're stupid enough to try to climb a really tall and dangerous mountain for no damn reason, you're the only that knowingly put your life at such a risk. At that point it's not up to one of the other dumb assholes trying to climb the mountain to save you.

^^^ I wasn't clear. 10% deaths to successful summits ratio. 5% deaths to attempts ratio.

really? I would think the stats would get worse because people would learn the wrong techniques from the people who died.

people dont have trouble because they were instantly buried alive. The trouble stems from lack of oxygen and dehydration. Basically the air is so thin there isn't enough oxygen being pumped to your brain and you have all sorts of problems

(i just watched this hour special on climbing Everest yesterday)

So you're saying that half of all attempts are successful?

or maybe the Nepalese government doesn't feel obligated to have a fleet of helicopters on standby to rescue dumb ass foreign tourists from their own stupidity

sadly it seems a New Zealand avionics corporation is designing an unmanned drone for Everest rescues, thus eliminating yet another satisfying source of Darwinistic realization in today's increasingly dull world

I'd love to see an escalator and observation deck (with food court) installed at the summit in my lifetime.

^^Yet another story about someone who died trying to do something that they were completely unprepared for. Had the dumbass brought a map and compass, the first two items on any wilderness excursion packing list, he would have survived.

^ Agreed.

What's the point of going to Alaska to "rough it" and then setting up camp a few miles from the highway?

Or a train. Pike's Peak is 14,000 feet and has a train to the summit. Just make the train twice as long, easy .

Send American miscreants to build it, charge $5,000 per trip up, split with the Nepalese.

EVERYONE WINS!

But still leave the mountain open to climbers. That way I can hang out at the Sbarro and talk shit to all of them as soon as they reach the summit.
