actually the CBC brewery has music. also its not a house party, music doesn't need to be a requisite for a bar. I went there two times before I reviewed this thread and ne'er a time did i notice the lack of music.

^^when i was there on saturday there were these kids who came beside the outside of the bar with an old style boombox playing techno and did some dancing. it was mildly entertaining.

yeah i didnt even notice at all when i went. but i do kind of agree. its a smaller pub atmosphere and having loud music hurts conversation due to volume and tv's could turn it into a completely different atmosphere on big game nights. i kind of like it that it is another 'type' of bar other than sports bar/club. just another option if youre feeling up for that on a particular night. i really enjoyed it and that terrace is awesome. glad its finally open.

went there last night. when i saw that the only one of their beers they had was the porter and their other beers were five dollars a pop, I walked down to moonlight and had the same beer i would have gotten at boylan for a dollar cheaper and had a good pizza dinner.

i guess i'll check them out again in a couple weeks when they might have more of their own beers on tap.

not yet. i'm apprehensive about going out lately since i'm jobless. that's why i was asking though. i'd go try it if it was only going to be around for a while. i'm itching to anyway.

I really enjoyed it!

I'm kind of sad that I missed out on the patio, but a friend and I braved the rain anyways and it was gorgeous. I can't wait to see it during the summer time.

I really enjoyed the no music/no smoking part and thought it was kind of awesome because (I) tend to focus on a tv or music when I'm bored, so I paid more attention to the people I was with/those around me without the other distraction.

and smoking is just I hate going home and smelling like an ashtray after going out somewhere

my only reservation is that because of the terrace it will get so crowded with shitty people during the summer months that i wont be able to stand it. ill still go though, i just like to whine a little every now and then.

i find this place horribly boring. when i went they didnt even have any of their own damn beer and said it would be weeks before they were ready to serve again.

no liquor license and absolutely 0 parking.
I thought the inside layout was terribly designed and the use of space was just sad

from the ugly and boring decor to the lack of anything outside of background noise to not having any of their beer i will probably NEVER go back.

THE ONLY THING they have going for them is the deck and view of the city. thats it.

yeah, i was very optimistic about this place, but I've gone for a beer a few times, but it just hasn't done much for me. Their brew is decent, but I haven't been when it was all available, and I'd say it's on the expensive side for what it is. The porch has a lot of potential... if I went with a larger group of friends it would be a cool place to chill.

^^so you made an assumption based on one visit without giving it another shot? I totally agree with you on parking though, it is complicated if you rather have a parking lot as opposed to park on the many available side streets as you would on glenwood or fayetteville. But I can't agree with much else.

Them being out of beer is reasonable, there is no way to predict how much traffic you'll have when you first open, and at $4 flat each or 12/pitcher its going to go fast. Having no music isn't necessarily a negative, either, but to each their own on that one. I find the decor modern and simple, as opposed to boring and while the use of space is poor the overall layout is actually pretty good. The owner being an architect and designer, i think he may have known a thing or two. I don't find the decor boring, but then again my tastes are a little more refined than ruby tuesday's and the village draft house.

Its clear you've already decided its not the place for you, but, personally, if anyone else has gone there when the beers weren't fully available i think its worth another attempt. The place is rock solid.

There are way too many places to go in Raleigh to keep going back to a place that obviously doesnt have their shit together

For example, if you open a brewery pub yet don't brew enough to operate as a bar you are FAR, FAR from "ROCK SOLID".

i'd agree with your sentiment if they were 3 months in and couldn't perform, but at this point they have their act together and these mishaps aren't unfolding as they once did. if you're a new bar its relatively impossible to estimate the demand. Since that issue has resolved itself I believe its worth it for those who made their first attempt under such conditions to try it again.

word is that they were brewing and not kegging their beer, so whenever they ran out of a beer, it would be about 3 more weeks until they had more.

since they ran out of all their beers, they have doubled the amount of tanks they use so they should be back on track soon. pretty stupid business plan though, if you ask me.

i did end up going the other and was both impressed and not impressed.

things i liked:
1. their beer. they had 3 of their own brews on tap, and i tried them all. the porter is awesome. i enjoyed it a lot. the bitter was also great. the pale ale was pretty average, but definitely drinkable.
2. no music, tvs or smoking inside. if you can't find friends you enjoy conversation with and you need music to fill the dead space in your conversation or a tv to keep you from boredom, this place isn't for you. i, personally, liked it.
3. the seating outside. what a view. really relaxing.

things i didn't like:
1. food was overpriced. i got a burger that barely was bigger than a cookout burger for $9. that was off-putting.
2. no liquor. this isn't really a big deal to me, i was just surprised. if i go to a brewpub, i'm going to be drinking their beer anyway.
3. parking. i had no problem finding a parking spot, but there weren't many people there. i can see how this would be a problem with a weekend crowd though.

overall, i will definitely go again. this place isn't for everyone, though. if you've got friends who can carry on a good conversation and you want a quiet place to relax and enjoy good beer, this place is spot on. if you're looking to get hammered and party it up, maybe this place isn't for you. and don't go there planning on a great burger for your money. the fish and chips were quite tasty though.

This basically sums it up for me.

I will probably go back if friends choose to go there, but no way in hell will I do so on my own volition.

I give it another year, and out of business by year 2.

No music was the final nail in the coffin.... oh, and our dumb cunt of a waitress who, I'm convinced, would smile at her own mother's funeral. I've never seen someone so happy to be a half-ass waitress in my life. (did i mention she went over to hang out with friends and let us go dry about 4 times?).

I don't mind stepping outside for a smoke, in fact I prefer that in the warm weather.

hahaha. lol at this statement; maybe monday - thursday the parking is adequate at best but when i went on a friday i had to ride around for about 10 minutes to find a place to park. Your statement about Fayetteville and GW South is crazy since there are these things called PARKING DECKS.

there are not that many available side streets either unless you want to take a nice little walk through the mini-hood.

Quote :

them being out of beer is piss poor planning and a bad business model in not kegging the beer until at least they could get decent forecasting.

Quote :
"The owner being an architect and designer, i think he may have known a thing or two."

and i think he might have paid for his degree from the internet. really bad use of space on the inside of the place. so he did the interior design too? did he do any research at all on aesthetics? color?
is his target market 50 year olds?

Quote :
"I don't find the decor boring, but then again my tastes are a little more refined than ruby tuesday's and the village draft house."

i hope thats not a smart ass comment b/c i refuse to go to place that has no clue on how to hang art and had rather use fucking THUMB TACKS. so if thats what you go for then you deserve to be laughed at.

Plus, everything is the same color. Clear glass and brass on light wood with light colored paint through out the entire place. there is NOTHING that breaks up the decor at all. it literally almost put me to sleep. BEIGE overload

AMEN!!

the thing about the music is this; I really dont want to hear what the table next to me is talking about. Background music at quiet levels wouldnt hurt that place at all and would actually help it.

the only appealing part of this place is the deck. I would go back to sit on the deck if they actually had some of their beer on tap. it sucks to go to a brewery specifically to try their beer and they are like...come back in 3 weeks.

I want to know how anyone can say their being out of beer is "reasonable", when they admit themselves that it was poor planning because they don't "store off site".

If you want to be a brew pub, then prepare to be a fucking brew pub.

Part of the problem is that the guy isn't a restauranteur by trade and it doesn't really matter whether or not this place succeeds or fails.

I know a lot of bar and restaurant owners/managers, and every single one has commented that the lack of music is strange. As I said before, when there's six people in there and two of them are singles, being forced to listen to the four idiots cackle in the corner instead of a little Talking Heads in the background is not preferable.

about 99% of restaurants will have a few big fuckups when they first open up, it is reasonable to have the fuckups, especially if you admit your mistake, and have since worked to fix them and make sure they don't happen again

maybe no music is part of his building code or something. theres neighborhoods right across the street. so if music was playing, they would probably get complaints about it. even if it's not that loud.

one thing I hate about places like carolina ale house is that you have to yell in order to be heard and its impossible to hear your friends. Makes for absolutely miserable conversations. I don't understand why places crank up the music so loud....

Beer was mediocre at best and they were out of two of their brews
Food was lousy and overpriced - $9 for a hamburger? Really?
Service was terrible.
