This thread is so amusing. I'd have never guessed that a KOF thread would get this much attention.
Quote : | "1985 < 1991
so how exactly am I "wrong either way" ??" |
Street Fighter II, considered the progenitor of all modern fighting games, didn't come out until 1991.
Quote : | "No, if being on the field taught you how to move your legs and arms then you would have a point... " |
And yet, strangely enough, those people who actually continue to play the game - or sport - and learn from it are the ones who improve their talents and become better at it. I'd be willing to believe that that logic would apply to most competitive events.
Quote : | "these games just come down to whoever has nothing else to do in their lives so they just sit and pump quarters in troll a message board over and over and then "beat" someone who has played posted 1/100 of the time, oh shit! you are a badass!" |
Fixed that for ya.
Quote : | "its not about strategy, its about memorizing certain movements... strategy is something that someone who has never played before could possibly come up with to beat someone else, memorization is not strategy" |
So then why do athletes even bother to practice at all? I mean, since you make the generalization that looks like they only need to memorize one move to be good at whatever they are playing and that practice is unnecessary. Reflex, speed, and fine motor control don't even factor in to your argument. Seems to me that somewhere along the line, skill, strategy, and execution have to come together in order to achieve a win, and a big component of this is the 3 things I just listed. Doing the same thing over and over is eventually going to result in someone wising up and taking advantage of your shortcomings. Perhaps you may have a lack of strategic creativity?
Strategy: "a plan, method, or series of maneuvers (or any artifice, ruse, or trick devised to gain an advantage over an adversary or competitor) for obtaining a specific goal or result."
Quote : | "Say you are playing Madden. I like playing coach mode because it comes down to strategy and "football planning" more than just "oh, I dont know shit about football but I can press X-X-RB-RB-O-X faster than you!" Thats why I hate "playing" madden as in controlling the players instead of coach mode because knowing certain combinations or gimmick maneuvers can overcome actual football knowledge because of the limitations of a video game." |
That's real impressive since I just this past weekend watched the 5-year-old son of one of my friends do that same thing and led the Eagles to a 42-7 win over the Panthers, both teams on All Madden AI level. That win is the result of the computer simply being able to play with a preset skill and intelligence level. If the players on any particular real world team haven't learned their moves and haven't put them into practice, then they're going to lose. Same principle applies to fighting games - if you know how to throw a fireball but don't know when to and when not to, then it doesn't do you a whole lot of good. Execution timing is going to get you a long way in almost any competitive example, but if you can't count on the move/play to be executed when you need it, then you're going to be in trouble.
Quote : | "I like backing up all the way, and flipping constantly against the side of the screen and kicking when someone came near me... cant remember the game but it always worked haha." |
Wow. You must have been playing against people even less capable than you.
But really, if you don't like fighting games, then that's great. We'll get along just fine without you. I really dislike playing against people who don't know what they're doing anyway. There's no fun in it.3/17/2009 3:16:44 PM |

You definitely did not do this. You repeated again and again the only skill involved learning the moves by pumping quarters into the machines. And I admitted in my first response to your question the genre hadn't "advanced much". So much for "blindly defending them".3/17/2009 3:23:39 PM |

^^ no, thats not the same thing as "why do athletes even bother to practice at all
and see this:
Quote : | "I guess my point is this:
a good football video game should be able to be played (and played well) by someone who has never touched a controller before but knows football. Vince Lombardi should be able to play a good football video game because he has superior football knowledge.
It's knowledge of the subject that is important, not a knowledge of weird combinations of joystick movements and buttons. The interface itself should be really transparent, really easy, but what you DO with that is the skill part. I feel that 95% of fighting games is just being the one that knows more combination of buttons than the next guy." |
Fighting games isnt about one person being more strategic than someone else... its about someone knowing the game mechanics better than someone else... in my mind, a GOOD fighting game would be one that some black belt in martial arts could step into completely cold (having NEVER played the game) and beat some little 8 year old kid who just happens to be good at "combos" but that doesnt happen. Does the black belt know more fighting strategy? of COURSE he does, but that doesnt matter, he doesnt know the ridiculous combinations that you only get from pumping in quarters over and over so the little kid will beat his ass.
Quote : | "Street Fighter II, considered the progenitor of all modern fighting games, didn't come out until 1991." |
no one mentioned the "progenitor"... and even if they hav, I said 1991, which still means I would be correct.
Here, let me fix it for you:
Quote : | "these games just come down to whoever has nothing else to do in their lives so they just sit and write a pathetic blog over and over that no one cares about and then "beat" someone who isn't sad, oh shit! you are a badass!"" |
Hows that "white knight" shit doing for you? your quest complete?
^ I like how you ignored the FIRST thing I said...

but what happens when 2 people have pumped equal number of quarters? is it just about luck at that point?
you are 100% correct that the skill of knowing moves does factor in, but at some point when GOOD players who ALREADY KNOW those crazy combos step into the ring, strategy begins. certainly not everyone can come in because of the learning curve, but in your example, a fighting exerpert COULD say "ah i would have had to sweep at that point in order to counter," even if he was unable to actually do so in the game.
that said, you are somewhat missing a point that it is a game and does not have a real life equivalent. no one can throw fireballs in real life so a blackbelt isnt going to do much in strategizing against them. that is arguably what makes the games fun. they are over the top and yet still require strategy (though better ones will have less of a learning curve regarding the moves).

^ now see... an actual constructive counter argument... my point is that it will very rarely come down to both people knowing an equal number of moves AND perfectly executing the moves which would then make it about who has better strategy. You almost ALWAYS have one player who knows more.
as for your second point, I only really like ultra realistic games. 3/17/2009 4:19:19 PM |

This is like the very best part of fighting games - the endgame. When one person has another so completely turned around and beaten at every turn that it's all about being entertained watching them get frustrated and desperate.
Quote : | "my point is that it will very rarely come down to both people knowing an equal number of moves AND perfectly executing the moves which would then make it about who has better strategy." |
Those are called tournaments. They happen all the time.
Quote : | "and even if they hav, I said 1991, which still means I would be correct." |
And so which fighting games were you playing before then? I doubt you even know. There wasn't really even anything on the map before SFII.
Quote : | "but what happens when 2 people have pumped equal number of quarters? is it just about luck at that point? " |
Excellent point. And can't this also be said about any real world examples? Like two fighters who have trained in the same style for the same amount of time? Or perhaps two teams who have had the same number of practices? Doesn't it come down to skill and strategy at that point? I'd probably say so.

Yes, I played sports, had friends that didn't play sports, didn't get beaten up. Lots of people prefer to pay attention to other things in life that don't involve scoring more points on a playing field. I know professional screenwriters, medical school students, etc. etc. etc. that don't pay attention to sports. People that were not "beaten up by jocks". This is a FACT. How fucking difficult is this for you to grasp?
I skimmed the thread, and a particularly dumb post jumped out at me. Stop getting all hung up on stupid irrelevant shit, like my thread reading habits.
The fact that you even tried to make this "point" in a thread about a fighting video game is just dumb.

Hahaha. I didn't mean to make the homo thing my main point, or a point at all really. I was trying to say some people could just find sports silly/trivial compared to other things in their lives, their careers for instance. And rather than use sports for their entertainment, many choose other things.
I don't care what you bet. I played sports. I still like sports. I now photograph sports and attend sporting events regularly. I'm not demeaning sports, I'm arguing against a retarded statement and presenting another viewpoint for your incredibly closed mind. You care about sports a lot, that's fine. I do too. once again, didnt say they couldnt prefer other things... I just said that for someone to not like ANY sport, ANY AT ALL, then they are consciously making themselves hate all of them just to do it.
