Post-match press conference. Skip ahead to 4:15 ish for the questions about the end. Caldwell gives a pretty rational answer for all that.

that was cool and all, but i think the odds of tearing an acl are about as good as the odds of that move working.

"Darrion Caldwell, North Carolina St.: Caldwell pulled out one of the biggest upsets in recent years with his win over undefeated and highly favored Brent Metcalf of Iowa. He tends to get his opponents on their back quickly and ability to get fast takedowns would be great for MMA. He is a junior this year, so we won't see him a cage right away, but keep an eye out for him. "

BTW i have heard Caldwell is an awful football player and really slow for his size so i am pretty sure football is not an option. Needs to stick with wrestling and go from there. (MMA would be sick)

Caldwell was an All-state cornerback his senior year.

Gopack Q&A posted. He talks about football and whatnot. It kinda sounds like he might not try out for football and spend his redshirt year wrestling in open meets and stuff. maybe.

i was actually on sherdog mma forums and there was a huge thread dedicated to caldwell and how good he could do at MMA, as in of all the competitors his athleticism stood out

but i dono, not everyone likes being punched in the head and choked, he could make a career out of wrestling and getting endorsements for sure

its just alot less exposure than other alternatives

While Caldwell wrestled a fantastic match his stunt at the end was just complete fucking bush league. I was embarrassed to see an NC State athlete do that...could he not have waited to do his stunt until after he shook the mans hand? Wrestling more than other sports there is always a degree of respect for your opponent because both of you understood the amount of hard work and effort it takes to reach the highest competitive level.

Upset or not it was sorely disappointing.

he took off running with like 2 seconds left, which could have easily been shot evasion (in theory) he wasnt gonna get a stalling call with 2 secs left

he didnt flip until well after the buzzer sounded

Does it make that much difference if you celebrate before or after you shake hands?

Go to 4:24 to hear Caldwell talk about it.

I'm glad the video is embedded because every State fan really needs to watch it.

This match was so epic and will go down as one of the most historic moments in State athletics and yet no one I know on campus gives a fuck or doesn't understand the magnitude of what Caldwell accomplished.

I'm definitely one to blame as I'd only ever seen replays of his previous matches before the the tournament started but I had still been following his career and I understood how big of a deal it would be for him to beat Metcalf again, let alone completely embarrass him.

You know how we beat undefeated UCLA by 3 pts in 1974? This was the equivalent of us taking that UCLA team to the woodshed in a 30+ pt beatdown. Maybe that is a slight stretch but most believed Metcalf was going to be a back to back national champion and one of the alltime greats and Caldwell had him entirely dismantled by the end of the first period.

I just hope more State fans watch the match and get to appreciate it for what it is.

Haha. I only mentioned it because they lost a few Pac 10 games that year as well. We did end their title run though.

Man, Iowa fans are bitter and apparently functionally illiterate. They act like Metcalf is the next Dan Gable or something.
