Don't really see a problem, here. If a program is way over budget, it needs to be cut. It's obviously being mismanaged and we don't need to bailout failing programs. Military acquisition is a fucking joke -- extremely wasteful and plagued by dunderheads. 4/8/2009 12:45:31 AM |

Those aren't like comparisons.
Most logical people can see that our current level of military spending is unsustainable just as they can see that our current level of deficits spent on social programs are also unsustainable.
We're not going to keep bailing companies out indefinitely just as we shouldn't keep building cold war toys that are used only in air shows and Jerry Bruckheimer movies. 4/8/2009 4:45:54 PM |

They differ in one other way too. The government is explicitly authorized by the Constitution to spend on the military and national defense, but not to spend on bailing private companies and investors out.
That being said, it's always been my understanding that though incredible on paper and when they're in the air, the F-22 program has always been over budget and underwhelming for practical purposes. 4/8/2009 7:30:29 PM |

The U.S. State Department's office of protocol, in a statement attributed to acting chief of protocol Gladys Blouda, confirmed the type of greeting between heads of state depends on the customs of the countries, but a handshake is the most common form of greeting.
The online Travel Etiquette website for Saudi Arabia said handshakes are common greetings between members of the same sex. " |

After we've fucked our good standing with the world and played arrogant imperialist for the past few decades, I think something like that could go a long way to repairing relations with the rest of the world. You're not going to read that on a conservative website though.
^ easy setup? That was the worst fail of a reply that I think I've ever read on this website. You're a doctor? wtf?

The f-22 project, if cut now, would leave the U.S. with the astonishingly weak fleet of 187 f-22's. Would someone care to explain to me why 187 of these fighters is not enough? 4/8/2009 10:20:49 PM |

This site reports that the defense budget in being increased an extra 20 billion dollars and that F-35 production is gonna be boosted to make up for the decline of the F-22. If true, then I wager that in the next coming years we will see more of these fighters in the hands of our counterparts. I'm pointing to Mexico and Japan. We all know that the Cartel and North Korea situations are getting pretty heated. This is called posturing and its nothing new. 4/9/2009 3:16:39 AM |

It's a show of respect you dipshit. I get all the arguments about "we're America god damnit, we don't bow to anyone"... but if you're going to argue about the bow, you should at least ask why the King didn't bow himself...maybe he was respecting the American customs of offering the handshake, effectively showing reverence to our culture and customs. I see it as a great way to show the rest of the world that we are in fact humble and realize we have a black eye at the moment from what we've been up to the past decade. I think what others are trying to say and failing at saying is this:
Bowing is specifically a sign of respect in Asian countries. Bowing is not specifically a sign of respect in ME countries.
While in the long run it doesn't matter whatsoever, it definitely can be considered a faux pas to not know the proper ways of greeting dignitaries from different countries, just as if he had bowed to the Canadian PM or something along those lines. 4/9/2009 10:03:33 AM |

yeah, that's what I thought the opposition would be to the bow, but apparently Muslims wouldn't bow to each other, so the complaint isn't that he's a Muslim, it's that he's ignorant of Muslim customs.
So.... that kind of undermines the whole "secret muslim" conspiracy, doesn't it?4/9/2009 3:44:04 PM |
