^^ Some would say the prospect of government recognized gay marriage was never possible. Why should I adopt what you consider to be a pragmatic stance when I find the idea of government involvement in personal affairs to be unnecessary?

Huh? You're saying that marriages shouldn't be defined or denied by the government, but you're also saying that marriage shouldn't be between individuals of the same sex? I mean, you could be saying that -- the two issues are different.... I just wanted clarification. If the government got out of the business of marriage, what would stop same sex marriage from occurring?

I'm not sure that the government will be in the business of marriage forever -- forever is a very long time.

I agree with you totally. But I am a realist, and the government will be in the business of marriage well after I am dead and gone.

The "Nay" is based on the assumption that the OP was talking about government recognition of same-sex marriages. I'm opposed to it, in that, I don't think they should be in the business at all. I could care less if gay people want to get married, I could care less that straight people want to get married. I simply don't think it is the government's business.

Right now, I'm being effectively financially punished by the Federal government for 1) being single, 2) having no children, 3) renting instead of owning. The argument of gay marriage proponents is that same sex couples should have the same rights under the law. I agree. I just disagree that they (or anyone else) should financially benefit in the form of tax breaks or preferential treatment.

If two people are concerned about visitation rights, life or death decisions in a hospital situation, inheritance of property, custody of children, etc, there is no reason that they cannot get a legal contract that would cover all of that. This would allow single adults who chose to live together in a platonic relationship to establish the same protections for one another.

Oh, I see. I agree.

Again, I agree -- although I wouldn't limit it to two people.

I look forward to a time when the government doesn't dictate what society should do, especially in regard to family and marriage. If people want to form tribes or communes other social structures instead of being compelled by law to form traditional "nuclear families", then they should be completely free to do so.

The church, where marriage started in the first place.

JCASHFAN makes a very good argument.

and I feel the same should go for health insurance. If I share a house with someone, share all the bills, share all the responsibility, then they should also be able to share my health insurance.

No... they can only stop marriages from occurring in their church -- Other churches could still offer same sex marriage.
Of course, you don't even really need a church to get married, just a contract and a notary, right?

^^^
And 100% private health insurance providers could and should offer that choice...
Currently however, the government and our beloved corporate oligarchs don't want us to have that option.
